LIVE Scoreboard at World 8ball Pool in Dubai

There's nothing special about Tuesdays in this region. For this tournament it's simply an off day.

As far as I know (I'm still flogging my guts out at work in Abu Dhabi cos my business partner is in hospital so I couldn't get up to Fujairah to play qualifiers or watch) those players who wish to go are being taken on a desert safari and there is a gala dinner in the evening.

This is certainly what was scheduled and planned for Tuesday 22nd in any case and have no reason to think that has changed.

Note for The One....you may be thinking of Thursday as Thursday/Friday used to be the weekend in Middle East. In most places it is now Friday/Saturday. The Middle East weekend has never been Saturday/Sunday and will always include a Friday as that is the Islamic equivalent of our Sunday:)

Yeah that was it, I knew there was something a miss, got my days mixed up! :)

PS
Did you see Beckhams ?800k palm island is supposedly now worth ?8m! Are these figures close to the mark or media BS?

(note: for some reason pund symbol gets changed to ?)

I didn't see that no.......but if Beckham purchased very early in the project figures of that magnitude are possible. I have a colleague who bought a unit 3 years into the project and about 1 year before the unit was completed. On completion it had appreciated about 45%. He promptly sold it only to watch it soar another 80% in the following year. However there are some technical problems in that development and if I had one and wasn't totally commited to living in it would probably sell it now.

Comparatively speaking Dubai actually has very little oil money or other income and their continued building boom is partly dependent upon underlying Abu Dhabi investment money not being withdrawn. Abu Dhabi's own similar building programme is still in its infancy but has started and may eventually dwarf Dubai's as they have all the money. That is the place to get in on the early levels of purchase. They build a little slower but the island based Formula 1 track with all its associated hotels apartments, golf courses etc is well under way as are three other island marina, apartment, villa, golf course projects and the first of many huge onshore beach and inland developments. They also get the fundamentals right, putting in the basics of all the road, electricity and water infrastructure first, thus hopefully avoiding the traffic nightmare that Dubai residents and visitors currently experience as a result of them doing much of it the other way round.

All perhaps a little too geographically close to Iran for the nervous minded......though I personally do not think there is a snowball's chance in hell of any significant coalition military engagement with Iran.

I love Dubai, I used to stop there every year for a few days when flying back from Asia/Oz. I remember sitting next to the guy in charge of the Burj Al Arab on one flight when I was fortunate to get upgraded to first class. He got my juices flowwing and although I'll probably never be rich enough to stay there I did go to the restuarant at the top and stay at Jumeirah Beach a few times.

I looked into moving there also when they were building the Internet City but it seems the influx of Indians has killed off the days of high paying tax free jobs for large numbers of expats?

I think Beckham bought it offplan around 2002, an amazing return of 1000% in 6/7 years. How is the underwater hotel, Burj Tower going?

I heard about the new F1 track/island in AD a few weeks ago and checked out the website. It does look pretty impressive, apparently it will be part of the F1 calendar next year!? I get various Dubai property Spam, and it does look like the finance options are getting better in recent years too.

Have you seen Ebdon practice in Dubai? I heard an Ozzie Snooker player was over there coaching a few years ago but forgot his name?

Got me confused as well now, a lot of apparent mix n match going on in the above there:)

The Burj al Arab Hotel is of course still operating, although it's already a bit 'old hat' and is way superceded in quality by other hotels in both Dubai and Abu Dhabi. In its early days you could in fact have got a room on certain promotion nights for less than $400 or less during a very lean time of minimal air travellers and low occupancy rates in the aftermath of 9/11. I believe that like all other hotels it is now up at about 90% occupancy annually and you are unlikely to get a standard room for less than $1,500. They cannot build hotels fast enough to cope with demand........and they do build em fast. It has its own underwater restaurant.

The Hydropolis is a completely separate underwater hotel project. I'm not very familiar with it but know it's nowhere near completion.

