I do think there's this weird pride thing going on with the 14.1 diehards. "Yeah I can't beat today's players at a rotation game, but 14.1 is the real game anyway." As IUTBR likes to say, it's just balls and a stick.

I think these high runs have more to do with psychology than knowledge. The two JS's have unlocked this portal in their brains that allows them to attempt these ridiculous runs. There's no reason to believe that other players could do the same. Someone like Filler has the ability in his arm, but he may not be challenged enough to do it. Putting a huge dollar prize out there as a carrot, cheapens the achievement in my book, while turning it into something psychologically different than what John Schmidt is doing. For him, this is nothing more than a personal mountain he must climb. I can't think of anything more laudable than that. I dare say there's not another player on the planet that can do exactly what he has! All the others have to be enticed to even try. Say what you want about John Schmidt, but the dude is a beast!
 
Lots of players have the ability to do this - Schmidt is far from the most talented shooter out there - but the Venn diagram combining pace of play, stubbornness, persistence, and 14.1 vision is small indeed.

Slow players are pretty much disqualified.
 
Pretty epic run by John. I'm happy for him and hope he gets the record back, and that he and Jason Shaw can trade few more times to keep us all entertained. :) Just curious, has anyone besides Jason Shaw beet John Schmidt's 626 since he broke Willie Mosconi's 526 record? Has anyone else beet Willie's 526?

need to make it more modern and maybe have something like 25 point games and play a set.
less boring.
short attention spans have changed how the world works.
 
Say what you want about John, but he’s a U.S Open champion and is at the top of the mountain of straight pool runners. I imagine those 5” pockets start to get smaller and smaller as your ball count gets higher, the pressure starts to creep in, and the mental fatigue from focusing over 3 hours starts to show. Those are some deep waters that not many top pros or straight pool world champions can reach. Much respect to him and Shaw.

Going frame by frame is often even more useful for things such as these. That allows you to go at whatever speed you want, easily stop wherever you want for as long as you desire, and you can easily advance it frame by frame both forwards and backwards back and forth while looking for something or trying to figure out what is happening on screen at that moment.

On a computer just use the space bar to pause the youtube video at the spot you want to look at in detail. Then use the period key to advance the video forward one frame at a time every time you hit the period key, allowing you full control of the speed. You can also advance the video backwards one frame at a time the same way by using the comma key, allowing you to go back and forth as needed as well.

A lack of incentive is the only thing that has ever kept lot of people from breaking the straight pool high run record since Mosconi's time all the way until now where that is still the case today. Lots of people have the capability to do it, they just don't have the incentive to make it worth it for them to put in the time and effort and the relentless fading of the bad rolls that would be required to do it.

If for example Elon Musk were to say (in some legally binding way) that he would pay one million dollars to every single person who could break 800 on video within a year on a table like what Schmidt or Shaw used, there would be at least several dozens who would be able to do it, including a handful of snooker players, and probably including a few players from various other cue sports as well.

And if Musk were to make that same offer of a million dollars for every player who could beat Mosconi's record on the type of table that Mosconi used within a year, there would be hundreds of players that could do it, including lots of snooker players and players from the other sports and I wouldn't be at all surprised if there weren't even some three cushion players in there. The records don't require near the player skill level that many think they do, but even for the very most skilled players it does still require a good bit of effort to accomplish it, and luck plays an oversized part in things that has to be faded as well.

Yeah and if my aunt had nuts she’d be my uncle.

A lack of incentive has kept people from doing lots of things in pool - especially in the US. If pool paid like golf, there would be a lot more open tournaments than fargo capped events, and way more guys switching cue sports and pushing themselves to go pro. There are many players in the mid-high 600s and 700s that have the “ability” to go pro, but for many reasons don’t pursue it. That doesn’t mean we should downplay the guys that did go pro. And we shouldn’t downplay Shaw and Schmidts run.

What pool player wouldn’t want to have a world record tied to their name? Mosconi’s run is the first thing mentioned before any of his other accomplishments.
