Hi,
I tried using the search function with no success.

Anyway, If let say your 10 yr wait is done and your order is up this year, how much would a typical sw cue with points with veneers cost? I am just curious how much it cost these days when purchased directly from southwest. Thanks for the info.:thumbup::thumbup:

the sx cost is around $2000
but they are to people who ordered long ago

therefore they sell at $3000 plus the day you get it
some upwards of $5000
and the only people complaining are the ones who didn't buy

no cue has a better resale
they are arguably the best playing cues ever

some older ones command a premium
but the cue quality is exactly the same or better brand new

when Jerry died ,he was mainly doing the wraps and finishes
the same people who made them then
are making them now

best wishes finding one

Dean,
Thanks for the info. I placed my order around 2003 and, hopefully, will be getting a call next year. :D

2000-3000 great playing cues with monster resale value due to the "wait" of a new one. Great marketing strategy that benefits current southwest owners immensly. Again, no doubt great players perhaps even better investments.

The are overvalued in my opinion and it's only my opinion. People love them but I get myself on the list every year since 2005.

I put my family member's name and some of my friend's name. I have about 5-10 spots every year since.

I am hoping when I do get those phone calls, I will be flipping them because to me they are money.

I would never want to shoot with one and neither do the owner's of these cues. Rarely played with due to value.

I own a couple of fancy ones that were made by Jerry Franklin. I have owned a couple of six point plain cues and never really liked how they play. I think with these cues it is either a love or hate relationship.

As far as their resale value being the best that is definitely not the case. You will make a lot more money on a Searing or a Barry Szamboti.

I also disagree with the poster who said no one plays with them, I see quite a few people playing with Southwest cues.

southwest

I think there are many errors in this thread. The price of there 6 point cues vary from 1700 starting 6 pointer(with no ebony/tulipwood) 200 extra charge to use either of these woods in just nose butt and points if u wanted ebony on ebony 400 extra. rings above and below wrap 250 extra jp 250 extra wrapless 300 extra. So these cues can hit 3000 price brand new if you wanted some extras

Laurie has a price list she sends out. You should e-mail her. She is a great gal to talk to. BUt depending on your order it could be 1700 or 3500 or more...

deanoc, why did you post first -- I may have to kill ya' now!

Here's what I was gonna post before you pulled the rug from under me:

---And then I have a serious question for you afterwards---

Excuse me—

But just exactly where are you coming from asking such a mundane and piddley question such as this to members of such a privileged fraternity as Southwest owners belong to? Just who do you think Southwest owners are? Our farts smell like toasted almonds, you know. Do you, my friend, think you are even worthy of wiping the brow of a Southwest owner sweating a nine ball?

How dare you lower the ownership of a Southwest cue to such a lowly common denominator such as a monetary value!

Should any member of the glorious Southwest fraternity dare to reveal the answer to this question, I’m afraid that individual would henceforth be banned from the rarified spiritual collusion to which all Southwest owners’ have sworn eternal obeisance.

Curses on you and all your progeny!!!

Anyway, deanoc, I just spent 45 minutes Googling and reading about Southwest cues on other billiard sites and it seems to me that the "otherworldly" hitting quality of Southwest cues is far more highly regarded on AZ than on other sites--including by many owners of Southwest cues on the other sites who love the cues but also feel they are in some cases they are extremely overvalued regarding their hitting quality as compared to other high end cues. Disclosure: I don't own nor I will probably ever even hit with a Southwest.

Do you feel the AZ faithful overvalue the quality of the Southwest hit? There are other high end cues that are also universally recognized by AZ'ers as having superior hitting characteristics, but often don't have the mystique of Southwest. I'm not asking about the cash or investment value here--that's a result of the marketplace and not a result of any individual opinion or perception.

Go to the pacific rim, South Wests are more highly regarded than Bushkas and Szambotis in most places.

I hear that there is a statue of Jerry Franklin shaking hands with the Ma Ying-jeou. (thats just a joke :) )

They have been consistantly a great cue that is obtainable. They make 100-150 a year just by the numbering system they use. You also have to factor in the repairs they do. With so many cues out, they do a lot of refinishes, rewraps, and shafts. The repair time can be 6-8 months, so be prepared to sit for a while. Unlike some cuemakers where they don't take any orders, SW has always produced cues.

The hit is fine. They are a solid hitting cue and there isn't a lot that can go wrong. There is NO metal ring work, no weight bolt, its a different building philosophy from a traditional 4 point. They have earned their place amongst the cuemaker elite.

I have had a lot of them, and they nevert sit long. I had a few that were hard to sell, because they felt special when I tested them ( I didn't want to sell them).

About 400% more than a good cue.

in response to the question

i think southwest cues play the best of all the cues

consistently the best

some people prefer something different
some cues are popular here and there
but the south west cue is legendary for quality and hit all over the world

the new ones are the same as the old ones

Laurie Franklin,Mickey and Al were with Jerry from the early days
and didn't miss a beat in keeping the quality up when Jerry passed away

Laurie has always been the one to select wood and choose the shaftwood

I have been with Jerry when Laurie made the selection,he said
"no one knows wood like Laurie'

there are many fine cuemakers, but only one South west

When I owned the poolroom I had, I was fortunate to be able to play with many cues. I also feel Southwest cues were great cues.

Now, every once in a while I'll buy a cheapo cue and toy with the shaft taper and tip.

I bought this one recently in one of their auctions for 32 dollars plus 14 dollars shipping.

LMAO, this freakin thing feels great too! :speechless::killingme:

For some the magic is in front of the cue tip, for others the magic is behind the cue tip.

If you are in Calgary, you have available to you, Bernie Mikkelson.
He is definitely up there with the best.

I suggest that you get in touch and see what he is doing. You won't be disappointed.

Are those rings decals? I bought one from him too (http://www.ebay.com/itm/ROSEWOOD-Bu...5391?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item27ba68809) with two shafts that was advertised as a "southwest joint cue" It wasn't too bad of a hit either and pretty good quality. Much better than I expected. I sent it to my wife's cousin in Australia as a gift after smoothing the shafts and he and his filipino buddies thinks he has a southwest. It would have been cheaper to buy another one and have him ship it to australia directly from China but then they would know the truth. All I told him is I was sending a cue for him.
