Included with tip install ?????????

What all do you repair guys include with just a basic tip install ?? Do you include conditioning the shaft (clean, seal, & wax) also ??? I've looked at alot of different repair price lists and they all will have a price for a tip install (usually $15.00 for a basic tip from the majority I saw) and also will have a price for a shaft cleaning (usually $10.00 bucks from the majority I saw).

If someone brings you a shaft to have a el-cheapo $15.00 tip install done, do you charge extra for the shaft cleaning or is it a courtesy thing ??
 
You give them free spit to burnish the tip.:D
Clean the ferrule.
Cleaning the shaft is extra.
Some don't like their shafts cleaned once they have the patina they like.
Don't clean them without their permission.
$10 for clean, seal and wax is normal.
Magic eraser clean, 1000 grit and up then seal and polish.

I would highly recommend never touching a customers shaft without his prior approval, and if he wants you to clean it, charge accordingly.
 
Hi,

I give a free shaft reconditioning with a ferule job. Not with a tip.

If steaming dents out is required, that is extra.

Thanks for the responses guys, I just always assumed it was a courtesy thing if you were having a tip installed, but not touching a customers shaft without prior knowledge makes perfect sense.

You mean you don't charge for your spit !!!

You're also the 2nd person to suggest the use a magic eraser. Never thought about it before.
 
I install non layered tips and charge normal cost lets say $15.00. There is not shaft clean included.

Layered tips the price of cleaning the shaft is included with the tip price.
I always ask if they want it cleaned. If they don't I deduct $5.00 from the price. Example= Kamui Black = $50.00 and included cleaning, $45.00 if they don't want cleaning.

I love the ones that bring in own tip. I don't let them save a dime. It's still $15.00 to put on nonlayed tip. On a layered tip I subtract what the tip cost me and charge them the difference.

sounds like you get some enjoyment out of that.
 
Its a courtesy thing for me. I do ask if they want a shaft clean, everyone says yes.

I do charge $10 for a clean with dent removal extra.

I don't like to see a dirty shaft go out of my shop.

It is just part of my business plan in the beginning. Others may not subscribe to the way I do things.

Customers are usually pretty amazed at getting a shaft back that looks like new, and the finish lasts for some time. I use Chris's shaft seal and a wax.

You get yourself a good rep for being fair and now, I find that people are bringing me shafts just for a clean.

It all comes back on you in the future. Seems to work for me.
 
I include everything as long as it not thrashed. In my area pool is pretty spread out. In my home town I only do about 2 a year. Majority is from areas around me and sometimes its quite the drive. I have players driving 40 miles just to get a tip so im happy to give them a little something for free. Kinda my way of saying thanks. I bet I only do 15-20 tips a year. I get people all the time though asking how to do it just so they can save a buck. They dont realize im giving them a good deal. I just say well if you mess it up you can always bring it to me to fix it lol. I also get a kick out of someone bringing there own tip and hoping to save a buck. I just subtract my cost of what the tip would be and do the job. Sometimes it cost them more since they dont get the discounts and bulk deal I can get.

I charge 10.00 to clean, polish and remove dents. If they have a tip installed I drop the price of the cleaning to 5.00. My normal tip installation is 10.00 up. All 1 piece tips are standard 10.00 tips. I guarantee all of my tip installations for the life of the tip. If it falls off three years down the road I replace for free. If someone brings their own tip in I install it for 10.00, the standard tip price. I still guarantee the tip not to come off but I let them know that If it should fail I will replace it with a LePro.
I used to clean and polish for free but it came time to raise my prices so instead I kept the installations the same price but started charging for the cleaning. It takes me less than three minutes to clean the ferrule, install a tip, trim tip to ferrule and shape the tip. It takes at least 10 minutes to clean and polish the shaft.

I never throw in a cleaning.
I charge 15.00 to install cheap tips or the customers own tip.
Cleaning is 15.00 too
I have a lot of customers that come once a month for cleanings by themselves.
It would be akin to going for tires and getting a free oil change.....

For the El Cheapo tips your talking about IE, Triangle, Le Pro, Elk master I charge $10, and then if they want the shafted cleaned and reconditioned I charge an extra $10.

I think my prices are very fair and for those who don't think so they can do the work themselves!!:smile:

I don't get any enjoyment out of it, but I feel the same way the person you quoted does. The price of the tip is immaterial, what people do not realize is that the main cost of tip replacement is professional installation. People who have gone to hack understand this very very well, so no further words are needed.;)
 
Oddly enough,I haven't had a single customer ask me to NOT clean a shaft yet.

I ask ahead of time,esp with a stranger or at a tournament. So far,everyone I've done work for likes the fact that I hand their shafts back in better condition than they gave it in.

One piece tips are 15.00,the cleaning comes with it unless specified otherwise.

Layered tips are a sore subject for me locally,no one likes the idea of 35.00 for a Kamui Black,Moori,etc so I don't get much action there,unless it's at a tournament.

When I do,the cleaning comes with it.

Ferrule work is also complimented with cleaning.

It would feel weird to me to install say an ivory ferrule and not hand it back to them as close to new as possible without just sanding the crap out of it.

At a tournament last year,a customer asked me to work on a 40 yr old Joss West with a couple shafts that to my knowledge had never been worked on before. They left looking unplayed but snot-slick and with a truly happy owner :cool: :thumbup:. Tommy D.

Considering the cost of most single piece tips is less than a dollar, that's understandable. Plus what you are really paying for is the cue makers skill, knowledge, experience, and his investment in the equipment.

When I bring in my own tip, it's not to save money, it's because I want that "milk dud" or "compressed" Triangle installed.