The Burj Tower is another completely separate project and is a giant skyscraper which when completed will be the tallest in the world (until Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Abu Dhabi all build their planned equivalents within the next few years as all of them will be taller still) but it has nothing to do with underwater projects. It should be completed by sometime in late 2009.

The Ad F1 track will now at one point in the circuit pass straight through the lobby of one of the 6/7 star trackside hotels, with glass panels on both sides and above where hotel guests can watch....berserk if you ask me. Don't think the German building contractor is too keen on that either as it wasn't even in the original plans.

I haven't seen Ebdon practice, I prefer to use sleeping tablets for my insomnia:p Many snooker coaches have also passed through the system here over the years including Doug Mountjoy. The UAE Snooker Pros are competent but no world beaters yet. None of their snooker pros have much interest in competition pool. When last I heard the guy who used to train Lynette Horsburgh and others in UK, "P J Bubble" was national snooker coach in Qatar further up the gulf.

Sorry if this question/answer session is boring others but suppose it can fill in the gap in the match scheduling for today. Anybody else with questions please feel free, I'll answer in between report writing as have to earn a crust:)

Sorry to hijack the thread and distract you from the pool. You did guess right though I was referring to the Hydropolis and the Burj Tower.

That is crazy about the F1 track through the hotel! I need to think of a new excuse when my web specs change, my usual "you wouldn't move a room on a house once the foundations have been laid" excuse is looking a little flaky lol

For those intersted in the topic of the thread, there is a very good Runout Radio broadcast on the Main Page of AzBilliards website by Jerry Forsyth and Mike Howerton who are on site at this event. This is the fourth in a series of broadcasts, providing some updates and a little smut about the event.

There are some video clips of various players from afar. Interestingly to me at least, the stands look about as empty as they do here in America. Maybe this will change on the Finals Day, and the place will be packed.

Mike and Jerry were both looking forward to a gala tonight in which they will be feasting on delicacies and enjoying the amenties offered by the hosts of this event.

They said Corey Deuel was en route to Arizona, after getting knocked out, to attend the upcoming UPA event. I wonder if Ronnie Wiseman is with him and going as well.

The lone American competitor will be Shane Van Boening who is, of course, in the final 32, which begins tomorrow! :)

JAM

If it helps anyone anywhere else other than USA the local time for the top half matches is 1200 which is 0800 GMT and 0900 British Summer Time.

The bottom half matches start 1430 locally which is 1030 GMT and 1130 BST.

Right now it's 1230 locally.

Blinking dots rule! Go Brits! Go Brits Go!:p :)

.....and Fu......great player that lad, tough draw.

Last night's gala must have been some celebration. There is no RunOut Radio video clip today. I wanted to see what everybody ate at the food orgy! :p

Who is this Filipino Alan Cuartero who is kicking Wu's butt 4 to 1 right now?

JAM

"Middle East-based Filipino cue artist Alan Cuartero" -- found that on Google.

JAM

Marcus Chamat is hitting 'em strong. He's up 5 to 2, going to 8, against Gabriele Cimmino.

Wu is on the comeback trail at 3, with his opponent at 4.

Niels Feijen playing his countryman Huidji See, the player who knocked Ronnie Wiseman out of the event, is tied at 4 to 4.

JAM

F210 and GOP1 are noticeably absent this morning.

I am the lone red blinking-dot forum railbird, sweating this tournament. :o

JAM

Yikes, Wu tied the score, 4 to 4. Wu ain't doing down easy. He's putting up a fight against the Middle Eastern-based Filipino player.

Niels pulled up one, 5 to 4, against See.

Who is this Filipino Elvis playing against Ralf Souquet? I like his name, Elvis! :D They're tied 3 to 3. Ralf sometimes plays slowly. This may be a long match.

You're not alone JAM, I'm stressing here for my compatriote Dimitri ;)

Cool! :p

Tell us a little about Dimitri. Is he the redhead choir boy?

JAM

Ralf pulls ahead by a neck, 4 to 3.

Niels ahead by two horse lengths, 6 to 4, going to 8.
