Interview with Greg Sullivan

I am lucky and get to see and talk with Greg every now and again. He frequents the same pool hall as I do and he is the same person off camera than he is on camera. He has no problem calling like it is and he is right on with his comments.

I have read through these threads and noticed that several wished others like Greg would get involved. AZB is pretty big and has a lot of good members. Why don't we all figure out a way to get involved as well as AZB in starting a Pro Tour?

His UFC analogy was excellent and very true...sometimes it's that kind of outside the box thinking that pool needs IMO

That was an interesting interview….Greg Sullivan seems to be very knowledgeable guy and has a good insight….for the most part.

However, I think the foundations that pool is missing is the audience. Why do you think snooker is so successful and why does it have such a huge public participation and those handsome payouts often upwards of $200,000 to the winner of the tournament.

I'm a one pocket player myself and rarely play anything else. There is no other game that challenges with creativity, skill and thinking as does one pocket….It's the ultimate pool game. In fact, of all the games and sports I've ever played it is the best all round, most challenging game….That includes football, basketball, socker, tennis, golf and all the others.

But….most average people that still play pool choose 8 ball. Those are the people that would pay to view matches on TV IMO. And those are the ones that would draw the sponsors and advertisers.

And not knocking 10' tables…I think they have their place. But, people want to see their favorite players shoot perfect games every now and then.

How many 147's (the maximum score in pro snooker) have been run on a 6'x'12 table. Quite a few….even in World Championships. I can't see many perfect matches or anything comparable to a (maximum 147) ever happening on a 10' table. But I could be wrong.

IMO…that's what draws the people to snooker…The Steve Hendry's and the Ronnie O'Sullivans.

I know Kevin Tredeau tried it once and he ended up with some payout problems but….That doesn't mean someone with better management couldn't make it work.

Anyway…thanks for the interview and that's my opinion.

Snooker is big because you can legally gamble on it. If casinos and sport books online took bets on American pool it would be big. Johnnyt

The last time they tried that the players dumped on them. I wouldn't hold my breath.

Bonus ball is more fitting for the UFC analogy imo. A tougher game that requires all skills to be successful at it. Bonus ball is one game which is why it is more fitting to be compared to the UFC. An all around would be better compared to a completion that required fighters to box, then wrestle, then Jiu-jitsu individually.

I know bonus ball catches a lot of flack here but it really is a great game imo.

Only a small percentage of the snooker viewing audience places wagers, actually.

Snooker has big money purses for one reason only -- people watch it. TV ratings in the UK are still solid, and in China they're off the charts. The recent final of the International Championships had a worldwide viewing audience of more than 200 million. Heck, the NFL doesn't even do that!

So, why do people watch?
Solve that, and you've solved how to make pool more popular.

That was the most interesting 30 minutes of pool footage I have ever seen, thanks for taking the time both Mark and Greg.

So, we "almost" had a small 4 stop actual tour forming, a foundation and groundworks for something that could have grown from there, and Bonus Ball was a large part of what very possibly aborted it before it could be born.

WTG Bonus Ball, W...T...G...
