Hoppe ring etiquette pt. 2: What size is "right"?

I've noticed that a lot of cuemakers have their own interpretation of what is the "right" size for a hoppe ring and buttcap... I've seen short, tall, skinny, fat, loose, wide, huge, small, and "WTF?!?" several times - especially on AZ....

Now I know that some of you may be saying to yourself, "but wait - it's my cue and I'll make it how I please!" Now while this may be your cue until it's sold, remember one thing.... it will be your cue forever. You are putting your name on it and it is something that the quality of your work will be judged upon by anyone that sees it potentially longer than you will be around.

So with that being said, I wanted to give you a few points on what is acceptable and what is not acceptable for a hoppe ring. We've covered logo/signage on hoppe rings in another thread, so let's stick to measurements on this one.

First of all, this is NOT a hoppe ring. I've seen people describe these as such for quite some time now and honestly, I cried. I did. If this were a hoppe, then I suppose that Southwest cues makes hoppes for most everything....

After giving a pictoral above, I guess it may help to give what I think are great measurements. The ring should vary between .200 and .300 - while .200 is on the low side, you may be willing to stretch this up to .350, but anything beyond that is really starting to push the limits.

As far as the buttcap is concerned, PLEASE keep this NO GREATER THAN 1.-1.4x the size of the hoppe ring! This is where I see a LOT of issues. People will get the size wrong and damn near put it halfway up the buttsleeve! Let's please keep it low....

Just to clarify....

the scruggs is prob. .250 and .500

how about inlays in hoppes.
That Scruggs is probably every bit of .250 and .750 - there is no way in hell it's under .700...

as for inlays? I was skeptical until I was convinced it would look good. I'm beyond pleased with how it turned out....

I'm sorry, but I see some really big D/E rings, but no hoppe rings...

Hi Jim. Sometimes two different people think of the same thing. I have started a cue where I am going to use a double hoppe ring. This pic is the first I have seen of one, but I had no fanciful thoughts when I designed it in my head that the idea was truly original.

Maybe you were referring to someone you knew personally, and the copy was obvious.

I couldn't agree more with your first thread and this one as well. Thank you for saying what needed to be brought out.
Rep to ya.

For a classic look I like .250 ivory and .375 black phenolic. A more modern look is .225 ivory and .325 black phenolic. IMO, the size of the buttsleeve is a factor in the overall asthetic as well.

Hey Roscoe, I have a question. Assuming you have in your hands a cue with an overly wide 'hoppe' ring, would you use a Sharpie to narrow it prior to handing it on ?

Only if your name is Eddie Wheat.... Things like this should be discussed prior to build.

I'll take that as a "sure, I would sharpie up a ring if I thought it was fugly".

I wouldn't even think about it. Take it quite the opposite.

I don't understand .... how could you use a sharpie to make the ring wider

PS ;) I'll stop now Roscoe ... keep warm my friend

WAY too big for a Hoppe ring, huh?
