Is anyone paying attention?

No one is bending anybody's arm to participate in any discussions on AZ. Add to the fact that it is free, why would anyone have any basis for complaints.

That is absolutely correct. BUT I see quite a bit of bad information and advice on here. In fact, I believe there is more bad advice than good. When it gets pointed out by someone with more experience, that person gets labeled as an arrogant know-it-all. In doing so, experienced cue makers are not posting because it is not worth the headache. Thus, more bad information is left unchallenged.

I'm all for friendly debate. I ask some questions just to get a different perspective. It just gets old when I see good intentions get flamed.

I don't believe that is the one Mike is talking about. There are two different forums that I know of, maybe more. On one the moderator takes care of it and let's in who he wants by invitation. The other one, members who believe someone can make a difference are nominated and if all agree he is given an invitation. I believe on both forums most, if not all members make their living building cues. There are no novices on either group and all know how to build a cue. Neither forum is for training cue makers. There are no easy questions asked nor answered on either forum. There are never any arguments as everyone knows that who ever responds to the question is knowledgeable and is not just giving a unsubstantiated opinion. There are, by the way, a couple of better known cue makers on those forums, who, as far as I know of, have never participated on this forum. As far as Jimbo, I don't believe he has anything to do with either forum as he is not a member of either.

No pinball, no bar, no bowling alley, this is Ames, mister. Except for this is no BS, no bickering, no sales, this is Jim's, mister.

Hi,

Can you give a few objective examples of the bad information & advice posted on "Ask the Cue Maker"? No need to name names, just describe examples of the content of some the bad stuff you have seen. Frankly I don't see it myself on any type of scale challenging good info or good advise vs. bad.

Remember there is a big difference between information, advice and someone's opinion.

Everyone who reads posts can process information and make judgements as they see fit. That is what open forums are all about.

Going underground with a secret forum sounds very boring to me. However, it might be more attractive if they provide you with a secret decoder ring.:winknudge:

I see a lot, especially when it comes to Meucci cues but that is neither here nor there.

Just because someone can read and process a post does not necessarily mean they make the best decision. I make my posts based on my years of experience. I've failed in many ways in order to find what works but more importantly, does not work. I usually do not get directly challenged for my posts but I see people with far less experience suggest a process after my post where I know it is going to fail. I truly believe they got lucky once or they are talking out of their ass. Who am I to challenge it or point out, in front of everybody, the error?

Spray car finish while hanging the cue on a string.
WD40 as sealer.

Repairs Only

I have made two cues in the 10 years I've been doing cue repair. In no way do I consider myself a cue maker. I only make repairs. Just in case you guys all go to a private site where I can no longer learn, nor get advice from you. I want to give you all a proper, and well deserved thanks for the valuable information served up! I have very much enjoyed trying new methods learned from this site! I feel this site has improved my process. Special thanks to Dick, Chris H, KJ, Brent, Ratcues, and Joey in Cali. I have saved the info you gave me, cause it was just too important to forget. A lot of good points have been made in this thread. I can't imagine how frustrating it is for you guys when someone that doesn't know a forearm from a ferrule wants to argue cue building methods with you. I can easily see how a private site would be better for you guys to share ideas. I don't know what the answer is. I just wanted y'all to know how much I appreciated all the help... Mikey:thumbup:

Hi Mikey
No one is really leaving, But the Private forum has one great advantage and it's not used all the time. It's a place just for those of us that have been invited, to talk about certain things that don't need to be talked about in the public eye. If we want to vent, we vent, not everything we talk about is public business. It's Private and anything we talk about stays there. But that place has absolutely nothing to do with us trying to help those who ask for it here. Most of us enjoy being members of AZ Billiards and if we complain about something, It's because we care about the conditions here, And above everything else, CUE MAKING. Nothing else. Some people come here with legitimate problems and questions. Some do not. Some give B.S. answers while hiding behind their little CB handle for a name. Personally that part, I don't get, If your proud to work on or build cues, Use your name, so you are held accountable for your answers. If your wrong about something, so what, we all are at times, If you don't know the answers to the question asked, Don't post. What's the big deal. This section is about helping and learning,

For The Record

I have no intent nor desire to leave this site and I really don't have the time to participate in a third site. I say 'third' site because of my relationship with Seyberts. I've been a 'mod' on their site for several years now and just don't have the time to involve myself in anything further. Granted, we don't get the action over there that this site gets but I still have duties to perform and they can be time consuming.

I came to AZB to share some of what I know about cues. I enjoy writing and I enjoy helping new builders, so AZB is a 'good-fit' for me. I'm also grateful for the opportunities that AZB has provided me. ROCK-ON AZB.

We have some GREAT posters here, not the least of which is the honorable Mike Webb. A lot of our responders have considerable knowledge and have shown a great willingness to share. This is very admirable because no one is being paid for their professional advice.
It's been suggested that most of the 'top builders' don't post here anymore. That may well be and I have my own theories as to why that is but it should be pointed-out that the 'top builders' of tomorrow are posting here right now, every day.

While I've got the floor, I'd also like to state that just because you own a cue (or two), doesn't make you qualified to respond to a person's cue related problems. I agree wholeheartedly with what's already been stated, that you're likely to do more harm than good. The bad intel and misinformation just drives me nuts. This leaves the person that asked the question in a difficult position; who to believe. Topic for another thread.

I truly appreciate the opportunity to be here and to offer assistance when I can. The game has been very good to me and I don't mind in the least, paying my dues everyday. To my fellow CMs, you have my respect.

Thank you KJ, I feel I'm in good company along with yourself, Ryan, and Dave Barenbrugge.

For KJ

I always enjoy your writing style when you answer problem questions. Many times you have been there first to answer and I say to myself "That's what I would have said". I don't believe I put things as clearly though and am trying desperately to learn. Keep on postin' and I'll keep on readin'.
Some day I might even learn the secret handshake to the other forum. There are some fine builders out there. I'm trying to pay my dues.
