So tonight I entered a double-elimination pool tournament at the local bar and maybe 15 people showed up to play. I lost my very first game and got dropped down into the losers bracket. I eventually won a bunch of consecutive games and worked my way into the championship (not a f*&%$#! clue how I did but w/e). My opponent was at the table and He tried to cut a ball into the side but it didn't make it there. He did make contact with his ball but the ONLY ball that hit the rail was the cue ball. I walked to the table ready to pick the ball up and I said "Ball in hand right.." just to be on the safe side. If I had ball in hand I would have had to make one simple shot that set itself up on the eight. My opponent said that since the cue ball hit the rail it was a legal shot. I argued for probably two minutes and the only person that agreed with him was the bartender who was running the tournament.

They were playing "league" rules which I was aware of and when I argued it he said it was a mix of APA rules and their own league rules. IMO this is GAY. There should be a set copy of rules. Even the tournament before this I was playing the exact same guy and it came up and it went the other way. The league they play though is ran by Michael Zimmerman and is called Zims Rack. Michael does have an account on here that goes by the name of Zims Rack, but idk if he gets on anymore. Is this how its usually played in your leagues anyone?:confused::mad::confused::confused:

in all league rules and standardized pool rules that I'm aware of only 1 ball has to hit a rail and that ball can be the cue ball

If you are playing "Ball in hand" rules. After you make legal contact with your own ball, any ball has to hit a rail or go in a pocket. This includes the cue-ball.

I'm sorry, but that was not a foul in any league I've ever heard of.

8 ball or 9 ball ?

Here's the Rules that i know:

LEGAL SHOT
(Defined) On all shots (except on the break and when the table is open), the shooter must hit one of his group of balls first and (1) pocket a numbered ball, or (2) cause the cue ball or any numbered ball to contact a rail. Please Note: It is permissible for the shooter to bank the cue ball off a rail before contacting the object ball; however, after contact with the object ball, an object ball must be pocketed, or the cue ball or any numbered ball must contact a rail. Failure to meet these requirements is a foul.

NO RAIL
If no object ball is pocketed, failure to drive the cue ball or any numbered ball to a rail after the cue ball contacts the object ball on is a foul.

In my league and all the tournaments I have been playing in, if you hit the object ball something must hit a rail to be a legal shot.

For instance, if you hit the 7 ball and it does not contact a rail, but your cue ball does, that is a legal shot.

I'm going to have to agree with your opponent... unless your league's rules are very different, for a legal shot, after the cue ball makes contact with an object ball, the object ball must be pocketed or any ball (including the cue ball) must make contact with a rail.

If I am reading this correctly you are wrong.

He did make contact with his ball but the ONLY ball that hit the rail was the cue ball.

... [called foul]

I argued for probably two minutes
You misunderstand the rules. Anything can hit the rail after contact. The object ball, the cue ball, another ball, anything.

I keep copies of the rules for 8-Ball, 9-Ball, and 10-Ball in my cue case for just this type of situation- you might want to consider doing that as well.;)

oh i was a little confused when i read this until i saw your age in your signature. as long as a ball touches a rail after the object ball is hit it's a legal shot. that's normally a given

Rules

I know Mike and he is a good guy! You need to know what you are talking about before you go around saying that He (or his league system) Screwed you, a little effort on your part to do a simple google search would have saved you the lashing you are getting on here. better to let people wonder if your an idiot than open your mouth and remove all doubt......

Learn the rules

And Travis92 you might want to read the rules before you stuff them in your bag. :idea2: Travis you were wrong. :slap: Sorry what you described was a legal shot.......

Its up to the individual player in any tournament to know the rules.

If you are not sure, you need to ask the TD.
