Great idea! Just keep it in your sight. There are a lot if really nice/expensive cues people play with - you just have to be careful!

Always a good conversation starter. I think you will bump into players unexpectedly playing with older, collectible custom cues. I just ran across a player with a unique custom Tad at a small bar. The cue was worth more than the entire bar!

I don't usually bring my JW into bars. Mainly I don't want to look too fancy. I usually just use an alternate sneaky pete that plays about the same as my cue.

If you own a cue and don't play with it doesn't make any sense to me.
If I owned a '68 Shelby GT500, that car would get driven, not stored.
The same applies to a original Gus cue or any other cue-maker. I am
a pool player first and foremost to my way of thinking and the cues I
happen to collect along the way are merely mementos of what I enjoy.
Owning a great pool cue and not playing with it is akin to heresy....JMO.

IMHO play the cue. :thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

I will say that I almost never take my old Joss into bars. I had an issue a long time ago with a guy I beat for $300. He grabbed the cue and was going to break it.

Use you judgement. If it's a rough bar you might want to not take the cue.

I have a 3x6 case and when I played in leagues I took my playing cue, break cue and a loaner cue because once in a while someone will see my cue and ask to borrow it. When that happens I pull out the cheap loaner cue.

I developed that strategy after I loaned my playing cue to a teammate once and after he missed a shot he slammed the cue against the side of the table. When I go to the mens room the playing cue goes with me. You really have to watch it. I've laid it down on the next table while I broke and had people pick it up.

Never let it out of your sight.

Mine goes to the rest room with me.

I'd guess your joss west is pretty fancy!

My cues all get played, nothing super expensive, just playing cues. Right now the most expensive cue I have, a james white, is what I'm playing with. I believe cues should be played, and while there are some that are just art pieces, the ones that were made to be used should be.

The problem that I have with playing in a bar league with a nice cue is no one respects it. They will lay their cue against yours in your cue holder. Walk by and knock it over. One person even moved my cue out of my holder to put his in. People will push chairs into them when in the holder and etc.

Some tables have sharp edges that could gouge the cue when stroking especially those metal corners on the Valleys.

Many bars crowd the table with juke boxes, arcade games, change machines and etc that you will bump into when lining up or stroking.

The other way to feel about it is to use as you can always get it refinished for a few hundred dollars.

i have not read the replies
sorry about that
but my 2 cents
i understand play your cue dont keep it in a closet
and if you were playing in a respected pool room i would say yes
HOWEVER
i think you expose your cue to getting stolen/and bumped and dinged
in a bar league

Now just to keep things in perspective, if I am playing in a gin mill setting,
I am not bringing my best out to play. But one of my cues would nonetheless
get played whilst the others sit tucked away safely. In hindsight, I really regret
trading the 1 Joss West & 2 Josswest cues I've owned and would love to add
one but the pickings are really slim, plus I'm known to be fussy about cue specs.
In my opinion, great cues are meant to be played rather than just being adored.

I think maybe it depends on the type of places you play league. If they aren't rat holes, and you know everyone there I think it's fine as long as you keep a close eye on your cues at all times. Also, I think it's a very cool conversation piece. There is one guy in our league that plays with a Southwest. It's the only time I've ever got to hit with one and see one close up in a pool room setting.

Not taking your cue to the restroom can be dicey if it is an expensive cue or one you particularly like. If you leave it with your teammates and it gets damaged or stolen how are you going to feel about that happening when your buddies were right there? Will you blame them or feel like WTF? I feel it is my responsibility to take care of my property and don't want to relegate that responsibility to my teammates or anyone else for that matter. It's better to just carry it into the bathroom and not leave it behind, IMO. Too many thieves and knuckleheads in today's world for me to risk losing my property or friends over especially in a pool hall. JMO!

Actually I play with a simple 4 point cue. Nothing fancy, but I would hate
to lose it because I like the way it plays.

Unless one of my pals is watching the cue I am playing with, I am not leaving any of my cues
unattended. My case sits in the locker at Blue Fin or in Tommy's office if it is not with me. The
cue I remove to play with follows me wherever I go at the pool hall. None of my cues can ever
be replaced. Jerry is retired, Bob stopped using ivory last year, Mr. Scruggs has passed on, and
Ed Prewitt is a California cue-maker so there aren't any more ivory cues being made by him.

You protect what you own and protection is mostly vigilance on the part of a cue owner. So I am
very careful with my cues since they are very important to me. And in case you are curious, if
one of my pals is not around to watch my cue when I visit the head, then yes, the cue goes with me.
I am not about to leave a irreplaceable cue worth a pile of $ sitting on the pool table unobserved by
myself or my buddies. Doing that is just playing with fire & sooner or later you will surely get burned.
