If you were spending 2,000 on a cue

might as well throw my subjective picks into the hat:

if I were buying a $2k cue it would be a scruggs, james white, or mottey.

someone mentioned Tascarella which are also great cues but you would be at least $500 short for a pointed tasc in nice shape.

cues that play like $2k but cost less than $1k are Olneys, Diveneys and Jensens.

GL

best,
brian kc
Love the names you mentioned! And 2k just falls short of a Tasc.......or James White. If I were spending 2k, I'd go another $500, as the extra would open up many more possibilities.

So many great cue makers. It also depends what one is looking for in a cue. What kind of inlay work do you want, etc. Are you concerned about resale value-collectability??

2k range......Gilbert, Nitti, Scruggs
Less than 2k Samsara, Kent Davis, Tony Sauer

Obviously all of our opinions are subjective!

If you had decided to spend 2,000 dollars on a cue what would you get?

This was your question, you asked if I you, meaning the reader, had 2k what would you get.. you got an answer, in fact two pointing out lessons. You did not ask what YOU should get.. you asked what I would get.

I need lessons.. so a single cue will not help me.

JV

Here we go again. No.2 pointing out lessons....haha...amazing

1. Just because I spend 2000 on a cue doesn't mean I can't spend "800" on lessons.

2. Just wondering what makes you so sure I need lessons?

3. With this philosophy I could just as easily buy a 300 dollar cue and spend 1700 on lessons.

I appreciate the financial advice but I have 2k to spend ON A CUE and that's where that 2k is going.
Not lessons, not paying bills, not getting new tires or buying groceries.......etc.

Anyway, I've gotten some excellent replies.
I never knew I could get a South West, Tascarella, Gilbert and some of the other ones mentioned for 2k.
I'll look into all those things.

Dude, since you want to quote me, I also said "2000 on A CUE"...

Why does this have to be complicated?
It's a pretty plane question.

This thread has been very very informative so far.

Let's keep it that way.

Thanks

YES YES YES....

-R- is the choice to make..... dooo eeet and live happily ever after. This is the guy Im gonna have make my cue. I have a butt made by someone whose name rhymes with Hurtin Stain, and I wanna have JR get up on this thing as soon as I do not have a major tragedy plaguing me.

Regards

Bob Frey cue.

+1------- for sure. AND you will actually get your cue on or before when you are told, NEVER any BS involved - EVER! Bob is one of the BEST builders you could ever work with.

Pretty sure the OP said everything possible to prevent this kind of answer.

Freddie <~~~ can't we just want some fancy arrows?

Lolololol!!!! Thinking the exact same thing

Same here because you do not want to screw up with this OP...he is tough, and that's no shit.

I'm staying with Josswest, a true $2000 cue

Men. let's stay within the intent of the original topic.
Professor 9Ballr will kick you ass if you get off topic, and I don't want to be anywhere near this thread when it happens.

Peace

Hey Curtis glad to see ya around brother! How's that comeback coming along man? You go to 999's much? Hit me up if you go to the new place "Brews & Cues " at Big Daddys old location. I agree with Cornerman as far as I'm sure most of the recommendations people are giving are from cues they currently own, it kinda makes sense. I too gave my recommendation of a cue I presently own. Don't know if value is being taken into consideration , but if it is I know Freys hold their value very well. Can't speak as to most of the other recommendations but I know Freys sell for good money second hand. I also know for $2k you can pretty much get a " monster " from Bob for that amount.

