Hoppe ring etiquette pt. 2: What size is "right"?

Eh - to each their own.... I only own one hoppe cue that has a bumper and it hasn't been used in a while. My daily player is the one in my avatar and the pool hall I go to has tile floors.

I'm consciously careful about what I'm doing, but at the end of the day, the cue gets played.

I'll probably never order a hoppe cue with a bumper again...

Cest la vie....

no bumpers are the real deal, period as are the correct size ring as you perfectly described in your first post. If the glove dont fit you must aquite, if the ring is wrong its a ring not a hopie ring-its that simple!!!! Ross is 100000% right.

To really stir the pot, I gave this alot of thought since my last post, I dont post pics of my cues here, I did in the beginning so people would know I was real, but 65% of my cues I will never post. Most have been seen at one time or another, long before I ownes them

But I have one that is perhaps the BEST Hoppe cue ever, period. It is the crown jewel of all of them, I'm going to take some pics of it and have Ray post them for me since i'm just too lame to remember how. This will put this discussion to an end. i hope:grin:

Hoppe

This would appear to be on the skinny side of most peoples taste. I still like it.

Not skinny at all for me. Looks good. Might look better with slightly thinner black phenolic. The trend, IMO, is toward thinner Hoppe/ phenolic rings. Just like the trend is toward smaller and more detailed inlays.

More fuel for the fire. This was recently posted in the For Sale section. I'm just showing an example of what's out there.

A lot of great Hoppe info. Maybe it is time to do a thread on Barbells. You know, like the bar should be connected to the circles, the bar should be in the center of the circles,..ect. Oh yeah, East-West barbell's are out for me, North-South only.

These replies never fail to get ugly and stray from the original purpose. As I understand the question,it is "Does and should the term Hoppe style refer to a certain style cue and should that style conform to certain historical measurements?'

The question is not"Can any given person order or make a cue of his own to be something like an original hoppe style with his own creative additions?"It is should that cue be called Hoppe style?

The question as I understand it " Is it correct to call a cue Hoppe Style unless it conforms more or less to the original style, design and specifications of the original hoppe cues."

Again the question is not"Is a cue maker an unethical individual for claiming to sell a Hoppe style cue, when in point of fact,he has strayed from the original specs to a greater or lesser degree?"

I ordered a Hoppe style from one of the best cuemakers in the nation,Scruggs, and my good frieng Mike Cochran, one of the most conscientious cuemakers you could find, put an extra 1 inch piece of ivory under the ring as a special bonus for me.I looked forward to the cue for months, but when I got the cue I was disappointed because I wanted the single traditional ring,I never hit the cue, never liked the cue, sold it for $750 more than I paid, and ordered another one with the traditional design. No one was at fault, the term Hoppe style meant one thing to me ,another to him.

Not everyone is so particular as me,but I believe that the purpose of this thread sought to address this situation. "Is a Hoppe style cue something exactly like the traditionanal ones or just a generic term for a cue with a single ring of various sizes?

Here's a little bit better look at it. I love this cue!

Take a close look at this photo, a very high resolution camera captures the absolute flawless work in this cue. The Ebony is the blackest of black. Where the wrap meets the butt sleeve is as smooth as any I have seen at this magnification, a testament to the highest quality work found in this cue. But the most impressive thing to me is the deep, mirror like liquid glass finish that no one else can beat, look again and you will have to agree. These Thoroughbred cues are worth twice the price because of the exquisite craftsmanship, consider yourself privileged if you are lucky enough to get one. The one in this thread is a steal:

If it looks a lot like this I suppose it's a Hoppe ring. Several of the pics in this thread are great cues...But certainly not hoppe style rings.
