Obviously there are tons of different religions, but when talking to my priest about gambling everything is ok. Heck he does it (on blackjack) When you take that kind of an oath to not have a wife, and be God's servant, you are allowed some leeway. I think Tommy is Baptist, but not 100% sure.

I gamble now, nowhere near where I used to. I play small sets and with the exception of getting a bit angry and offering to stake Brian G against Shannon from Cincinnati for a bit of money, I usually stay at the smaller stakes.

LOL

Gambling = Religion?

Catholics have bingo, casino nights, etc. I often see 50/50.

Like all things, INCLUDING, religion, moderation is the key.

Do you want to stake Brian G against Shannon playing rotation pool (9 or 10ball) or banks? I hear Shannon will be at Brickyard this weekend so maybe you will get your chance if Brian will play.

Having multiple partners on the road is safer too. If you are going to a spot and know that you are going to be able to bet a large number, it is a good idea.

Good point! When I used to go in bars looking for games (long, long ago) I would hang at the bar and make friends with the biggest/baddest guy in the place. If he had a bike (motorcycle) I would talk to him about that. If he had a cool car, that would be our topic of conversation. Just chat with him, buy him drinks and generally BS with him. Then I might tell him I'm looking for a pool game with someone. Usually he knew who to play and would help me hook up. No matter, I now had a very important "friend" in the bar. Just in case.

Never hurt to be careful. There is one story in Pool Wars about such a situation where the bar tender, who was my friend, got me out of a jam when I was beating on a local favorite. He was side betting on me too, much more than I was.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Jay. I understand your feelings. I have some too.

I respect that and thank you for hearing what I had to say. I KNOW Keith is in the best place possible for him right now. With you! And you know how much I'd like to get Keith out of retirement for my latest pool project. He will always be a "star" in the pool world.

The biggest "draws" for pool matches I've seen in my lifetime have been Ronnie, Keith, Jeanette, Efren, Earl and Alex. These are the people that always filled the seats. Sigel, Buddy and Parica would be next on the list, behind those five.

Wu, Yang and Orcollo pack them in overseas in Asia.

I believe the Puerto Rican guy she played first matched up with Breedlove and got drilled, so he probably thought his wife could play him some. They clocked him wrong. He robbed her even the first night for about 10 dimes,(she was getting staked) final score like 16-6. Then they matched up again today for about 15 thou playing 11 ahead but when JL wins a rack she breaks 9 ball, when the guy wins a rack he breaks 10 ball. It took a little longer but the guy got the cheese in about 7 hours. Yeah, it was free money .

Was this the match on maybe Saturday afternoon or evening over near the Black Widow booth downstairs on that 9' Diamond?

If so, I watched a few racks of that. It took me that long to realize that this guy was in a totally different league than JL. With all due respect to her, I couldn't see how she had a prayer of winning. The guy got out beautifully, and looked like he could go head to head with about anyone. It comes as no suprise to me whatsoever that he won.

Yes in a strange bar I use to find the biggest regular in the joint and make friends with him the same way you did. Nine times out of ten if it hit the fan after I beat someone he would at least see that I got out with the money unharmed. Johnnyt

You are probably right on the backer/partner situation. In the first session I saw one guy controlling the $, raising the bet considerably when it got even, racking the balls for her, studying the racks of her opponent, etc. so I assumed she was getting staked by him. But, the 2nd session, it looked like she was betting her own for sure. Sorry for the miss info.
I play a little myself and definitely understand the difference between backer and partners. I'm from New York, the home of corporation betting.[/QUOTE]

When all the cash was received from the guy that was holding the bet there was a large distribution made immediately to surrounding people hundreds were handed out everywhere:eek:, so now I understand how a betting corporation works!
thanks

I'm pretty sure the original quote was regarding the match sunday morning/afternoon. i was the person manning the JL/PoolTees booth. I got down there at about 10am and the match was already going on. It started at 11 ahead, then they changed it in the course of the match to 7 ahead. JL was off her game. she missed a lot of shots she would normally make and it cost her. I don't think that guy she played was necessarily a better player. On this day he was but not in general. But then again, I'm not exactly "in the know" when it comes to this stuff. I just happened to be lucky enough to have a box seat for her match.

Sounds like we traveled in the same circles Johnny, except you were on the East Coast and I was out West.

I'd stop what ever I was doing if Keith was playing Jimmy Mataya!

What if Mark Strain wanted to play you races to 7 for 2k, and Kieth was playing at another poolroom in the same town? Got you thinking now hugh...LOL:grin-square:

Id have time to go watch a few games while Mark was at the table and still be back to the table before the balls quit rolling
