Why is this thread still in the main forum? It should have been moved to NPR a long time ago. Everyone has the right to their own opinion, just share it off the main page.
March of Dimes....10% hits the street
UNICEF....less than 5%
Goodwill....0% goes to the needy
American Red Cross and United Way....big salaries at the top
SALVATION ARMY....93% goes to those who need it
i love you, Honey - but on this we're gonna have to disagree. we did their books. charities were 30% of our client-base.
creative accounting. that's what the Big 6 (now Big 3), are paid $$$$$$ (6-figures) for.
don't even get me started on churches!
Well, I'm ignorant as to the creative accounting. But I think broad-brush condemnation of the Red Cross is misplaced. I know they have had quite a few controversies and instances of fraud and theft. But they have tens of thousands of employees and hundreds of thousands of volunteers, so manifestations of human greed and corruption will pop up from time to time. Overall, I believe they have done enormous good with their disaster relief in this country and elsewhere.

Question:
Is there a conflict between an attest, more likely than not fairly stated financial statements opinion, and auditor reclass entries, to more favorably represent that activity?
And if such a conflict exists, in aiding compliance with any tax exempt status requirements...is that conflict patently resolved in favor of the client? To not do so, is to lose the client to another firm that has no ethical problem in creatively reflecting transactions?(or is the auditor signing off on the client's creativity?...or both?)
Or are problem issues glossed over, not rising to the level of reportable significant divergent accounting practices, and therefore not includeable in the issued audited financial report?
These questions are somewhat hypothetical....depends on who's buying lunch...and rounds of golf, and club memberships and.....certified opinions....ah...the way of the world:wink:
ps:How typical is a lateral move by the senior auditor to the client charity controllership/senior staff?
Relevance to Fatboy....directly ...none....
In my neck of the woods we have a Hospice Group with about (5) thrift stores
scattered within a 30 mile radius. These folks have a large complex where
they care for dying cancer patients at very low or no cost. Most of their staff
at the stores are Volunteers. We donate exclusively to them and S.A.
Our local Animal Outreach (cat rescue) is mainly volunteers also.
They will receive an endowment when I pass from this life.

Nice of you to defend the Red Cross..With their massive volunteer network, they have done some good at times.. But I can't believe ANYONE thinks 91% of their donations, actually get to the needy.. It is probably the most corrupt charity on earth. They recieve billions in donations, and volunteer services, with very little (if any) accountability... They are just like Vegas, in its prime mob days...They get 'First Count' !![]()
You need to dig a little deeper, rather than just google the figures that THEY provide to Wikipedia !

Seems a mite bit early to me.

... <20% goes directly to aid, generally speaking.
