I don't know how to title this

Grady's Maryland 14.1 Open Performance

Grady, win a qualifier! You were 1-3 in the Maryland Open held June 28th. You were in the room practicing Thursday and Friday prior to the Saturday start so you knew the tables. You did not make the final 16 in a 40 player field that included 8+ amateurs (The amateur's paid $100 to enter, the pro's and A players $250). You cannot as a reasonably intelligent man expect to get invited to the Worlds Tournament with that recent lackluster showing!

Go qualify!!!

Master pool player, present and past, should be at any true World Tournament, regardless of the quality of their last outing. R-e-s-p-e-c-t. Respect for a life given over to pool and for the contribution made.

Though I must be counted among the so called naysayers, I do care about you, Grady, and am saddened by the difficult circumstances that befront both you and your wife. I hope that life is kinder to both of you in the future and also hope that as many as possible of the few dreams you have left in pool are realized.

If you do appear in the World 14.1 Championships, you may rest assured I'll be there wishing you well.

No matter what, though, your legacy as a great player, promoter, and ambassador for pool are secure in the eyes of this long-term enthusiast.

be easier Grady if you just copied and pasted your past posts about not being invited to 14.1 tournaments.

Go qualify if you want to play, and quit trying to live on the past accomplishments.

This is a very difficult post for me to make, as I have always been a fiercely proud and independant man. My wife is dying from three different kinds of cancer. My business is struggling and I have my own health problems but I'll probably live til' I'm at least 80. Besides family, friends and country the only thing that ever mattered to me was pool.
Instead of picking at me for for really bad reasons why not put forth a 100% AZ effort to get me invited to the Straight Pool tournament. I'd love to be AZ's pro and I have a lot to offer, especially with my new material, which will be coming out in Sept.
Some other things you probably don't know about me:
1. If an establishment had good equipment in a place I was working, I'd offer this to an owner: If I didn't run a 100, I'd work for nothing. If I did he'd pay me double.
2. I ran more than a hundred balls in 71 pool rooms, this with different balls, lights, tables and cloth.
3. I hold the high run record on tables with four inch pockets, one of these in the 180's.
4. I robbed, giving up weight, some much ballyhooed players, at 14.1. I won't mention their names for obvious reasons.
I'm not a bitter old man. I am opinionated but I can still play and it's criminal for me to not get to play in the 14.1 tournament.

Selenium is required for the main tumor suppressing genes to function. Get selenomethionine (selenium yeast) not sodium selenate, which is poison.

Here is a presentation from a research scientist on selenium.

How strong do all you guys think a 180 is on 4" pockets? Does anyone dispute that is a record? It is a very tough game. You can't afford to get out of line very often, and the range for being in line is reduced by more than the pocket's size.

Jim, if we were to respect all of the past master pool players, the field for the World Championship would be filled with old, sub par players who are well past their prime.

The objective of a World Championship should be to assemble the best possible field of the best players in the world. It should not be an "Old Timers" tournament. I have to admit that Charlie W. and Dragon Promotions isn't assembling the best possible field, but this is the way it should be.

In order for an event to be titled "world championship", it must be sanctioned by the WPA. Only one event can receive that sanctioning in each discipline (ie; 8ball, 9ball, 10ball 14.1 etc). I expect if another event attempted to call itself
a 14.1 world championship, it would get played out in court rather than on a pool table.

Rg

Actually this is not true. Any other organization can hold a "World Championship". We see this in plenty of other sports which have more than one organization promoting events.

Anyone can hold a World Championship. The difference is that it won't be a WPA sanctioned or WPA recorded "World Championship".

And in fact during the IPT year they held a "World Championship" for 8-Ball. Of course we all don't think much of it but the fact is that no other organization on Earth had any legal basis to stop the IPT from calling their event a World Championship.

You cannot trademark common descriptions. Also it's worth mentioning that the actual ADVERTISED title of the event is the Predator Straightpool World CHampionship. Gotta be careful how you do these things because in the eyes of the law this is quite different from "14.1 World Championship" or "World Championship of 14.1" World Straight Pool Championship" or any other dozen ways to say it.

I suspect that if someone else were to put on such an event and they had the proper backing and some help coupled with their experience and deep respect for the game that it would quickly overshadow the existing facsimile of the 14.1 World Championships of times past which had none of the "issues" that this one has.

Very well stated. However a reasonable man would expect that players zero history of playing straight pool EVER in any organized competition would not receive invites over established professionals with many titles in their life.

Everyone loves to point out that Grady should just go qualify. I think he should to just stick it up their ass. BUT everyone is also forgetting that when a man is passed over in favor of people WHO CANNOT PLAY THE GAME then when he does go to attempt to qualify this affront is weighing him down.

Think about that. If you felt deeply insulted that you were not invited when UNQUALIFIED players were placed into the field and so as a result you were made to travel to a qualifier and pay $250 then you might not play your best. Granted some people might be fired up to "show them all" but others might be just sick at heart and not really "there".

I just think that it's a bit unfair considering the circumstances to keep picking at the "performance" aspect when Dragon Promotions CONTINUES to place players in the field who have less than ZERO chance to advance and who truly can't spell straight pool and who have NEVER EVER EVER won or done anything of note in any straight pool event.

I personally believe that NO ONE should be invited. Make it ALL performance based. Europe? ONLY the most RECENT winners of the European Championships and National Championships get spots. America? Run qualifiers all over the country so that EVERYONE has a chance to play.

Asia - run qualifiers in every country. NO ONE gets in without having DONE SOMETHING recently to DESERVE IT.

But as far as the current event goes it continues to be a slap in the face of ANY veteran 14.1 player when fluff players are put in the field.

why not just challenge charlie williams to a TAR match of 14.1 race to 300? if you win, then you will prove you can still play and if you lose, well...let it go.

It's unbelieveable to me Grady can't get in this tournament. I guess it's a cold world and we just live in it. I guess you have never done anything for pool and your owed nothing according to the powers that be. No wonder the sport suffers it's a sport that won't even take care of their own. I can't even read this stuff anymore I think throwing up is my only option...............

Yeah, it's late, and it's Friday night....I understand completely.

(But some of us can handle our liquor....) :p ;)

True
I just finished off another glass, ate a nutty buddy, popped open another one and I will have it done before my Totino's pizza is done in 2 minutes and 38 seconds

(You know those frozen pizzas will kill you, right?) :D

I would fly to the ends of the earth if you called out Charlie Williams to play a challenge match race to 300 straight pool. I would definately take some of that!

Grady could set up a diamond table in room 348 at the Marriott then dress up like a young asian princess. When Charlie takes the bait and keycards' the room, BANG! Challenge Match! TAR could already be there too, kind of like a surprise party!

Keep dreaming. Charlie plays in the straight pool challenge every year at the DCC and qualifies for the finals. Grady does not even enter, some straight pool legend...

Thanks for what you, and especially Bob, are doing during the DCC. That's impressive!

Have you asked Grady to join the straight pool challenge?
