I've been out of the game for a while and have noticed that leather wraps have gained in popularity. I'd like to read other players' thoughts about this (and what each of you prefer and why). Please weigh in!
By the way, I have a nice player that needs rewrapped, thus this will serve as part of my research.
Thanks in advance.

elephant ear

I am sort of a quirky character about wraps and probably alot of other things too. I have had several types , water bufalo ,leather, lizard and always returned to linen. Steve Lomax put a elephant ear wrap on my cue a few months back and it's the best ever . The initial cost is high but from what I read and hear it will never wear out and feels perfect on my cue.Steve does the best job I have ever seen of putting on a leather or exotic wrap , seemingly seamless.

i have seen a lot of players say they prefer the leather because they like the grip it gives. they feel linen slips a little in thier hands. i am a heavy guy (read that as fat) and sweat quite a bit. therefore i don't like the leather as much and prefer linen. i will say this, the leather wraps when made and done correctly are beautiful. gil castillo posts here and does some of the most amazing work i have seen. i am also lucky enough to have steve lomax who also posts here in my area and he does asuperior job installing leather wraps.
my advice would be to shoot with a cue wraped in leather before you pull the trigger because they are not cheap to buy or install. if you decide to get one make sure the person doing the work knows what he is doing. when done incorrectly you can have really bad seams and it will look and feel terrible. when done properly it can be a great addition to a cue that will also add to resale value.

Wrap . . .

I'd do the leather thing - very durable, stays cleaner, it's easier to clean, and improves the look and value of a cue.

Steve Lomax is great, and so is Jim Lee. I just had him do my son's cue and it turned out great. The price was unbeatable! Suggest you give him a call or PM.

I like the feel of leather but after a while I could feel the seem. Sometimes when I'm about to shoot, I have to stand up, rotate the cue in my hand a bit, then reset ... as it bugs me. Was thinking maybe stacked leather would suit me better as I wouldn't feel the seem running the length of the cue.

My two high-end cues include a leather wrap and an Irish linen. Both have identical tips. I'm pretty sure I couldn't tell the difference if I was blindfolded. Both are identical weight, and each hits almost exactly the same.

Let it be noted that my hands are calloused from years of manual labor.

Irish Linen or Elephant Ear, both will get me.

Wrapless cues are pretty popular too. I use a "stack" leather wrap, which is a tightly wound, burnished and sealed leather wrap by Tiger. They feel like a cross between wrapless and leather - they're the best for me.

I like stack leather the best

love the replies

Thanks all.

It's like hot sauce ... all about perception and preference. I think I might be leaning toward stacked leather at this point. I like the feel of my wrapless Zac cue, but prefer the hit of the kingwood Capone.

Myself, I always have felt that leather wraps seem too slippery to me... I'm pretty sure it's just a perception thing, but, as someone once told me "perception is reality"...

I like linen wraps most followed by wrapless...

Linen is my favorite.

I often have black linen on cues, tightly pressed.

I have a Southwest with leather wrap, and it was done perfectly, but I wish it was linen, and leather probably costs more....

I REALLY dont like wrapless cues.

My choices

I have a smooth kangaroo leather wrap which is a classic cue from JW(BS). I'll take leather, then wrapless, then Irish. I have never had cork or courtland so I can not comment on those. JMHO

I'm a fan stack leather also. I haven't had the chance to put my hands on the elephant and some of the others but the stack leather great!

I love the look of a leather wrap on a cue but don't care for the feel.
I know there is different textures and most likely just in my head.
I've tried a couple.

Stack leather is a different animal. I have the leather and tools needed. Tiger DVD too, haven't attempted one yet. Just have to figure out which cue is going to get the stack. I've tried the stack and like the feel and look.

Over all, I prefer linen. It can be a bit on the rough side or can be made to feel like a wrapless. Black linen pressed hard looks and feels very nice.

If you like leather, by all means, Do it, Do it. Done in my Ben Stiller, Starsky voice.
