Mark Wilson - Pool in College - This What The Sport Needs

They support the industry of pool so basically they are there for table, cloth, balls and other equipment manufacturers. Not so sure they promote the game in any way.

The irony is if people quit playing the game, nobody will buy their table, cloth, and balls. :grin-square:

They play other college teams as well.

You guys know what other colleges have billiard programs ? I"ve been working with a local community college to get something going as well... not scholarships, but to offer classes in billiards... just like they do for softball, tennis, volleyball, etc.....

I will use this info to show the direction of the sport and the commitment of other colleges in regards to billiard interest.......

I whole heartedly agree that Mark Wilson is the best person for this endeavor.

And I applaud everyone who helped make it happen.

I wish the very best for this program and its future.

Over a year ago Mark called to let us know he'd been hired to coach a billiard team at Lindenwood and asked if Landon would visit and consider coming to the university. So Stan and Landon and I did just that. After a two-day visit, we all three were impressed with the campus, school employees, and the idea that Landon would receive a good education at a well-respected school. The campus has beautiful older buildings and new state-of-the-art facilities with ALL the amenities a student could ever want. A sense of a solid campus community is evident every where you look. In regards to Mark's being hired as coach, Stan's words to me were, "They couldn't have chosen a better person to head their billiards team. I hope they know how fortunate they are to have Mark because he will do things right." As a mother who's sending her youngest off to a college seven hours away, I do have some peace of mind knowing that Landon has a coach who will expect his team to have respectable behavior, play hard, enjoy themselves, and be dedicated to getting a good education.

Landon graduates this week and will be recognized for his scholarship to Lindenwood. Many of his friends will be receiving baseball, basketball, and golf scholarships. Stan and I and all our family are proud that Landon will be rewarded for the hard work and dedication he's put into his game--something that we didn't anticipate happening in the form of a scholarship. We feel very fortunate!

"National High School Championships" in Chicago.

I got this message from Mark and permission to post it here. I felt it needed its own thread. What Mark has accomplished and what he will accomplish is simply tremendous. (LU = Lindenwood University; the college that Mark is coaching and a great school here in St Charles, Missouri). The pool world needs more Mark Wilson's. Yes he has champions coming to his pool team but he simply wants good kids that want to learn how to play pool.

This is Mark's reply to me when I couldn't remember the player's name from California:

Brendan Crockett from L.A. and yes he is coming this fall along with Landon Shuffett and Briana Miller. They are all Junior National Champions multiple times and have represented the U.S. in the World's.

We have just completed our historic first year and really had some progress for the program. Also of interest to you and I we are set to do something good for the sport. L.U. is constructing us an on campus billiards arena which began April 1st. I walked through last Fri. and things are moving along well, drywall is up, heating/cooling units finished, plumbing, electric all in place. The room is 24' x 60' which is nice amount for four new 9' tables (Diamonds) and a small seating/video/lunch area.

We have five players along with myself being sent by the school to the Collegiate Billiards Nationals in Phoenix, Az. June 28-30. Air fare, entry fee, hotel, attire, and food. This is for certain great support to aid the program and recruiting. We are sponsored by Adidas and will wear their apparel in competition. Things are heading the right way and we are getting some momentum for the sport.

The University is well pleased with the quality of the kids in terms of character and academics, which was of much concern to begin last August. They indicated that they would like a first rate program and will support it as such, but must see growth in terms of the numbers of athletes in the program. Due to the expenses of a first rate program we will be greatly assisted by obtaining another ten team members.

Steve, if you find a kid with college qualifications and interest in billiards, irrespective of their pool skills offer them a scholarship. I will train them to be proficient at pool playing but they must already possess character. Integrity, work ethic, accountability, respect, are all basic components and they are not "given" a scholarship but rather earn it by contributing to the team with the above listed values. Just get me a good kid that wants a great education, a much better pool game, and a willingness to work hard.

We do have a lot of fun and I also insist on that as well. mw

This is great! When I was in High School they had the "National High School Championships" in Chicago.....is there still a national high school champion these days?

Also, they have a pretty cool assistant coach that goes by the name of Williebetmore! Although last I checked he had a medical license and not a teaching license! But what the heck he deserves it after all the hardwork he's put in with Mark the last few years. Btw, I'm the one with a teaching degree/license...hmmm...wonder if they are hiring at Lindenwood!?

1on1,
Yes, it is true that I am the assistant coach (unskilled and unpaid:)). I am POSITIVE they would double my salary to engage your services:).

Mark is definitely building a varsity athletics-type program. To his credit, he is trying to build the sport the correct way. Too often you hear pro-caliber players say how well they will dress and behave when the sport becomes popular and lucrative. Mark understands that the behavior and sportsmanship comes FIRST if the sport is ever to become as popular as it deserves. I cannot conceive of a Lindenwood player that would not call a foul on himself, even if it was not noticeable to the opponent.

The Lindenwood players may not all be the caliber of Landon or Brendan or Sharik (an Indonesian kid who plays their speed); but they will ALL be expected/required to exhibit good sportsmanship and a positive attitude at ALL times. They are required to show respect for the game, respect for the equipment, and respect for the opponent.

With more such enthusiastic players, there is no telling how the game could grow. I am quite hopeful that this type of program will spread to more universities. It is good for the sport.

This is all pretty cool, thanks for sharing. Now, will this "team" be facing off against other universities or just competing in the College Billiard tourney ?

This year they faced off against University of Michigan (assistant coach Jeanette Lee accompanied the team for that match), University of Illinois, Indiana University, Purdue University, and various local league teams.

It would be fabulous if the large state universities would get on board with this type of varsity-athletic program. The funds to support such a program are not onerous, and the benefit/revenue for the university is substantial. However, no university will support a program that does not promote the highest standards of scholarship and sportsmanship.

They had pool in colleges back in the day, Nick Varner was the collegiate champion.

Thinking about it when i was in college from 85-88 there was something going on, but where i went to school in Ca those schools weren't involved-i didnt play good enuff anyways. There was something, i just cannot recall what it was.

Don...There are a few more schools...Illinois State, Virginia Tech and Texas A & M come to mind. That said, none of the schools mentioned have much more than a "billiards club" interest, and even fewer have any financial support available to the 'student teams' involved in the annual intercollegiate competition...certainly none on the level of Lindenwood's program!

I really like how Scott Lee, Stan Shuffett and others support Mark. This is pool working together not against itself.
