I like Earl, but he'll always be a sore loser. Always has and always will.

I sincerely believe Earl has a bipolar issue or something similar. He shows all the signs of it. I am not making fun, I truly believe it. I have a person in my family with it and they act just like him.

Although I mostly agree, of all the times I think he is justified to do a snap attack is if someone randomly puts hands on him.
I agree with you,I'm not a big Earl fan but to alot of people
including myself,I hate being touched at all. It's invading somebody's personal
space and by judging Earls reaction is secondary to the person who touched
him in the first place.
Now,I understand the pat on the back might of been innocent, but if
people know Earl, they should kno better and for people that don't know Earl,
should keep there hands to themselves,to avoid any issues in the first place.

The part that upset him is probably hearing "It'll be OK Earl"... deep in his heart Earl things will never be OK.

If Earl would have won and the guy patted him on the back in a congratulations way, he probably would have smiled and said thanks.
But if the guy is out there signing autographs and right in peoples reach, he should expect this type thing, im sure he is used to it, but it happens that he lost and was pissed and lashed out.
Either way, no one got hurt so i dont see the big deal.

Well, it *is* a big deal to AzBilliards. Earl had the nerve to wear a white sweater instead of blue. I mean, the nerve!

And did you see him scratch his hair? What, does he have dandruff? Why would a professional pool player scratch their hair in public for all to see? How unprofessional! It is things like that that is putting professional pool in the gutter. Sheesh!

He didnt have one of those little horsey figures on the shirt, did he ??

LOL, yeah, Earl doesn't deserve any of the sh*t he gets on here.

I don't think Earl's antics have diminished "professional pool's" image, I would lay that on many other players, promoters, and situations, but probably not Earl too much.

Saying that, I like watching Earl play at a high level, but am not an Earl fan due to his antics and attitude. He may not be an aszhole, but he has acted like one too many times for me to support him.

As some of you may know, I have spent alot of time with Earl. Working together, eating together even sometimes sleeping in the same room together. So I have some knowledge on some of his qurks. He does not like being touched, could he have handled himself better with the fan of course but given that fact he don't like being touched if makes him jump and the high emotion from his loss I can see how someone could kinda snap at someone. There will actually be a chapter in my book on this. Earl and I almost got into a fist fight but it was my fault I kept pushing his buttons a little. Here is a little example and when I found out he didn't like being touched.

While on the exhibition and clinic tours we had done a few tours by this point and during the 4 hour clinic we would take a break every hour and it was my job to keep everything on time. Seems like an easy job right?? Well what I would do is 5 minutes before the hour was up I would be as undisruptive to the clinic as possible and kinda slide up to Earl and Johnny who were teaching differnt groups on differnt tables and lightly put my hand on their side and softly say "5 Minutes" They would acknowledge with a nod and this gave them 5 minutes to wrap up whatever it was they were teaching at that time. I did this all the time and all of a sudden Earl turns and says "Quit touching me man" I thought he was joking as I had done this same thing 100 times. I said "What??" he says "I just don't like being touched it makes he jolt" I said I've been doing this for ages, and you never said anything" He just responsded "I know and I don't like it" So there you go, there is quite a bit more to this story and it gets a little heated to say the least. All in the book :)

There you have it. Being touched unexpectedly startles him much like the average person is startled by a scary movie scene. He just doesn't like it.

His lack of tact is as high as his irritability factor, but he's true to himself.

Please, by all means explain to us unlightened ones why the NFL is a monster mega billion dollar sport, and has sponsorship galors regardless of the wife beaters, rapists, and DUI driving killers, drug addicts, etc.....

And.........that's JUST the Dallas Cowboys ;)!!! :frown:

I"m not comparing the games

Sure you are. Football is an established sport with a long history and a huge following. It's a national pastime with plenty of famous millionaires, active and retired, and tons of sponsors and huge media coverage. It would take a lot to hurt the popularity of the sport of Football.

