I have a question that is begging to be answered?

Ithought you said they all came with bad pockets from the factory??

My GC4 pockets were all over they place out of the box. "The Turk" did the rails/cushions and showed me how poor the pockets were. I'm sorry he did not do the original set up.

Mm

A diamond table has heavier rails which makes for a more solid and consistent rebound. They also have a thicker slate. GC is an inch which is about 26mm and a diamond is 30mm. The mass difference is noticeable along with the heavier rails. Most importantly they were designed to play pool on. You can lay your cue on any spot 360 degrees around the thing and make a bridge at any angle required to execute your best stroke with a smooth spot to rest your cue on. Gold Crowns have a lot of obstacles you have to bridge around from the raised metal corner irons to the ball counters on the foot rail. You frequently have to make a less than ideal bridge to avoid scuffing your cue shaft. Sometimes you fail and your shaft suffers for it. I loved my Gold Crown but I have not missed it for a second since I got my Diamond.

Hmm...I'll have to do some more research. What would you consider your top 3 affordable pool tables a home owner should think about? Budget $3k or less.

Gold Crown, unless a furniture style table is part of the equation.

$3k or less...they are in their 70s and only want the table for my wife and I to play on as well as any other relatives that may stop by. They don't care about owning an expensive Gold Crown regardless if it is the best table out there...thinking budget wise here in Iowa.

GC's are cheap. disgustingly cheap. For example, a local pool hall closed and was selling GC III's for $750 each. As long as the slates are good and nothing major is wrong with the table, you should be able to stay within a $3,000 budget.

They want a new table, not used. The only location here locally is a pool and spa place that has jacked up prices so that of course will not work. I am leaning more toward the Olhausen or AE Schmidt. I have an Olhausen that is nice and I read AE Schmidt made solid tables...not many options here in Des Moines unless they want to pay a ridiculous delivery fee.

I had an Olhausen and as many have indicated my wife picked it out including the red felt.....:sorry:

I have since bought a old GC for $1K and redid it to new condition. Again I thought it was the best value, and when it was complete it looked great!

 red felt! We will have tournament blue simonis 860 I believe as the felt on their table. They are pretty much leaving it up to us to pick the table out within their budget. Like I said around here in Des Moines the only options are Muellers which is so far in the lead with an Olhausen table, Homemakers (lol Heritage crap table), Decked Outside which is the AE Schmidt rep in town and still waiting on their final pricing, and that spa overpriced place that we could get a Crown table for over the budget price. They are in their 70s and don't give a hoot on the table really as long as it looks decent. My wife and I care more for the quality so we can play on it. I will try to remember to post pictures after we get it.

I just did a search on Craigslist through SearchTempest for Gold Crowns and was amazed at how many are on there for sale.

Some appeared to be very nice installations. One near me is $800 with Superspeed K55 rails and Simonis 860 because the owner is moving and has to get it out of the house.

Dave & Busters has AE Schmidt tables in all their locations that I'm aware of. I secured the Dave & Busters account in Orange, CA and gave it to Donny, aka SD BILLIARDS to take over fixing their pool tables, all 13 pool tables at that location had rock hard cushions. While I was in the location the first time there, I noticed someone recovering one of the pool tables, so I went over and talked to him, I did not introduce myself as to who I was. I watched as he was trying to hold the cushion together while trying to staple the cloth on the bottom of the rail. I asked him why the cushion's were not being replaced, his reply was that the management was to cheap to pay for it, and that they all needed replaced.....he worked for Triangle Billiards right there in Orange, CA. After speaking with management on the following Monday, the account was Donny's, along with I believe 3 or 4 more locations in the surrounding area....all of them had rock hard cushions.

Keep in mind, when you buy a furniture style for what ever price you pay, the second it's delivered and set up....it just lost at least half the value it was bought for:eek:

What that means is that you're buying a used table value at a retail price. The only pool tables out here that hold their value as close to the new sale price is a Diamond, which is why they're so hard to find used. A new GC5 is close to $11,000, but after buying one, if you decided to sell it a month later, you be begging to get $5,000....and it might take months to find a buyer at that price!

I think they're ugly IMHO
Jason

That's like calling an English Bull Dog ugly....LOL

Ok, maybe they're not that bad. lol.
Growing up on GC's and Anniversary's gives me a little bias. Wish I liked them, I'd have a 10'er - hopefully with a special delivery from RKC :)

As far as the commercial grade tables go, especially barboxes, the bar's set pretty low. I like them and they clean up well.

If you care more about quality so you can play on it, putting Simonis 860 on a table with thin light rails and flawed cheap rubber won't really help much. If space isn't an issue, go with the GC. You won't be disappointed. Economical and quality.
