Hidden stuff in The Color of Money..

I just watched it again, and noticed two cool things:

1. At one point in the movie, they are exiting a pool hall, and there is a church behind them. What is the name of the church? St. Paul De Vincent. Perhaps this shot was included as an inside joke on Newman's first name, and the character Vincent's name?

2. In the end, when Fast Eddie is looking deep into the two ball contemplating how Vincent dumped their match, he is looking at his "reflection" in the ball. The reflection is reversed. I believe the reflection is bridging with his left hand, while Eddie is bridging with his right.

Anyone else find any neat stuff like this in either The Hustler or TCOM?

I noticed the final shot when I watched it again a few weeks ago but didn't pick up on the church.

If you go to IMDB.com & look up the movie you'll find plenty of stuff to look for.

Though the Tom Cruise character's name is actually Vincent Lauria, it appears as V. Loria on one of the tournament charts shown, surely a reference to V. Loria & Sons, a well-known New York billiard supplies outfit that has been around for decades. In fact, V. Loria & Sons set up my father's Brunswick Gold Crown 1 in February of 1969.

When Vincent says this game is for bangers, he makes the 9-ball then in the next shot, he shoots the 8-ball.
Eddie was nice not to call a foul on Vinnie though.

contrary to what has been said in the past no scenes of Color of Money were filmed at Chris's on Milwaukee av.in Chicago..only some Hustler scenes were filmed there..

As far as there not being any such thing as The Akron Open,I know better from personal experience. Watching that tournament in 1985,won coincidentally by Mike Sigel,is what really sparked my interest in the game period,even before the movie came out. What was disappointing about that tournament was that was the place I found out that my Dad wasn't the best player in the world. I thought he was, because I had seen him run 3 racks on a bar table,or break and run out one-handed. I remember waiting for my dad to play his match,and seeing Mike walk in. Starcher's back in those days had a pretty strong lineup of daily/nightly players,and when I noticed them buzzing about Mike's presence,I just knew somehow I had to see what the commotion was about. I watched every match of his for the whole tournament,and only remember him flat missing twice in 6 races to 11. Tommy D.

Contrary to what the above post said, no scenes from The Hustler were ever filmed at Chris's. Chris's wasn't even around when The Hustler was filmed.
Yes some scenes from TCOM were filmed at Chris's.

If you watch closely in the scene with Eddie and Amos, you can see the edits where Forrest Whitaker doesnt make any of the "trick" shots while hustling Eddie. There is one where you can clearly see it is a caucasian bridge hand..... Im guessing Sigel. But somewhere I remember hearing something about Bugs Rucker doing some of the shots..... maybe Grady can comment on that.

If memory serrves, the late Tony Ellin was also a multiple time winner of the Akron Open.

I remember Tony winning once & Earl winning several times. It was something to see Segal and Varner coming in together and warming up. It was funny, they would put plywood on the the tables on the right side of the room with folding chairs for bleachers. I miss those tournies. Was it called the Akron Open or the Ohio State Open? sorry off topic.

If you run the movie backwards, you will see an eerie image of Mephistopheles shooting pool. The evil tempter misses an easy nine ball in the corner pocket becomes enraged ( he didn't keep his head down). The Lord of darkness winds up addressing the viewer with a proposition. For your soul, you will never miss another shot.

Bugs was auditioned to do the part that Forest Whitaker wound up with. Bugs was absolutely helpless when it came to acting. They finally gave up on him totally, and Whitaker got the part. I am almost sure he (Bugs) didnt even get to shoot any shots he was that camera shy.

I saw his instructional video in which he was quite comical. at one point he went to shoot a ball and said some thing like "this shot is tougher than 7 mother in laws, including my own" funny stuff

Mag: you are so right.i did get that turned around.whenever i am in illinois i try to get up there to play some.their business cards say that both films were filmed there but that is false.you were right ..thanks for bringing that to our attention...Merry Christmas..