Pool is nothing more than a game with a shady history filled with delusional misfits. Keep thinking Earl is helping the game of pool...he's doing nothing more than solidifying the game's reputation as a cesspool of desolates and chronic gamblers.

Pool is a circus and Earl is one of its clowns who has a handful of fanboys. I'd rather see him banned for life so the game "could have a legitimate chance". ;)

If Earl has medical issues, it's his responsibility to manage it. He should see his doctor and get properly treated.

Oh. Wait. I forgot.

The *game* of pool doesn't offer health insurance. I wonder how the "profession" of pool is working out for him?

Quite honestly I can't understand how many people say they care for him but they do nothing to help him make that life altering decision. Retire the cue and get treatment.

There's nothing here for him, he really needs to move on.

Earl was wrong to use the language he did. Part of the cost of being a professional "on stage" is acting like one. Having said that, an unexpected touch has met with a violent reaction a lot more times than once when I was not expecting it. Not bright to touch anyone when they can't see you are fixing to do it and anything other than offering a handshake or a hug from the front to someone you normally hug is an intrusion on their space. Like others, I had a young lady that knew me grab me unexpectedly from behind long ago. I was able to change the angle of the punch coming up as I spun the opposite direction from expected enough that it brushed her hair instead of the original contact under the chin that was my plan as I spun. The fear in her eyes left no doubt that she realized the "joke" was one she would never repeat again.

I can compete well and not win and be at peace with myself. I can compete very well and lose a match to a single moment of stupidity and have the fires of hell burning inside. I have never been ugly to the other competitors and often compliment them but it isn't a time to get chummy with me. I'm quite sure that every match Earl loses he blames on himself not without some justification. Earl is capable of winning any match he gets a single shot in.

It wouldn't be good TV which is all important but I think an athlete deserves a five minute regrouping period after a tough loss, injury, or wreck. There would be a lot less stupid things done and said on camera but where is the entertainment in that?

Good losers aren't winners. Gracious losers might be winners but know that the graciousness is often surface deep. There is perhaps nothing worse after a tough loss than a spectator spending five minutes or longer telling you how you should have won. A very close second is sympathy when it is the last thing you want.

Very well said (typed) Sir. I for one very much agree with you.

Thank you for this post. It really makes it easy to see why he had that kind of reaction, especially after a tough loss.

Earl, like him or not is an exceptional human being with incredible eyesight

I sincerely believe Earl has a bipolar issue or something similar. He shows all the signs of it. I am not making fun, I truly believe it. I have a person in my family with it and they act just like him.

Earl just had the misfortune to be one of the most talented people ever born, but born in the worst situation for a competitor. Many of your super talented sports celebrities have issues that other people cover for, make up for or they simply do the "task" for the person. PR Groups are hired to do this job and they do it very well for many of your top performers.

Earl didn't have this luxury and has to face life on life's terms which is difficult for someone that is brilliant, because there MUST be a balance - this is an unwritten law of human behavior.

I've spent a lot of time around Earl through the years playing tennis, golf, and of course playing and talking a LOT about pool. He was one of the co founders of the PCA with myself and George Breedlove and also did the most amazing thing in the history of pool - He RAN 11 RACKS for a million dollar prize annuity, and he did it on THE FIRST DAY.

Earl, like him or not is an exceptional human being with incredible eyesight, hearing, and he probably even "feels" more intensely than normal. I know he could see my golf ball 275 yards away and tell me how it lay on the ground (in a divot, on a hill, or sitting "up").....that's a fact, and I never would have believed it if it hadn't happened time and time again.

I'm not threatening anyone, just telling it like it is. You don't walk up to people and put your hands on them. You don't know if it was a pat on the back, or a solid slap of enthusiasm that was harder.
I attend a lot of tournaments. When you see me, come up from behind and slap me on the back. Better yet, put your hands on my wife or daughter and we'll see if we can't give you a lesson in etiquette that will be long lasting.

We get it. You are a bad ass.
