how many tables?

181 players in 2 days. INSANE! But I get to see so many friends that it's worth it. And Jeff Bey who owns Hollywood Billiards is a great guy, and real supporter of Pool. We just made a deal to do three more events there this year with 3K added to each one. A Ten Ball tourney, a One Pocket event and another 9-Ball. All with low entry fees, $75.

Jay,

A heckuva job regardless but just curious, how many tables did you have to run 181 players on in two days? Double elimination? I'm just trying to learn what is possible with a good TD.

Great gesture

When Fatboy walked in Saturday morning, he handed me a thousand and said just add this to the purse. Pretty cool gesture on his part.

It doesn't hurt to throw an extra thousand into a regional tournament. I keep saying the guy is good for pool, and he keeps proving it. You can say what you want about me (I'm not thin skinned), but I'm giving the guy a well deserved pat on the back. Having Johnny in the tournament was a huge plus. And it wouldn't have happened if Fatboy hadn't foot the bill.
Fatboy,

It's great to have you back on AZ and involved with pool. I wished we had many more men like you in the pool world.....

I believe it was 27 or 28.... Other than the tables downstairs having different cut pockets it's a great venue..... It would be awesome if they had 32 tables cut to the size of the tables downstairs. They might be a little too tight but a little looser than my home table so I can't complain about that. They're about 4 1/8 inches at the opening of the pocket. Can't help it I carry around a little tape measure to measure pockets wherever I go....lol.

Welcome back Fatboy!!!!!! You are a major contributor to this forum and are an essential ingredient to making this whole thing work! That's if this really is Fatboy you know with identity theft an all. Show the forum guys three forms of identification and you're cool. Just kidding! Welcome back. Philw

Welcome back Fatboy. I started to take a hiatus and then I realized how insane I'd go at work without AZ. I get burned out on internet poker from time to time and I can always count on AZ for entertainment. Maybe I could just do more actual work, but then again who wants to do that?

We had 27 tables, 15 "Ernesto" tight ones downstairs and 12 looser ones up stairs. I used them all the first day to go from 181 to 64 players (all in the money). We played "roll on, roll off", meaning we put another match on a table as soon as the previous one ended. No time schedule, just had to estimate how long before a player was up. We would work down the winner's side and then move over to the loser's side, back and forth all day.

We started at 10 AM on Saturday morn and finished at Midnite. Constant play all the way on all 27 tables to get down to the final 64. On Sunday we started at 10 AM on all 27 tables but after the first two rounds, I was able to finish on the 15 tables downstairs. The finals went off at about Midnite. To do an event this big in one weekend you really need 32 tables to do it comfortably. This one was intense. Even Johnny called it a "grind".

I may limit the fields to 128 for the next three tourneys I do here. That way I can actually "schedule" matches with times. What a luxury that would be. :)

Schedule's would be great Jay. Please consider it. I know that the money would be a little less, but I feel that that would be a much more enjoyable experience. Although it was much better this year compared to when they first moved it to hollywood two years ago. It was a nightmare that first year that it was at hollywood. They told me three times that I had to wait only 45 minutes when I ended up waiting 6 hours. I would've loved to take a nap on one of the couches had I known that it would be that long. It was much better this year. Of course I wasn't in it long enough to get tired this year, lol.

Jay,

You and Mark did an absolutely super job and we appreciate all you did to make this an outstanding event. It was a lot of fun to see players like Johnny Archer and Scott Frost come in for this as well as the local champs, Ernesto and Oscar, Corey, Max and Dave.

Thanks for talking me into staying in it. I have a virus and was pretty much ready to collapse but it was worth the wait.

Fatboy helped make this event outstanding by bringing in Archer, no doubt - everyone loved to see him play.

It was also a pleasure meeting up with a few AZ guys, Jaden (Kevin) and Frank DaBarba - shooting the bull.

Jay makes it look easy. There were no problems except for the occasional foray by a player onto the microphone that Jay reined in promptly. :D I'm really glad to hear of the new upcoming tournaments at Hollywoord Billiards. It's a class organization. :)

181 players is hard to imagine. Finishing them in two days with room to spare is awesome. Please keep me posted on your future tournaments at this pool hall. I like weekend tournaments and I may be able to attend one that is only for a weekend without using a get out of jail card.

I especially like the payout percentage. I've never heard of a third of the players coming in the money before. I like it. 25% of the field has now become the norm but hope that moves to the 33% number for other tournaments. How did the players respond to the deep payout?

Thanks,
JoeyA
