The International Challenge of Champions starts tomorrow 7 Oct2014 3pm
Used to be a prestigious event and regarded as one of toughest to win. It used to be 8 players field and winner take all $50K prize
But since 2009 , event was watered down to only 4 players single elimination and smaller winners take all prize of only $25K
Now only need to win 2 matches to be champion so IMHO bit of a joke !

Players:
Darren Appleton
Shane Van Boening
Thorsten Hohmann
Dennis Orcollo

2001 Chao Fong Pang vs Bustamante
Lots of incredible shotmaking in final rack decider
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jcv9KZVo40o

FORMAT/ RULES (Previous Editions)
Each match is compose of two sets; each of them is race to 5 and in
alternate break. Players lag to determine who shall break in the
first set. The player who loses that set will break in the second.

A 30-second shot clock rule of is used. This means a player must
make a shot within 30 seconds lest the other player will receive
ball-in-hand. Each player, however, can call for an extension but
only once per rack.

Unlike other nineball tournaments, a player must call the 9-ball
before pocketing it. Failing to call the shot or the 9-ball going in
another pocket other than the one called will result the 9-ball
being respotted and the player loses his turn at the table. Also, a
player can't win a rack by pocketing the 9-ball in the break.

To win a match, a player has to win both sets. If the sets are split
(one player winning the first but other player winning the next),
players again lag to break at the one rack decider.

:D

Thanks for the info. I went to a few of these when they were held in CT. Dropping it to 25k price is not as bad as having a field of 4. They may as well split it 4 ways and have a $6,000 vacation.

Only in pro pool does the prize money go down over 25 years .

Where in California will the event take place? (I'm too lazy to google.)

I can't believe, Challenge of Champions has turned into an extremely well paying Mini tournament. With four players they should at least do a round robin format to see who comes out on top. Other than the final prize for the one winner which is still a great pay day for the one winner, I think the make it happen events from Accu-stats beat the heck out of this(Pat you and the guys are awesome!!!! gotta love those events. There's always amazing play at them all and they feel like a true event.

I'm sure having the title of Challenge of Champions Champion is amazing to have on your playing resume but this reduction in prize and size just isn't feeling right for the inherent significance of the title. Also weren't there other Champions that should have been included? Maybe I didn't keep track this past year as well as I should have to make this statement but I'm curious what others think.

Good shooting to you all,

Kevin

Thanks

Thanks for this information!

But what kind of format is this, where only 4 players participate?
Always thought, there should have been 16 instead of 8, cause it started with quarter finals.
Now it's starting with semis?

Let's play every player against each other - minimum...

... in Tennis they're playing 2 groups of 4 players with round robin.
Then semis with winner A : second B, and winner B : second A!

I hope nobody dumps. :D
Tournament ?
That's sad .
16 players should have been the minimum number.

Saver time

Where is Buddy Hall and Mike Lebron?
Mike bragged to me an Efren how they Dumped?
Looks like there is no Dump this time.

I don't like Invitationals, it set's up a four person conspiracy.

How about a Saver, they can all make Money$.

The Draw

does anyone know what the draw is?

The womens event is races to 4. Kelly Fisher vs Karen Corr and Ga-young Kim vs Allison Fisher is the first draw on the womens side. Not sure bout the men.

I was told espn will be airing the event shortly after this weekend. So make sure to check listings in the next coming weeks and set dvrs to record.

I read on the casino's Web page that it will air in December or January on ESPN.

Will it be livestreamed?

Somehow I think Appleton will win. He is a real grinder.

You can guarantee , there is some kind of cutting up that money.

Unless Strickland is playing, he isnt sharing with no one!

Strickland mite be crazy at times, but you can bet your last dollar on him, knowing that he is trying his heart out to win, I mite be a little crazy myself, but I would say that Strickland can careless about the money he just wants to win!

Well to fair this was a special event and never a real tournament. It was a business and like in all businesses there are good times and lean times.

It's still a good payday for a couple days of work.

Pretty even field. Split 4 way, 6K each and play winner takes home the final 1K.
