I need help.

I find myself wanting to keep every cue im going to build. I just got some wood in the mail yesterday, and instead of thinking about making it for someone else, i wanna make myself another cue out of it, lol. Every cue i have in progress, i want to keep. Its like i cant hardly bring myself to share it with anyone, lol. I know im not alone here either, lol. Maybe after i get a bunch of finished cues under my belt it will be easier, but i doubt it.

once you let go its very nice to see someone enjoying a cue you built horrifying when one is beat to hell and needs a refinish.

for me id like to keep them all. Im sure it becomes easier when you build for money rather than passion, but i dought it.

Ive only made six sneakys so far, and none of them are worth a damn. I wouldnt even show them to anyone at the cue show, but the last two are straight as anarrow and play pretty good, so im on the road to making a good one. It wouldnt be possible if it werent for all the help i got from this dude in ohio though, lol.

23 years and 1,000+ cues and I still want to keep the one I'm making. Really. Every time I try a new cue I wonder about keeping it. Almost as bad as that, is doing something new for someone, and as you progress, you come up with new ideas and start another before finishing the last and on and on and on. You can get lost.

you think of something different to do on the next one
it's like dominos
every cue leads to another and so on and so on
after 5 years, you'll look back at some of your first cues and you'll think to yourself,
oh good lord, what the hell was i thinking when i built that one !!
i've got some out there i wish were in the firepit

I built a cue for my 16 year old grandson. The finish was perfect. I watched him drop it on a gritty concrete floor 5 times in 15 minutes. The finish is destroyed. The little bastard will buy his next one............

Like any addiction, It has stages.You are at stage one. Stage two will be when you are proud to show what you have done. Some where some time a person will make you an offer you can't refuse. There is a rush when you get paid for your hard work. You will also enjoy seeing people take your cues out of thier cases. Then will come a day when you get beat by one of your cues. Even when you lose. There is a feeling of victory.

As far as meds goes. I would have to say $ works. Unless you are very well funded. I am sure there is a long list of things you would like to add to your shop or wood you haven't tried yet. The other plus to selling a cue is. It can give you a chance to pay back the people who sacrifice so you can have shop time. Generaly every cue I sell is a dinner out for my wife.

You have the sprouting seed of a good cuemaker. The approach that every cue you build is as if you were building it for yourself will push you into adapting better building methods as you learn, and it will force you into absorving every bit of info out there.
The fact that you're keeping some cues at this stage will also make available to you a
living progress report. You will use them as reference, and will learn from what your eyes cannot see now but will as time goes on. It's a tough and demanding road and you must be patient above all else.You have to love the act of creation not the final destination of yourself or the cue.
Oh, before i forget, the electric bill is due

I got rid of my wife, thats how I can afford to buy supplies now, lol. The only one missing me is my beagle, and he doesnt care as long as theres food in his bowl, lol. I made my son a purple heart sneaky, and he loves it, but I wouldnt show that cue to anyone, lol. He just loves it because I made it. I will definately be making him a better one here soon. I have ten people wanting a cue from me already and I havent even showed them anything yet, lol. I gotta get busy!

I havent made many yet, but now that I have better equipement, and a decent tapering setup, I can already see vast improvement in my cues. Its exciting to me that Im close to actually being happy with my cues. I will post some pics in the near future if I am pleased with how the next few turn out. Thank you and everyone else for their encouragement.

I have only made a couple, but the one I really want to keep is still a big dowel of the curliest OAK I've ever seen. I have 4 of them and I can't think of a way (other than staining) to make them look more interesting than they already are. It may just be rings and a wrap, or not. The stuff is stunning with Watco natural on it. Aniline dyes are neat as well. It seems like the more wood I get, the more ideas I get and only get started before I start on something else. I still can't get up the nerve to use all that snakewood I snagged for a song.

I may actually have a buyer for my first 'sellable' cue. I've been playing with it for a couple of months. He played with it last week and fell in love with it, 4 compound points up and down of Peruvian pecan and flamed box elder into curly maple and a brown/white linen wrap. It'll be hard to let it go because I'm kinda proud of it, but I sure could use the money.

Coming from an engineering background and my father being a machinist most of his life, I am so freaking anal that if I see ANY flaw I scrap the whole thing. It has turned out to be a very costly hobby..
