Well, As many of you know, I take photos at different tournaments of the players.

So, I get an email on Monday afternoon at 1:45 pm from an ESPN3.com email address:

Hello,

I was told to contact you per the people at the US Open 9Ball Championship, Chesapeake. I am looking for a couple of high resolution action photos from last year's tournament to accompany a brief listing of the championship.

Can you provide?

It takes me a while to get Diana Hoppe's email address and at 9pm I reply:

Hi Shawn,

I have photos of some of the players, but not from that event. If you need some photos from that event, Diana Hoppe can help you out (she took photos there last year). Her email is: xxxyyyy@blah.com

He replies at 9am on Tuesday:

You probably can help me. As long as the photos represent a 9 Ball Tournament it is fine. Please send action, someone taking aim maybe or just after a shot, no bigger than 3 MB each (per email). The photos run thumbnail size so should be easily identifiable.

Then an hour later he emails me again and says:

I tried to email Diana but her spam blocker is blocking me with an ERROR message. Do you have a phone number? Are you able to send me something?

Then at 2pm today (Wednesday) I send an email:

Shawn - how many different players do you need and when do you need them by?

He replies in less than a minute:

The deadline has passed. Sorry.


OMG! I then ask him if they ran the story w/o photos or did he get photos from another source and he says:

We cannot include events that do not have a photo accompanying. I contacted you and (someone else).

I then see his signature says "Photo Editor ESPN the Magazine"

To say I am sick to my stomach is an UNDERSTATEMENT!! OMG! Billiards could have been in ESPN Magazine again and I dogged it b/c I didn't know he had a such a short deadline!

I told him to contact me in the future and I would respond ASAP next time, now that I know the deadlines are so short.

I am an embarrassment to the billiard community. Mr. Wilson should ban me. :(

Thanks, sixpack. :D I'm not worried about me, though, I am disappointed about the chance that "Billiards" could have been in ESPN The Magazine again - it doesn't happen often. :(
 
Don't beat yourself up!! I would have expected someone with such a short deadline to tell you that they had a short deadline. You are an asset to the billiard community missy!!

I highly doubt the deadlines are that short. He just waited until the last minute. Either way, it's his fault for not telling you the deadline, and for not being more specific to begin with about what he needed and what would be acceptable. It's a loss for pool, but nothing you should personally feel guilty about. You do more for pool than most people out there!
 
Hey Doll....you dogged nothing! You tried, did the best you could, working in the past in some areas I have, I honestly say...he kinda dogged. It was his reponsibility to let folks know his deadlines and the scope of the photos he could use. It happens. Call me on my cell if ever you need photos...I have some. JR and Sally are excellent sources also, Ashi, Dave Thomson, Rick Schmidtz :) all talented folks with huge array of photos they have taken over the years and are all easy to get ahold of pretty much. :)

I give you a green rep for your hard work at trying to get a virtual stranger something that he needed. The only time we really fail is when we don't try :)
 
You should not be upset. I look at it this way if everyone gave as much to pool as you do maybe pool would have a better image. So many people take what they can but never give back.
 
Everyone dogs it from time to time. Sometimes we dog it because of a weakness in our character. Sometimes we dog it because the investment is too high for us to stand.......... And then.................... sometimes we dog it because we just didn't know we had a match.

Experience can build character and in your case, I would bet my bankroll.

I don't understand why you just don't send them NOW.
They could be used for the future. PLUS you would have made the CONTACT.

Definitely not your fault. He should have made it very clear upfront what the deadline was.

Send him some pictures anyway so that he has them in case they need a last minute filler.

MM...and please help Disco win a FF game!!!

Have you heard that saying, "your're lack of planning (espn) does not constitute and emergency on my (your) part."?
I think it is their fault for not giving you enough time to compile the photos. The guy did a bad job not you, I know you and I know you did everything possible to do the right thing. Don't be so hard on yourself.
 
I can see that Trigger wanted to be pc about whose pics would be made public because that photog would probably want some sort of contract/compensation with ESPN.

Trigger, you did right. The ESPN person should've given you leeway of a couple days before their deadline.

And for all those not agreeing with giving out photos from photogs without their permission, there are a few photogs on this forum who would object with free sharing without their permission.

I use to work for the Tallahassee democrat as a photojournalist, deadlines are that tight and tighter for weekly magazines, We once got a call from Time, they needed a photo of someone who was appearing before State congress, it was my turn around, I took the photo and went back to the paper, as per instructions, They sent a cab by to pickup the film (this was a while back) and take it to the airport, where it was sent out blue label?

They also pay pretty well, $200 for 45 minutes work,but I bet they paid more for the transportation! This was back when $200 was real money @ 1982), of course we go a call like that 3-4 times a year max.

Faded that many times in the twenty years I spent in the Army. We need that yesterday. I've been working on that time machine ever since. You did the best you could!

Barbara is right. You never give out someone's work without their expressed permission. Copyright, usage, and compensation are involved.