On an aside; CuesBlues , I'm pretty sure if you were to go to Steinway Billiards up in NYC, Earl " The Pearl " Strickland gives lessons there for $75/ an hour I do believe. That's a pretty good deal as far as I'm concerned. So, let's say you found a cue for say $1850 you could also do a couple hours with " The Pearl "! You could also get a cue for like $1700 ( and still have a nice long list to choose from ) and you could get 4 HOURS!!!! of lessons from Earl The Pearl and really put that $1700 cue to good use. I'm seriously thinking that the next time I'm up that way I might take a couple hours of lessons from the Pearl just to be able to say that I did it. Honestly I think $75 an hour is quite reasonable to get instruction from one of the best of all time if you really think about it. Bottom line; as I'm sure the OP already knows and probably was the reason for this thread in the first place, $2k gives you many many options on a cue. OP, are you looking to get something custom made or are you OK with a catalog cue? I think that should be the first question that needs answering as this will help you vastly in narrowing down your choices. Good luck on your search and be sure to let us know where you end up and why.

Dean really gave a great endorsement to two wonderful cue-makers.In fact, Dean is a reason why my IRA has a lot less money than before.
I had an urge to design my own pool cues and needed a cue-maker.There are so many to choose from & seeing photos of cues wasn't enuf.

When you order a cue to be built, you really do not want any hassles or issues communicating with the cue-maker and remaining updated on progress.
Both Bob Owen & Jerry Rauenzahn excel at customer communications & go out of their way to keep their clients informed about their pool cue's development.

Furthermore, their accomplishments in cue-making are self-evident truths and both are interested in building you a pool cue exactly as you'd imagine & want it to turn out.
Since 2013, which is when I placed my 1st order with Bob for a cue, I followed that up with placing a order with Jerry and then another from Bob and then another from Jerry.

The biggest compliment you can give any cue-maker is to do repeat business....IMO. Your wallet pays a lot bigger compliment to a cue-maker than your mouth ever could.
"Put your money where your mouth is." is an expression coined over the years and it's so true......talk is cheap....I could endorse Barry Szamboti all day long but owning one...well?

With a budget of $2,000, you could get a very handsome design (at least a Level 5) cue from either Bob Owen or Jerry Rauenzahn...re: Dean's does projects with both cue-makers.
My last two cues that were made fby Bob & Jerry that arrived this month are truly out of this world beautiful. The execution is flawless.....the designs sparkle......and both cues arrived "early"

I offer you my unconditional endorsement of both cue-makers and if it were not for the dumb CA ivory ban, I'd have already placed orders again with both Bob & Jerry for 2 new designs I have in mind.
This is what you get with either cue-maker.....really attractive pricing, creative suggestions, precision cue-making, great communications, progress photos, complete trustworthiness, and completed on time.

Ordering a custom cue from either Bob Owen or Jerry Rauenzahn is a sure fire approach to finding pool cue nirvana and you will not be disappointed and in fact, will enjoy a great, satisfying experience.

p.s. If any of you are at the Mezz stop in Fresno the weekend of June 11th, find me at Diamond Billiards. You can examine up close the 4 custom cues Bob & Jerry made for me and see how great both guys are.

A satin SW.

Baring who I know personally, I think I'd ask YOU to make a nicely figured birdseye maple merry widow with a segmented 3 piece pitch black gabon ebony handle.. Yeah, the "new" tuxedo look, that would do nicely...

I would probably contact Deanoc and take whatever he was selling for 2k.

Never had the guts to go for his no pic deals. But if I have to fantasize that would be it.

Honestly, these cues are not really my style but I have to say they are both gorgeous! I especially like the one with the blue.

I would recommend personally:
Steve Dunkel
Pat Diveney
Jim Pierce
Leon Sly
Josh Treadway

People I'd still like to spend that much with are:
Jerry R.
Bob Owen
Bob Durzinsky (spelling?)
Ariel Carmeli
Pete Tasc
Brent Hartmen
Kenny Murrell
Chad McClellan
Steve Lomax
Andy Gilbert

I'm sure I'm missing a few too

This thread seems a lot like the threads that ask which tip is best. All you get is the names of everybody who makes a product that meets the description as well as a few that do not. In this case, every cuemaker who makes a $2K cue has been listed except two that immediately come to mind.

Eddie Cohen
Jules Patterson (EDC)

I’m still looking for that $2K Searing or Szamboti.
