Live (Barely) from the Derby

I posted this a couple of years ago, but it is worth repeating:

It was my first night in Louisville, and there was very mixed crowd in the action room (bar) and there was a much wolfing etc., and the three card monte dealer was giving it everything he had -- very deftly. From frat boy types to inner of inner city boyz, everyone was checking the others out. Eventually, someone says,
"I'll bet anything on a coin flip"
and all hell broke loose from all sides. A pair of young hustlers was pushing the bet hard. Finally, an older, lanky dude, seemingly from out west, says,
"Okay, I'm in for a $1,000.00."
One of the young guns says,
"Okay, but I get to call it in the air, and the flip lands on the floor."
The crowd parted, money posted, coin goes up, the call comes,
"Heads on the floor"
and the coin is down: tails up. The lanky guy attempts to collect, but the young guy stops him, saying,
"I won, I won -- heads is on the floor".
Eventually, the two young cats get paid, the crowd quiets some, more propositions exchanged, but a pall has been cast on the evening. Then, the lanky guy says slowly, very evenly,
"That was a stone cold hustle, and I want my money back"
and all hell breaks loose again
"I said heads on the floor, heads was on the floor . . ."
Then I hear something to the effect of, again slowly, very evenly,
"I don't know if you fellows mean to stay all week, but if you don't give me my money back, you best clear out now, because I am going to be here all week".
The young dude, somewhat chagrined, owns up and gives the money back. Now, all hell really breaks loose -- the quiet one of the pair is in his partner's face,
"You #$%&@(&, what are doing? We have waited years to make that . . ."
I never saw the two again after that night, but the tall cat was there for the rest of the week.
Now I'm starting to worry that we are getting Chatbox'd up in here. That reads like an AI hustler story. Very nice.

You explained it better than me:

I mean, it felt like a the center of the pool universe just happened to be at a cool older hotel for nine days. Now it feels like a casino that just happens to be having a pool tournament for nine days.

That’s dead nuts accurate!!!!💪💪

It feels like pool at a casino, which is better than nothing of course. But it doesn’t feel like ground zero for pool, and the milk drinkers are out in full force(vanilla people) I like character’s. You feel like you have to be on you best behavior because of security. Nobody woofing at anyone, it’s just not rough around the edges. I don’t have the right words again-but it just feels “like a casino with pool-not (pool)”.

Well.... There are still some "characters".... Robb Saez was being an absolute jerk to me, and accused me of "stealing his cigarettes", after I just poked my head in the action room. I thought someone said something to the side, and said "What, I thought you said something to me?" to another player, and Robb jumped in in and said "Yeah, I said something!!!", in a very belligerent, challenging manner (though I know 100% he did not...)

Wife came up, and said what's going on, and I said '"Nothing, just laughing at the foolishness.....", and then Robb tried to pick a fight with me, butI just walked away and ignored him.

Really not that difficult to see why that dude was banned from northeast tours for a few years. Generally, the other "characters" are a bit better behaved.

I was wondering where Scooter is this year.. He's the sort of dude that you love it when he talks crap to you.. :-D

Lots, that’s certain.

There was the corners truck here day before yesterday. We don’t know who died. Could have been another non-pool guest. But we did have one down this year……rip🙏🏼
I overheard someone talking about this. Some friend of the player I overheard had been offering fentanyl pills to the person telling the story, and he told him, "Nah, man.. I heard that stuff will kill you.."

Next thing he knew, his friend had went back to his room and taken a dose, and ended up dying in the room.

I spoke to his other half Tedder, but didn’t ask him where scooter is, Scooby isn’t here either

Tedder, Scooter, and Scooby, I love it. Reminds me of the early 70's when I got out of the service, and my high school friends i still hung out with, all had nicknames. Some would change though pretty fast depending what happened that weekend.
I don't mind getting old so much, but I really miss those days, we were so close and did everything together.
If you are younger than me, heck if you are my age, take the time and try to get ahold of an old friend you haven't kept in touch with to shoot the breeze a bit. You won't regret it.

how hard is it to drive or cab it to plenty of food places within ten miles of the casino. why on earth go there and eat food out of a can in your room.
It's not real hard. It is 20 minutes out and 20 minutes back. And, you have to have a car or pay for a taxi/Uber.

There are probably much better places for the tournament in Louisville, but I bet they cost a lot more.

I made it to the DCC at the EW because a very good friend pushed me so hard -- so very hard. He became a relentless pain on the subject. Finally, I agreed and drove to Louisville. I will never, ever, be able to repay him.

Despite my current issues with the present DCC, what I should be telling all of ya'll is you need to GO, even go this year if you can manage. You may never have the chance to experience such ever again. I sure never expected the EWDCC experience to disappear in the blink of an eye. But it did. So grab all you can while what is left of it is still there. There might be nothing left at all next year,

Yes, Virginia, they’ve shrunk the pockets.

All the pockets.

The balls are polished, the Simonis new, and the rails nice and springy. You will miss your banks on the short side and your position play on the long side. You will miss shots you are not accustumed to missing because there isn’t enough pocket where you think there should be pocket.

All the usual suspects are in attendance.

If I’m not mistaken the Action Room on the second floor is back —. get your tokens.

Lots of cues, cases, tshirts and pool gimcracks for sale. One cue mechanic is on duty.

The food situation is dire. Pizza joint and Mexican cantina closed. You have a choice of Vietnamese noodles, a grill, and the home style place. There’s a new Gordon Ramsey steakhouse but you can forget about getting in — it’s booked straight through March and the waiting list to sit at the bar is filled up at 445.

Won my first match, grinding out a 3-2 win. That is all for now.

Congratulations on starting with a win! The first match can really set the tone.

Reading the rest of the thread, I don't know what to say. Damned near every state has a gambling commission now and they protect organized gambling and organized crime. Absolutely stupid how hard they have their thumbs on my state, they even shut down church bingo!

Talking about the old days and the Executive West, a lot was better, a lot is receiving the golden glow of memory too. Doesn't matter, the move wasn't Diamond's choice or an option so end of story. Diamond has a long term contract where they are at, I forget the reasons or perhaps never heard. Doesn't matter, other than to say this is going to be the Derby for a few more years. For those that can, we will at least know to have fallback plans for food! I try to patronize the venue but there are things beyond ridiculous! I still remember a few food burns over the years.

Some fun stories, hopefully more to come from yesterday and today!
