Job help for Mike Davis: A top USA pro Leaving the pro tour

In general, it seems that people in public sector jobs are better off these days than those in the private sector; I'm not sure how much age is a factor to start looking into jobs such as law enforcement, fireman, or just any public serving job; if I was really desperate for a salary, I would re-enlist in the military primarily to get some education in something like electronics. Again, I don't know how much the age factor limits one to these possibilities. I saw Mike Davis play in one of the West Coast tournaments recently, and I think he is a good person and I wish him good luck in finding a good job.

I can only speak for my geographic area, but this has not been the case here. The police and fire departments have been seeing major cutbacks, layoffs, and the little hiring that has happened had strong competition and huge applicant numbers. Other public departments have seen even worse.

Age can be a factor in any job, but these jobs seem to hire people with histories of good decision making abilities and good backgrounds. If Mike is 40, that is not old enough for most places to look at age as a negative.

Lots of people have mentioned enrolling in educational courses, which is never a bad idea, but I know a ton of people who had to take out student loans and are worse off now than if they had just taken an entry level position somewhere and worked their way up.

Depends a lot on how good the school is and of course the person. Johnnyt

I was in my late 40's when I went and got my GED to get into nursing school to become a LPN. Before that I did a number of things. Auto and marine mechanic, machine shop owner, gas station owner with repairs and used cars, owned a poolroom, and some other not so legal things. I enjoyed all of these but the part about regular hours. I wanted to play pool, go to horse and dog tracks, and party when I wanted to.

It cost me about $800 for 1 year of school and books. I graduated 2nd in my class, (an EMT was 1st) and had a job at a big hospital before I left school. After I knew what I was doing I worked for a nursing agent and worked where and when I wanted at from $18 to $24 an hour. If I could do this just about anyone can do it. Just like winning money in pool...you have to want it. Johnnyt

North Dakota and the oil fields up there! Go get 'em Mike. You're perfect for these jobs, a big rugged guy who gets along well with people. If you can stand the long cold Winters you'll be fine. Just tell them Jay sent you!

you buying oil fields up these days Jay, we all know you own half the oil in Texas and word is control OPEC. Hope all that works out for you, black gold is the best gold.:wink::wink:

You're welcome. Will you guarantee sales will go up? If so then you pay his salary and I will pay you out of the extra sales.

Sounds good , Since he currently is not getting paid from his current employer Maybe he will consider the move to China considering the wage scale there this will be a lateral move so it won't cost much more than coffee money to me ,it's win win

New benefit for military veterans -- VOW / VRAP

I agree with the post, below. There is a wide cross section of ppl on AZB, from many different industries. If we had a better idea of what Mike would like to do, then it would be easier to line something up for him.

Mike is, without a doubt, one of the good guys in Pool. I always enjoy running into him and chatting. I don't think I've ever heard a bad word about Mike and I'll miss seeing him at various Pool tournaments.

Eric

I agree as well. His buddies at D.P. foisting his name out there aside, not knowing what *Mike* wants to do is kinda the old "throwing spaghetti up against the wall to see what sticks" game.

Interesting time for Mike, as a veteran, too. I recently refi'ed to a VA Loan, and I'm on a mailing list of benefits. Something interesting arrived in the postal mail, and it describes a new benefit that Mike might be able to take advantage of.

To wit:

*** New Benefit Alert ***
If you know an unemployed Veteran age 35-60, the new VOW to Hire Heroes Act of 2011 may help. Included in this new law is the Veterans Retraining Assistance Program (VRAP). VRAP offers up to 12 months of training assistance to unemployed Veterans. Please visit http://benefits.va.gov/vow/ or call 1-888-442-4551 (1-888-GI BILL1) for more information on the new program.

I'll forward this same information on to Mike directly. And I hope anyone out there reading anonymously who is a veteran that is interested in this benefit takes advantage of the new program.

nursing schools in Cali all have waiting lists, its not always as easy as it sounds.

Since you wanted to put Mike into sales that carries a salary plus commission. You pay the base salary of $3000 USD per month and when enough sales are made to cover it I will reimburse you.

He said he would go where the job is and I would assume where the school with no waiting is. Not everything is in Cal. There are 49 other states most are not broke. Johnnyt

He should do what so many others who voluntarily joined the military do. Claim PTSD, get disability and ride the gravy train forever. Unfortunately at his age he probably missed out on any wars to get him started.

Very funny, JC! :)

Actually, there are also "many" (to use your word) of Mike's age who volunteered for service, who actually DID see action (conflict) while serving, who did not claim PTSD, who are not disabled or claim disability, and who actually have this military training and experience to thank for his/her career. I'm one of those.

Sure, there are examples of bottom feeders no matter where you look. All you can do in life is call them out when you see 'em, and then pay them no more mind going forward. I'm a firm believer that karma is a b*tch, and it will catch up with them.

Police is a job. There are jobs out there, just depends on what you want to do.

Good luck.

Go to one of the training places to get CDL's and be a truck driver. If you get CDL's you can pick the state you want to live and have your pick of many driving jobs. Many companies are offering up to 8,000 sign up bonus.

I always thought a long haul job would be ideal to combine with a life of pool for a single guy. Park your truck, grab a cab and go to work using your own money.

I actually own half of several wells, many of which are currently non-productive. Fortunately a few came in so to speak and provide a small but steady source of income.

What pro tour is he leaving?

Thats a good question! lol if there WAS a pro tour he wouldn't be leaving. Good like Mike It's a shame guys like you can't get an opportunity to make a living playing the game you worked so hard at.

All kinds of work in the Dakota's and Wyoming. My friend saw they were paying almost $18/hr at Walmart in Wyoming.

Not much to do out there but the Gas industry is going strong and they don't have enough workers. That came from an article in the paper and my friend went online and verified there are plenty of jobs.

That would be a great place for a guy like him to get a fresh start
