Just an observation...

Yesterday was the 7th anniversary of the darkest day in our nation's history. I counted (both here and NPR) six threads calling for unity and observance of that event. All six threads combined, recieved approx. 20 replies, and only about 250 views, TOTAL.
By contrast, the last 6 threads of a ranting, delusionary, self-pomoting individual, garnered at least 2000 replies, and TEN'S of THOUSANDS of views, before most of them were mercifully shut down.
What does that say about us, both as a forum, and a nation ?
Is our attention span really that short? I have always been proud of our country, right or wrong, as I'd like to think most of us are. But are we becoming the silent minority ?
I realize gossip and bad news, will probably always outsell good news and common sense. But, Good God people, don't we have any better "bad news" to waste our time on ? Let's get back to trashing pool player's for dumping, doping, and "air barreling". At least we'd stay on topic.

Dick, I found myself skipping over these threads. I feel flooded with memories, memorial events here in town, the news is covering it constantly, and I got about 10 forwarded email about 9/11.....I'm as patriotic as anyone, but I come here to relax and see whats happening in the pool world.....and basically to forget the "real" world for a while.

A couple of years ago SJM would always repost his accoun t of 911 and it was really nice and well written.

All of a sudden some jerk from Denver came on and totally bashed hm for it and the subject has been pretty quiet here ever since. It was total BS from some Little Boy and I understand why SJM would not post it again, but I wish he would.

SJM's account wass a great peice of writing and set a great tone for memorable occasion.

Dick, I think you make a very valid point though. So many of these threads of shamless advertising and self promotion have me ready to puke.

I certainly find no fault with your take on it. I normally would feel the same way. I just get so frustrated with the "Wheat" crap. I see he's at it again !

I appreciate the sentiment of those threads but for me personally I don't need to be reminded of that day. I have thought about it plenty since that morning and I suspect I will for a long time. Regardless of what particular day it happens to be.

You do have a valid point about what this forum has seemed to value lately though. I actually just got involved in a thread with one of the primary offenders because I finally just could not take the stupidity anymore. Of course in the end I probably just added to the side show.

There is a number that I always associate with 9/11 and that is 343. Most know what it refers to. If someone doesn't, look it up and understand its significance.

lets just say that was just taken care of in GRAND fasion, it was a group effort, and the good guys prevailed, one down. then we can get back on track,

and yes Dick your first post here is 100% correct, I was in the air flying to Zimbabwe when 9-11 hit, i was there for a month and had no-media. nothing so by the time I got back it was over, I didnt really see the video's of it or much at all. So it never really hit me, however I do get seriously pissed everytime I see the new skyline.

Justin, Gerry, and Ironman,

I understand your viewpoint completely. It is a painful reminder of a day we'd all rather forget. But should we ?
I guess my rant on this thread was brought on by the fact that my computer took a crap on me yesterday, and I had my very good friend Charles M. (his tag) post a poem I wrote about 9/11. It is buried back on page 2 or 3 now. It's titled "September 11, Re-visited".
I am an amatuer song writer, but NO music came to me that day. But I am proud of the word's I put together in a poem, and I guess I was a little pissed it got so few looks. I'd post a link to it but I don't know how.
(Charles, can you fix the 1'st verse ? it's cut in half.)

These are my thoughts exactly. I come to a main pool forum to read about and discuss pool. I go the NPR forum (where this belongs) when I am looking for miscellaneous news, light hearted material, or deep and sad threads like this one.

2 hours ago it was terrible, i'm just getting in stroke, look at the eddie wheat thead at my posts-you wont be disappointed-i had every word wrong, i even got yelled at once. :smile: never fear its stone cold luck i spell somethinng right, honest to goodness 99% of the time it looks right to me, i cant tell if i have it right or wrong. its a learning disability for sure the older i get the more i notice it.
 
I don't think you should read too much into the numbers. I did not read or post in any of the rememberance threads, but that certainly does not mean that I do not remember and mourn that day and wonder about business associates I used to call on in the WTC.

9/11 was like a death in the family for the USA. It takes a long time to recover. And we have not fully recovered yet. It still hurts to see those buildings falling. It opens up all the old wounds.

Most of my family is from New York, and they still don't like to talk about that day.

I agree with your statement.

And the only other thing that pisses me off about another anniversary is pointing out that we are STILL at war. 7 years and still at it. How long do we have to spend billions and many lifes to find a needle in a haystack.
 
Just because people don't respond to a thread about 9/11 on a billiards forum doesn't mean everybody has forgotten. It was one of the strangest days of my life, and that includes my time in Vietnam. I was in some intense training for my job where I was clearing buildings and people were shooting at me with plastic bullets which hurt like hell and raise a nice welt on you if they hit you, all of it on only a couple hours of sleep. Then they pulled us out of that environment and showed us a tv with the wtc buildings on fire after a couple of planes had collided with them. Me and my buddies thought it was part of our training at first, we didn't think it was real. Eventually they stopped the training and we loaded our guns with live ammo and went to guard a building.

If somebody starts a thread about the war I might not respond but trust me I remember it and some of it I wish I could forget. It is a mistake in my opinion to stop enjoying your life and focus too much on the negative. Part of the healing process is to remember but move on with your life.
