Lies about Derby City

The last couple of weeks I have been subjected to a barrage of bullsh*t about DCC. A Chicago policeman, no less, was in the pool room the other night and told everybody that there would be no gambling at DCC. He said after the tournament matches the room would have to close and there would be no all-night pool. Not true! I had a long talk with Greg Sullivan and he assured me DCC would proceed just like it did every year. Plenty of action and little sleep. Insofar as "no gambling allowed," the only possible proviso regarding gambling is that anybody dumb enough to throw money on the table deserves to get arrested. That's like spitting in the Law's face. Keep the money out of sight and there will be no problem, even tho it's doubtful that any gaming commission people will even be hanging around. It's out of their venue. The Casino is their concern. I have a hunch that all this knocking of DCC is being done by creeps who are not going to go and are just trying to spoil everybody else's fun. I CAN'T WAIT! AND I WILL SEE Y'ALL THERE. I feel like Tiny Tim at Christmas.

Yep, that "no gambling" rumor has really made the rounds lately. Glad to see that you got the straight story from Greg. I'll look forward to seeing you at DCC.

What would a Chicago Cop know about the Gambling Laws in the State if Indiana? So what was your reply to the COP Freddy?

Freddy I'd give anything to see you tiptoe thru the tulips on your way to DCC!!!!
Have a great time you deserve a break from the snowy cold of Chitown, it's been a hell of a winter so far..

Me thinks the less said about this subject the better. The more people talk and write about the more chance of a problem. I understand that people at the top of the DCC want to get the word out that it will be the same as the old venue and to stiffle the rumors from non-gamblers and out and out trouble makers. I think the word is out now. Johnnyt

I've never been to DCC, but I've been to Valley Forge Expo almost every year. I am assuming they are similar...

In VF, there is the main money table, and a group of 100 people surrounding the table screaming side bets. This is for the normal 100 per game king of the hill format that anyone can put their name on a list to join.

When a game gets formed between two individuals, the crowd around their table is even bigger. The side bets are bigger. And the money is all counted out on the table and posted on the light during the negotiation phase.

Is this how DCC was in the past years? And is this the type of behavior that will now be frowned upon? I think that is still unclear from all the posts by those in the know.

Is side betting allowed period? If it is, how discreet does it have to be? Can no money be posted on the light? Can no group surround a table and make side bets amongst themselves, or with the players' backers?

These are the questions that are unclear to me. Maybe they will only be answered by being tested at the actual DCC. But all the posts so far have been vague to me as to exactly what is and what is not allowed.

The word is to be DISCREET with your gambling, meaning no money on the lights, no money thrown on the table, no yelling about bets, etc. Yes, you can make a side bet, just make it quietly without yelling across the room. You can also exchange money on the sidelines, but do so without fanfare.

Anybody who has gambled at pool knows what we're talking about here. Sometimes you just have to tone it down a little, and this is one of those times. Yes, it may be a little quieter this year, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. There are no "rules" to govern this type a thing. It is more a matter of using common sense.

Common snese is the key here. That can be a rarity at times though.

Someone just put a muzzle on Bucktooth and all shouldd be fine.

Some people just talk nonsense.

Freddy,
It is the same thing here. People are saying s**t that doesn't make sense. They have no knowledge of what is going to transpire and seemingly only want to accentuate or more correctly, create negative information. I don't know why they do it but they're doing it here. These harbingers of doom remind me of the news media.

Gambling at pool will be allowed at the DCC tournament this year and if people don't flaunt their gambling money in the face of the man, we won't have problems.

Use DISCRETION and we'll all pass a good time.

Exactly

I have been on the fringe's of society for too long for me to confront a cop, no matter what he's spouting. Did you want me to tell him he's wrong? Yeah, sure. I did wake up everybody else in the poolroom tho.

I don't know about the laws in Indiana.....

I HAVE been checking into the laws in California though, and even card games like poker are legal so long as there's no rake.

I was thinking about trying to open a pool hall/card table room where I rent the table time on both and let people make their own games. So I had to research it.

So long as there is no book and there is no rake, people can bet on their skill, ALL THEY WANT..

Atleast in California. I can provide the statutes if anyone is interested. but like I said, that is in California, I have no idea what the laws are in Indiana.

My motto is 'never talk back to a man what carries a gun'. Really doesn't matter if he wears a uniform on not.. if he's carryin then just shut the fuk up... then walk! Saved my butt a few times.

I hear what you're saying, but I'm pretty sure that interpretation of the law hasn't filtered down to the PO riding around answering calls. If he's going to see "gambling", I'm sure he'll slam dunk everyone he thinks is involved and let the ADA sort it out.

You might "win" eventually by not getting charged, but you still got hooked-up (may help with the street cred though, LOL) and spending time enjoying their company from behind some sort of cage for a few hours.

Here's how my luck goes. When I was about 20 a cop stopped me for loud glass packs. It was a chicken sh** ticket. I told him if he took his gun off and took his shirt off we could go in back of thr billboard and get it on. Well he did. I figured I'd been boxing at 130 lbs for a few years and and had a good record of 3-1, he only weighed about 150.

He used my body as the heavy bag and my head as the speed bag. When I finally went down I stayed there (a first for me). I found out much too late that he was the champ in 156 lbs in the police dept in the Northeast. Johnnyt

Johnny, you'll love the story about when I got busted for gambling with Jimmy Moore. The guy I was playing ($5 9-Ball) got mouthy with the cops also. It didn't end well for him either.

I think you should check further.

You are right about 2 people gambling on skill, however when it comes to allowing gambling on card games in a pool hall, you better think again. No matter how you attempt to circumvent the law if you make even a nickel as a direct result of the card game, you are illegal. Sell a coke, u lose, rent the table u lose, sell a beer, chips, candy you lose. They consider all of that profit to you. I have checked in this for the last 10 years trying to get on the poker bandwagon but there is no way around it. New license, forget it, they have a moratorium until at least 2015, recently raised from 2011. Be on Indian land, no problem. It is a joke.
