Little Motivation to Compete

I'm trying to think of professional player who was successful in pool business-wise. Can you think of any?

Larry Hubbart and Terry Bell, the two pro players who started the APA, are the names that jump off the page for me.

tap tap tap....

I had a guy doing that to me in a tournament even though he was kicking my butt. On the last rack, I got some chalk in my nose and sneezed on his hand that was on the rail. I didn't know a sneeze could win 2 games for me :). Over all I lost but was quite happy with myself :)

LOL......:) THAT is funny!

We can call that the NewStroke Snort Technique but will we have to use Perfect Aim with it?

Yeah, I think rack-for-each-other may be based on what is probably the biggest logic flaw in all of sports, that your opponent is going to bust his back to give you a good rack so that he can increase your chances of beating him. LOL. I feel like I must be taking crazy pills because apparently a huge segment of the pool world doesn't see this.

I personally prefer rack for eachother when playing tournaments. The problem with rack your own is too many people give themselves loose balls behind the nine for unethical reasons. Some people enjoy cheating by manipulating the rack and others don't pay any attention to the back balls. Also I hate it when I make a nine straight in the corner on my own rack. I would rather have to pay the price for being lazy when I rack then be rewarded.

If you start looking at the rack and paying attention to what balls are frozen or not you might notice some new things about racking. In my experience I would rather have a loose head ball then a loose back ball. If the 3 balls behind the nine are tight It is a better rack for everyone involved regardless of gaps on the topside. Of course all balls frozen is always better table willing.

At the of core this issue too, is the demographics/mindset of the broke-dick pool player....heck with the game, win at all costs and your around allot of other matters that can throw constant dysfunction into the arena. There have always been players that made sure you got a good fair rack, and in return they did the same. Like Randy Jones, Me, Gabby, Corey I'm sure, Matlock and many many more, but there are the 'others' that use this area of the sport to create something else. I've even given perfect racks before and my opponent still didn't like something and asked for a rerack, knowing he was actually trying to rack my brains. We're dealing with a game thats core is in the enviornment similar to poker, with cigarettes, alcohol, drugs, late nights in the bars etc. , it goes with the territory and is the hold-back for pool here in the states and assuridly other places. The arena that we're in Corey won't change, we have to change it. Maybe have players in the next round racking for players in the playing round mandatory, there's always a way around something that doesn't work quite right. When rack your own came about I'm sure it helped for awhile, now its changed and become something else, maybe have an amateur tournament before the big event giving all those who place in a certain position the job of racking for the players and next year you give them free entry into the event, something may come out of your RANT, something positive.

What is the solution to the racking problem?

If players rack for each other it turns into a racking marathon and with all the rack mechanics out there you can't just say rack your own and not let the opponent check because that will be manipulated.

I understand how you feel Corey. I play in the APA and I'm telling you I get sick and tired of racking tight racks for my opponent where the rack explodes and when I break their rack I'm lucky to get two balls past the side pocket. When you hit their mush rack and come up dry they act like I did something wrong. Its like giving up the breaks. When I play in the Open tournaments wheres it rack your own its amazing how much my break improves!

I like rack your own as long as the player isn't pattern racking. I don't pattern rack when I rack my own. Pattern racking to me is a form of cheating. It doesn't take a rock scientist to pattern rack just another level of awareness.

Just thinking out loud here...

How about a very thin diaphanous rubber band that goes around the rack, and breaks when the one ball is hit.

Ok, it's got problems, like how do you pick it up when one of the balls lands on it. Plus you would need a lot of them.

Continue brainstorming. Paging Mr. Bond. Charlie Bond.

How about eliminate the break altogether? Have some kind of chute load the balls into it and they roll onto the table in a random pattern everytime. The opponent would load the chute and operate it lol! But if a ball fell into a pocket it would get spotted? I don't know you would have to figure out all the particulars i guess.

I did not know that. Did they truly benefit financially in a big way? This is pretty cool if they did. I think anybody who can find their niche and make a living in something they have passion for is great.

I have always admired Allen Hopkins for what he has done, and his contributions to the sport are many.

I would like to know more about Larry Hubbart and Terry Bell; the aftermath of the APA creation, if you will. Is there a link to a story? Inquiring minds wanna know! :grin-square:

Jam,
Here is a link to the APA webpage:
http://www.poolplayers.com/executive_staff.html

It shows them listed as the founders and I presume they are the BOD for the league and are probably the largest of only a few stockholders. I imagine that they have done very well with the league and are multi-millionaires.

Didst thou forgetteth about ye olde Sardo?

The Sardo has its own issues...

I've played on a table that has been Sardo programmed. For one thing you don't even need a rack to get a tight rack you could do it with your hands. The balls just roll up and freeze if you get them close to the right location. The main issue with this is if you like to play games with clusters near the spot such as one pocket or straight pool. It can get quite annoying if everytime the ball rolls up to the stack it tends to freeze to something.

Follow the link in post #32.

Corey, it's easy....

Eliminate 9-ball, play 10-ball.....it's always rack your own....if you get caught deliberately racking loosely, you get walked immediately.....viola, no more issue....

You have really great ideas......big tourney races should be to at least 10.....weekend tourneys for bangers like me, race to 7.....weeknight tourney, race to 3.....
