Man charged for trading ivory

Wow it amazes me when people like to get on their high horses about a particular subject, but also fail to see some of the bigger pictures that are excepted practices as well. All I will say is if you own a cell phone or computer, you might want to turn those in as well because there is a natural mineral mined in Africa that ten of thousands of people, humans are being killed for that mineral. This is happening right now as we speak. I know this is a little off the stimulating ivory discussion, but it speaks to the point of if your going to take a stance like this on whats right and wrong then stand up for all that is right and wrong. Dont just get on your soap box and thump people on the head with the moral and legal argument about things that you happen to not be involved in, but yet turn blind eye and are benefitting from others sufferings to bring us our way of life. That would make us the worst of all, a hypocrite!! Just my humble opinion.

It's called Coltan.

this thread is so much fun

ivory used for inlays aside, is there a difference (opinion poll would be nice) when using "ivory replacement" materials for joints or ferrules? (hit wise of course) i've never had a juma ferrule or joint so i wouldn't know.

i know this thread wasn't intended to address a moral or legal stand on ivory use in cues but i need to throw in my two cents for fun:

personally i could care less where the ivory ferrules on the two cues i own come from, because i already know, they came from an elephant - preban, postban...whatever. the source is dead already. all i know is that i like the way my ivory ferrules hit. if i can find a substitute that performs just as well i'd gladly change, but does using it bother me.......no. why?

i didn't cry while eating my steak last night
or during my three egg breakfast from all those poor chickens forced to lay like crazy
or while fueling my truck
or while smoking too close to a public entrance
or while shopping at wal-mart
etc.

while it's very admirable that we have all these liberal left wingers constantly pointing fingers at the rest of us whom are apparently born out of a shallow gene pool. they should all realize that unless the world adopts some type of "Logan's Run" policy (reference to the movie of course) we're inevitably "going to eat ourselves out of house and home" anyways.

we're humans, as long as we want to live, and live longer, we will alway consume more and more. there is no end.

i'm just glad that two guys didn't run into the poolhall where i was playing yesterday, beat me up, and then cut the ferrules and inlays out of my cue.

Well this is just a mess... lets all just play pool with branches ^_^? No? Yea... worth a try lol

A thought experiment...

Why aren't Rock Hard Maple trees endangered?

that's why I like to use mastodon .... you can't kill them into extinction....
agree
I rarely use elephant....

I use fossilized walrus....
you know your not killing anything.
Agree

Hippos tusk......
because not to many people would want to smuggle that.....
for a small amount?
And I buy from a very respectable place..
Had not seen any of your cues with hippo. Recent transistion?
hogs..... they are here in the US we hunt them....
I keep the tusks......
And easy hunts.lol
Rhino...not to sure I would want to be part of it....
Good.
Stop using camel bone?
elephant? I try to avoid it....that's why I always make the customer buy it...I don't ... I will not buy Ivory...use them if given but I wont buy it...
once I get some customers to buy it some back off cause they don't want to spend that kind of cash up front.
What about the "Elephant Graveyard cue" you made and sent to Sacramento to try and sell. Interesting with the carved Elephants in the cave, but not my cup of tea. Especially not for $10k. The bug inlaid cue was interesting though.lol
My Favorite.....
Narwhale....the best, even on cues.... I have a few full pieces
I know where t came from....I know it was not bought....
I've got pictures from where it was harvested in 1929...
and I have them because I inherited them....
Had one. Was definitely unique, and hit hard, with a bit of flair by having a new alternative to the usual materials. You probably remember it. The best looking piece of Cocobolo ever with blue veneers, leather wrap Narwhal joint ring and ferrule.Great player, but too heavy. But I did like the history behind the tusks that you had and the rarity of the materials. Mostly it was thatcocobolo with blue veneers though!lol
Good luck buying them from anyone else.....unless you want to pay almost 10x the amount elephant ivory is being sold for.....

Disclaimer......this is my thoughts on ivory.
I dont care what anyone else thinks.
I do not like poaching. There should be year round open season on poachers globally IMO
I do not want anything illegal to be on my cues, knives, guns, swords, tables, my drawing and carving material, furniture i make, even my house I am currently planning to built here soon(when I am all well and good).
(Japanese style old house, you know with all the slidding doora and windows.....and like 80% wood.)
so I hope I dont catch $h!t for anything I wrote.

Funny that you would finally show up on AZ after I tried getting you to check info on cues on the site a couple of years ago. I had an AZer from Mississippi asking me about you and your cues at Nationals in May, and another recently from Meridian while I was working in Houston . I thought you were still in the Phillipines again getting materials.
Somewhere I'm sure I still have pics of a bunch of your cues,I'll have to dig around and look...
Been a long time...

Reminds me of an article that Thomas Wayne wrote about the minimum amount of tools needed to build a cue. And he told a story of a guy that whittled a treebranch all winter and brought it in to have him put a tip on it,before taking it to play.......and apparently it wasn't too bad of a cue! Add a genuine Armadillo tusk Ivory ferrule to it,and LoneStar beer sticker to it,and we got a winner!
Where's my old Barlow at.....?lol

I don't see why cues need ivory anyway, they are just as good without it and wouldn't effect anything. I know it looks nice but under the clearcoat other materials look just as good.
Removing the demand is the first step. What purpose does ivory serve in anything anyway?

Ivory or no ivory?

So much talk about Ivory poaching, endangered species and all that shit. It's depressing! I agree though, if it is against the law we shouldn't deal with it. What difference is Ivory or Ivorine going to make for your skills? It dosen't improve the playability of the cue. It's all a bunch of B.S.. Give me a well built sneaky pete at an affordable price and I'm happy!

Lets get back to pool and billiards people!:)

You don't think that ivory used as a joint or ferrule material contributes to the playing and feel characteristics of a cue? I think it most definitely does.

If ivory is illegal then people shouldn't deal in it but two things occur to me.

The tips for pool cues are made from the hides of dead cows, water buffalo, elk etc. I don't hear anybody howling about that.

A young kid was recently murdered in my town who was related to a Missouri football player and in town to watch a Missouri football game. All 6 of the thugs who participated in the murder had criminal records, one guy had a conviction for drug trafficing and weapons in 2008 and was back on the street. Given a choice of who to lock up I would rather see the violent sociopaths locked up than they guy making pool cues from ivory.

I didn't have a good connection to the internet then. just recently....
how have you been?

Pre-ban ivory is not illegal, and according to others plentiful.

As for our justice system, many states pass the 3 strikes law. Along with upgrading misdemeanors to felonies, makes no distinction between a violent\non-violent felony. This takes away the judicial discretion of judges, to judge the crime and dispense justice.
