I heard John Schmidt ran a 407 last week, then 434 just today. Any confirmation?

I am sure Ronnie would get a chuckle out of that. When asked to compare pool to snooker he said it was like comparing putt putt golf to the Masters at Augusta.

In the late '80s I was watching Efren in the practice room at the Sands tournament in Reno. Another player was barking at him to play straight pool. Efren broke and ran two racks in rotation and then looked at the guy and asked, "are you sure you want to play straight pool?"

LOL on the Efren story.
He's ran 5 racks of rotation.
Has ran a rack or two opposite handed as well.

Saw him runout LAST POCKET 8-ball opposite handed or no bridge right hand was the spot he was giving.

Stuart is a much better pool player today than Ronnie O'Sullivan I assure you this

Yes he is , i totally agree

My theory and assumption is based on the striking similarity between straight pool n snooker.
Please dont get me wrong , 9 times out of 10 , a professional pool player will beat a snooker player in rotation games like 8 9 or 10 ball.
However when it comes to straight pool , i think it really favors snooker players with an edge considering the fact that they are typically spoilt for choices with every shot available with the exception of leaving the key ball to open the pack in the next rack.
As compared to snooker when they are often limited to a few reds and the black and they wldnt risk splitting the pack without being sure they will be on a red or color.

Wld definitely love to see a snooker player vs pool players 14.1 challenge !!
Just my 2 cents.

I also think Ronnie could give it a great run.

14.1 is "making balls and going into the rack" and he does that as well as anybody in the game.

Playing on a smaller table, I think would improve his chances. Nothing on an 8-foot table would look "long" for him and the pockets are definitely much looser and bigger than snooker pockets.

At some point, a bank or difficult combination may come up that could give him some trouble. You don't see too many of those in a snooker match.

It would be interesting to watch.

Don't forget all, that Willie's record was in 1956, but straight pool was still played extensively by all the top pro's until well into the 1980's. That is 30 more years of top pro's playing straight pool every day, and on modern GC equipment and Centennial balls. For a bunch of those years, the cloth was Simonis 760. No one came close to 526 in those 30 years.

Thomas Engert's 491 in practice on a 4.5x9 might count? It was probably after the 1980s -- I don't have a date for it.

I think that 760 was found to be too fast for tournaments and quickly changed to 860 as the standard.

There is nobody better equipped to do this today than John Schmidt. He has the ability, the desire and the right mind set to make it happen. The Rebco is an excellent pool table, as good or better than the over sized 8' that Mosconi played on. It's a fair test as far as I'm concerned. The main difference being that John starts with a break shot and Willie didn't. For that reason it might not be accepted into the Guinness Book of Records, since Mosconi set his record during the play of an actual match.

All and all though, it would be a remarkable feat if John can pull it off and make for a very popular DVD to own. It would also have historical significance since it would be so well publicized. John's name would forever be up there with Mosconi's for greatness in the game of Straight Pool.

Maybe Eufemia and Cranfield made longer runs but there is no real proof of either. It's all just hearsay. Mosconi's run was well authenticated with over thirty witnesses who watched the entire run signing a document attesting to it. In John's case he will have the video record, an almost unquestionable piece of evidence.

I wish him luck in his quest to achieve the record.

Ditto, Mr. Helfert, sir, on all counts. Ditto...

So is he still going at it?...
No, he has stopped for now but will try again in a few months -- possibly in March.

And when I watched there was not a lot of ball cleaning going on.:p

Wowser!

John is pocketing an impressive amount of balls. I couldn't set a 5 gallon bucket between my legs and drop 400 balls in it with out a miss.....
