How Do You Protect A Trailer At Events?

After reading about the latest theft of a cue repairmans trailer from a hotel parking lot I figured I would start this to see if I could get some good ideas on how to secure a trailer at an event.

This has happened to more than one member of our industry and it is a major financial and perhaps business ending hit. What is the best way to protect a trailer in a hotel lot?

Lo-Jack is a great idea but it still only works after someone has jacked your gear and has time to empty the trailer (though I am guessing they are stealing the trailer as much as anything that may be inside it). I would think you could rig alarms and if you were really devious maybe a stun gun. Insurance obviously is a must, but once again only of use after the fact.

What are the best ways to prevent the theft?

One letter, one number..................C-4

Back in the day when I was involved with a few politcal leaderships.
We hired people to sit and watch trucks and vans in the parking lot full of our equipment.

Some folks used to volunteer to sit there all night once they knew the job was needed.
But we hired union or ex police types.

One of our largest competitors hired an older biker group.
LOL.

None of their stuff was ever messed with.

As satisfying as knowing the thief was turned into a pink mist would be........there is still the issue of a blown up trailer. But I like where your head is at.

Dammit, I always forget about that. I can still boobytrap the shit out of it for you. Something less lethal. We'll talk at the Open.

But it smells like poo in there!

Insure it to the point where you almost wish someone would take it.
That will keep it safe, and you'll sleep better.

A new paradigm. Something to be said for that, however it still does you no good if say you are on your way to Vegas for a two week event and your gear gets jacked.

I am looking for ways to prevent a theft. The insurance is a natural but still will not prevent you from losing out on a scheduled event.

Justin, you can go to a Walmart and pick up a portable motion sensor alarm,it can be mounted to the trailer where it attaches to the truck,if the trailer is moved or someone goes near the sensor it will trigger and lets off a loud alarm,it comes with keychain remote if I remember correctly. The only downside is an animal or perhaps weather could trigger the alarm as it is pretty sensitive but its the best idea I can think of. :)

I GOT IT!!!!! Before you check into your motel while you are on the road, drop the trailer off at a Dunkin Donuts parking lot! Guaranteed supervision all night.

You could also set up a live stream of the trailer and someone on here is always online at any given time and we could watch it,lol. :p
Another idea is putting LO-JACK stickers or a tracking device sticker, its like those fake cameras that deter thieves or an alarm sign on it might do also.

Thats why they pay you the big bucks my man. Thinking outside of the box. Genius.

Maybe if you just smeared cows blood around a bullet hole by the hitch and put one of those gunshow bumperstickers under it "USMC Sniper: You can run but you will only die tired"

Psychological warfare.

A couple of guys at work have high end motorcycles that they bought alarms for and these have the same sensitivity as a car alarm. Nice part is that the remotes will advise you when the alarm is activated cause someone is fooling with the trailer, so if you're in your hotel room and someone is messing with the trailer, the remote goes off and tells you . I've heard it in action and guarantee you will not sleep through the sound of the remote. I believe they also have the option of making the alarm silent at the trailer.
Another option is to put a small GPS locator inside the trailer for tracking purposes so if it's stolen, you can find it easily enough

I don't know for sure, but I think it takes a pretty dedicated thief and some time and equipment to steel a trailer that has a good coupler lock or is locked onto the tow vehicle. I am being naive here? Has anyone had one of these locks defeated by a thief?

The biker idea is good too. I'm always nervous parking my boat at hotels, but one time there was a motorcycle "club" staying in a block of rooms at the same hotel. There were nice people, but pretty rough looking. There was a nice deep parking space right next to "their area" and I asked them if they'd mind if I put the boat there. They said "no problem". It was probably safer there among the Harley's than at home!

For our band's trailer, the outside is completely blank so the potential thief won't have any idea if there's something worth stealing inside. For all he knows the thing could be full of folding chairs. It's hard to fence those. Of course we lose some free advertizing as we drive to/from gigs, but it's just not worth the risk of losing our gear.

Hey there's an idea! Put this sign on the trailer:

"JOE'S TOILET PAPER RECYCLING"

How about those wheel locks that you see on cars that are abandoned or for other reasons. I think they are put on by the police.

They are those big plates that go around the tire and prevent the wheel from spinning. If you had one of those, the thief would see it and look elsewhere. Maybe needed on both sides to make sure he saw it.

How easy would it be to take the wheels off and leave it on blocks for the week?

How about flattening the tires and keeping a small air compressor in your vehicle?

If your major concern is the trailer being stolen, rather than being broke into, I would suggest taking off the wheels and storing them inside the trailer.

Steve
I see I typed too slow.
