John Schmidt - how do you rate his one-pocket game?

I am told all the time to shoot one-pocket the "old" way, but imo John is definitely not doing that. He is going his own way and "firing off at everything". But he succeeds, and it is fun to watch him when he fires those shots off.
John plays what I like to call the California style. I don't know if Jay would agree to that, but I do notice a trend of aggression over tick tack from some of the Calfornia top players.

EDIT: One example that comes to mind was one that he DIDN'T succeed with, against Danny. It was a spot-shot with ball in hand, with 2 balls close to Danny's pocket. Both needed 2 balls, and he tried to pocket the spotted ball and play position for one of the 2 balls close to Danny's pocket. John missed the spot-shot and lost the game since Danny made the 2 balls close to his pocket the next shot.

The commentators said that John should absolutely not shoot the spotshot there, but get rid of the ball closest to Danny's pocket.

I hope I wasn't the commentator. I'd hate to think anyone would dream that I knew what I was talking about.

Thanks for your inputs John. Very much appreciated!

Would be cool to see you in some other One-Pocket matches on for example TAR. I enjoy watching aggressive play, and you sure had a lot of it.

I have to admit that I was surprised when you won the DCC, undefeated too, but I had might not been if I knew more about one-pocket and results from previous tournaments like those you listed. I am pretty new to one-pocket and don't know my history :o

How do you rank yourself in one-pocket, in America and the world? You said you would play Scott with 9-7 + some others with that spot, and I think you are just talking down your own game by saying that hoping that one of those guys will chase the bait :)

But that leads me to another question. Of the top players today, who would you play even, and who would you give/get weight from, and what kind of weight would be fair to make it a close game?

I think it was the only time you said something that made sense, so in my book you are safe. You still don't know what you are talking about ;)

You did good in the booth together with Ken, btw.

Betting with Roy

Don't bet with Roy!! He has the uncanny ability of looking into the future and seeing the winner. :D I knew he looked overly confident picking John in the final match. Just for the record, given your psychic ablility I will need 2 to 1 on the money for all future bets. It was nice meeting you at the Derby. I'll look forward to next year.

LOL

I knew you were smart and I am not surprised that you figured out how I manage to win bets, but it was not nice of you to tell the public... If I can't get more AZ-bets in the next couple of months, I will blame you. It's a whole lot of money that might just slipped out of my hands here!

My lawyer will contact you

i like JS's 1P game, I like him too but I wont be biased about this. I carefully watched one of his matches against Harriaman and he got out moved, he won with fire power and determination. I know it went hill/hill i think its the match he won. Moving didnt get him the win or 9 what ever the case was, it was heart and fire power.

I was 4 feet from scott at the finals of the Derby this year when scott was up a game, John had him in a bit of a trap, and all of a sudden. Scott muttered "I gotta go", I'm the only one who heard it, I was sitting with Samm Diep and said "Did you hear that?" she said "what???" Scott then said it again loud enough for her to hear. We looked at each other in amazment, the balls were favoring JS who Broke I believe. Scott was in a bit of a trap for sure but "Going" was a loss for sure, he did JS went 8 and out. After that Scott broke down mentally, funny thing is John didnt look to happy at the beginning of the match even though he hadnt used a re-buy, Scott looked pumped, he made a error in judgment that cost him the championship. Scott is my friend too I really like him, he came out great and for no reason that I could see took a flier of a shot, he missed it close too, after that in the last game Scott cut in a real thin ball and somehow went through the stack 2 times without hitting a ball and scratched(a horrible roll) John went 8 and out or something like that. John turned his emotions in that match from negitative to positive as it went on-he found a way to win. They are both friends, but on this one I was pulling for scott, John's will to win and fire power got him there, he did move good and put scott in some traps, but moving aint his strong suit(yet), hell if he moved like Harriman then he would be 2 balls better than he is now.

Back to JS, he is an amazing person, has a will to win and finds a way to win. 1P aint his best game, (an unqualified as I am to say this I will anyways) he over looks lots of shots, or dosent even look at all the balls on the table before he picks his shot, So that right there will stop him from beaing one of the greatest 1P players ever, but he is still a Champioj 1P player because of his fire power, and will to win. Who knows in a few more years he will remember to look at all the balls before he shoots(hint hint).

You sure do ask a lot of questions Roy. You writing a book or something?

you know im going to tell a little secret.
this is the list of players ive played 1hole with for medium to large money.

im not going to say how i played them or how we turned out .

thing is when it looks like im overlooking shots it might be because ive played so many great players that i can decide what to do quickly from past experience.

world class chess players play 100mph , not because they overlook but because they have seen it all so many times they know what to do immediately. just something to think about.

anyway heres the list ,and believe me just about everything i know ive learned from playing these guys.
efren,parica,cliff,jeremy,tony,marco marquez,santos,ronnie allen,tang hoa,mckready,fusco,gabe,harriman,richeson,ike,cooney,frost,
im sure im forgetting many.

then there the list of guys who i either heisted even, spotted and heisted or begged to play and they wouldnt get up.

im not going to name names but people who on paper seemed like the favorite as a group checked up about 100,000 short.

anyway thing is with some pro players its safer to assume they can play any game on a pooltable then to assume they cant just because you were not there to see it.

dont get me wrong im not saying im the greatest mover im just saying ive seen more and played more onehole then let on.

take care im going golfing today then dirtbiking tommorrow.
its a rough life but hey someones gotta do it.

I agree with most of the post about John's one pocket game. But what people don't realize is that John has made 90% of his money on the road playing one pocket. He's just not known for his one hole because of his straight pool feats and he doesn't play in alot of one pocket tournaments. I have watched John play the one pocket ghost and it is scary the way he moves the cue ball around. I don't know what he would be rated but he's a threat to beat anyone on any givin day imo. He even admits that Scott moves better but his defense isn't bad I can tell you that. His offense might be his best defense but he can move with the best of them. I am sure his straight pool practice has contributed to his one pocket skills, especially his cue ball movement.

Just out of curiosity, I thought JS said he wouldn't be surprised if SF offered him 9-7? Did he actually say that he necessarily wants it? I would think he would take it, I just didn't think he came out and said that. Just wondering.

Be careful on the dirt bike man.

I know you have played those guys and you play great 1P, I firlmy believe your in the top 10 of active 1P players right now, you were before the Derby this year. Infact I believe you heve been a top 10 1P player for along time.

I just think that your will to win(mental game) and offensive game are bigger than your moving, please dont misunderstand me, you still move GREAT, your a top 10 guy remember?? there is no weak part of your 1P game, you came with some key banks playing Scott-I was there front row.

now that's solved, can I have 12-4?

with repect

eric

I just think when you get to the top like these guys are, there's not a big drop off between them. One mistake and it's really going to hurt. John's such a good player you can't count him out of anything IMHO.

It looks like he has already played most of the great 1p players for mid to big money. I will take the 8-1 odds he beat more than half of them:wink:
