Hello all big $$ pool sharks, could you offer good advise on how much practice is a must before high $$ match, if you do not live in the pool hall and have regular job, an hour, 1/2 hour, 10 min, nothing. What is a good sign that you are really feel ready, like shooting long shots, running 5, 6 balls .. or is it by experience you just practice cretin time before a match
I wish some one do a vote for it

Thanks to all

Hmmmm.... this is kind of an open ended question as there really is no answer. It varies greatly amongst people and their abilities to cope with the pressures of gambling, etc.

Do it when you feel you are ready.

I will play you right now for 4 figures. Honestly if you are asking these questions then you should have no business playing for any large sum of money. Basically if you cant beat the guy your playing even and you know this, dont play him for anything. I should listen to my own advice but i am abit of a gambler. Now getting ball weight in my opinion really only helps people who can play well against the ghost.

Wybrook, please handle the light work for us?;)

I think it's more about how much you have played in the days/weeks leading up to the match. Obviously if you are matching up on a table that is unfamiliar to you, you can benefit greatly from hitting balls on it for a half hour or so before the match, but I think your overall comfort level will be more dependent on how much you have played (especially for $) in the days before the match. You will have cases where you get off to a slow start in a money match, and that's just how it is sometimes, but if you have been playing well in the days before the match you will be able to draw more confidence from that than you will draw from a good 2 hour practice session right before the match, IMO.

I believe you are trying to ask: How long should I warm up? Practice is something you do so many times a week for a certain amount of times.

Warming up is totally different. 10 minutes should be plenty. If you are one of the lucky players who wake up ready to play, then play cold with no warm up. No one can answer your question; only you can. It's a personal thing.

he is talking about warm up pratice before the match.........

I would warm up the same whether I was playing for a single dollar or a war pension. Try not to put extra pressure on yourself by treating this game differently than your normal game.

It's a little late to try learn any hard shots right before a match. Stroke a few easy-peasy shots and don't aim. Just be smooth and get comfortable on the table. Missing 5 or 6 tough shots in a row isn't a good idea right before you play.

A pretty girl telling you good luck and you're in for a surprise after the match can work wonders as well.

Is this my friend Naji? If so, I know I need 10-5 at one pocket, but I only want the wild 8 and the breaks at 9 ball. P.S. Do you recognize the hat in my avatar?

The good luck wish may help you win but the surprise is her boyfriend and his buddies will be waiting outside to knock you off after you do.

You should develop a warm up routine that you follow before every practice session/match/tournament. It's entirely personal, but I generally like to throw some balls on the table and run them to get in rhythm. This is generally followed by pocketing 30 long straight ins (cue ball 4 inches from the end cushion, object ball in the centre of the table). I shoot a couple of lag shots to get the speed of the table. After which I repeat step 1, to get back into ball running rhythm. After that, pretty much good to go.

Thanks manwon and others share same feeling. Seriously, i see pros practice on TV table before they play a tournament do they ask for cretin time, or the practice time is set by the director.

There is no standard that I know of at pool. In some big tournaments there may be three to five minutes of warmups for each player right before the match. In others, the players can practice on the tables between the time the tables are set up and the first matches of the tournament start, which is sometimes a day. Sometimes a player will get to the table early and practice for half an hour before the match is called. Sometimes the TD controls this sort of thing and sometimes not.

I notice that you're in Virginia. I think you will find a trip to the US Open very educational.

You keep typing cretin instead of certain.

This is beyond typo. Lie down on the couch, tell me what its about.
