This happened to me after league a couple months ago. We had a few beers like any normal league night and were hitting them around on the bar tables. Our bar owner sometimes opens the tables for the regulars as was the case on this particular night. Ok, here is how it went down. One of the girls on our league, who also likes to gamble, wants to bet me that she can break and run a rack of nine ball for $5. She is probably a C player and does not break and run very often, so being a nice guy, I told her to keep her money in her purse. She was persistant and seriously asked again, she said "I will bet $5 I can break and run". Ok, I'm not that nice, so I said, your on for $5. So I rack em up being sure to give her an honest, tight rack. She gets her break cue and takes a few warm up strokes and kerplow!!!! Breaks em hard!!!! Then........beleive it or not, she runs around the table......literally, runs around the table. :eek: After running she comes over and says "pay up". I'm like what? You just broke em! She says " I bet I could break and run". And folks that is what she did, she broke and ran around the table. At this point I turn and look at my teammate and he just gives me that look that says it all. Duh, I got scammed good. I busted out laughing and had to pay her $5. Until the day I die I will never forget the day I got hustled on this stupid bet.
This is just one of many things that happen in the pool hall. I wanted to share a lil story and maybe give people a good laugh. Yes folks, there is a sucker born every minute, and for that particular minute it was me.:scratchhead:

I was playing a set of nine ball with a customer that gets on everyones nerves in the room, but I decided to play him for $100.00 for 1 set just so he would stop bothering everyone. I was playing well and was on the hill 6 to 2 and he missed the 8 ball and the 9 was hanging in the corner pocket. I made the 8 ball and was lining up on the easy 9 ball and he started talking smack how I was lucky, im getting all the rolls, this is my poolroom and I play on the tables all the time, so I told him I would hit 6 rails and then make the 9 in the corner pocket, well some of the regulars were snickering because they knew what was gonna happen, he said ill take that bet double or nothing, I then explained the shot again, that I would hit 6 rails with the cue ball then make the 9 ball in the corner pocket. he said your on, knowing who I was playing I told him to show me the money, and we gave it to another player to hold. He then said come on hotshot lets do this, So I picked up the cue ball, walked around the table hitting 6 rails with the cue ball then shot the 9 in the corner, everyone was laughing, well almost everyone, I collected my $200. and walked behind the bar and proceeded to give everyone a round of drinks. He still comes into my poolroom, but now he doesnt bark as loud. I take it lesson learned.
 
I love these goofy things that go on in a pool hall. It really makes me sit back and laugh.:thumbup: You played him good though.
 
well...you couldve played her game into more detail and said..."You broke the balls and THEN ran instead of breaking the balls AND running at the same time"...cuz it'd be pretty hard to break and run at the same time without having to come to a stop...but seeing that hustle was quite worth it....
 
I heard about this hustle. Didn't see it but heard about it and who knows it may be true because strange and weird things happen.

A guy was on the table banging some balls around in a bar waiting for some action. A fairly intoxicated man sitting at the bar was watching him. He staggered over to to the player and slurred "I will shoot you for ten dollars. The player thinking he had a sucker agreed. The guy pulled out a gun, shot him and then demanded the money. :banghead:
 
Most of you people have probably seen this one but along time ago I was shooting at a now out of business pool hall called the Velvet Rail on Tenison street in Denver. I was a decent shot for a 19 year old and had been playing a stronger player for fun. After awhile he wanted to put money on our games and I declined knowing I would be giving it to him. He kept trying to bet me on different trick shots and I declined these also. Finally he layed three house cues across the table they were suspended off the cloth on the rails. One he put on the foot string one on the head string and one from side pocket to side pocket. He then bet me five bucks he could shoot the cue ball under these sticks with out hitting them. I couldn't get the five bucks out fast enough, I new there wasn't room under the cues for the ball to pass. I gave him the finn and he put the cue ball on the floor and shot it under the table to the other side:shocked2: Needles to say I have made my five back several times in the last 30 years with the same trick.:o
 
I`ve done this a few times myself & it works quite well. Put an object ball in front of every pocket & the cueball in the middle of the table. Bet someone that they can not make every ball on the table with out scratching.
Doesn`t matter how many times they shoot at the balls either just as long as they don`t scratch. Wants they shoot all the object balls in and the cueball is left they have to shoot the cueball in a pocket & you guessed it thats a scratch. Hope this wins someone a beer or atleast a couple of bucks.

Before you do this make sure that there is a clear path under the table. Some tables may have solid legs across the ends.

The other is to take the bet and then slide a cue stick or your case under the table just before they shoot the CB.:ok:
 
A little trick I've made a few bucks on... I walk into a bar with a book of matches, pull a match out of the book and hold it about a foot and a half over the table and drop it on the tabletop. I do this a few times until I get an interested party.

When someone wonders what you're doing, you say that you bet them that you can drop the match and have it land on it's edge. You drop the match a couple more times (and it never lands on it's edge). Then you bet the person that you can throw the match up in the air and have it land on it's edge at least two out of three times. When they agree, you simply bend the match into a "V" and throw it onto the table. Now, it will almost always land on the edge.

you should have told her, "but you broke then ran, the bet was if you could break AND run -- both at the same time, right?" that's what the wording infers anyway (eg can you walk AND chew gum etc), if she wants to play on words hit he up for that next time, do it for a drink.

Well, other than th gunshot reponse, I think these are quite harmless. Looking for more goofy pool hall stuff, keep em coming.:thumbup:
 
There was a movie called the "Grifters" The star is a low class con artist.

He goes into a bar and gives a prop to a guy sitting at the bar. He tells the guy that he will give him a dime for every quarter that he can stack up. The guy stacks up about 40 or so. The con artists counts them. Gives him a dime for each one and then puts all of the quarters in his pocket.

There are a lot of good bar bets in that movie, don't remember them all because I know that you would need some big ones to do them.

The thing about seeing them is you learn not to be a sucker. When someone makes a off the wall prop you know that there is a hidden catch.

John Cusack is the star, great film. He also gets a baseball bat in the gut trying to pull a cheap con, can be dangerous.
 
8-Ball hustle

Playing 8-Ball. You break and make a ball, then declare to your opponent that you are willing to bet $5 or whatever. The bet is that he won't get another shot. Hint: 8-Ball can easily be made. Only do this with friends, believe me! :eek::eek:
 
Always my favorite: 'I can drink 2 beers before you drink 2 shots. Only catch is, You can't start until I set my first beer down, and I can't touch your glasses, you can't touch mine.'

for the dense: upend your empty glass, blocking the sucker from one of their shots. grab the cash while drinking the second beer as slowly as you like.
 
Cuebuddy...Wasn't that the 24 hr place that was just off I-25, on the way to Northglenn (maybe around 56th N)? I used to play in there, in the mid-70's, bettin' with guys like Isadore.
