So I am looking into getting a custom cue built, and would like to stay in the area. It will be fairly basic, but looking for input for cuemakers close to Baltimore, Md area. I would like to be close to actually meet the cuemaker and sit down for a minute, just to get a better experience.

I know of Phillipi and Frey, and of course black boar (a little above my budget). So any feedback? suggestions?

Thanks

if you are looking for something with killer veneers then you might want to seriously consider Leon Sly. His cues look awesome, and the feedback on here from people who have one of his cues always seems to be really good.

I know it's not what you're asking but my cuemaker is in NM, which is not close at all. However, his cues truly hit better than anything Ive ever shot with, and I've owned some pretty serious sticks (Dale Kersenbrock, Southwest, Cognoscenti and Gus & Barry Szamboti).. His beat em all!!

Also, his prices are very modest especially if you're east of the Mississippi River because he doesn't have many cues that way and I know he wants to get his work to as many hands as possible... Also he never uses veneer, everything is wood with his cues.. So a veneer is actually another point inside of a point... I ordered a new one that will have 6high/low inside of 6high/low from a very rare piece of Bolivian Crosscut Rosewood, I can't wait till he's done!!

His name is Adam Franks (www.afcues.com)... Check him out, and NO I'm not selling him I am just excited of what he has created me and what he produces.

Is there an address anywhere for Sly? How is he contacted. I see people selling his stuff but I dont think there is a website

Mike Lambros is your man.

Second that, Lambros is the man, wouldn't think twice.

Greetings from Switzerland, David.

lambros is crazy expensive too, might as well go blackboar at that point (nothing against Mike, I just like Tony's stuff).

But the Leon Sly site is no longer available. Anyone have his contact?

I love all Maryland cuemakers

I have owned many Frey and Phillippi cues and would highly recommend either of these guys as I know them both. I have yet to get to Leon Sly's shop but have seen a few of his cues in person and they too are very nice.

I am like you and would love to own a Black Boar and or Lambros but with the detail I like in a cue these 2 makers no longer fall within my budget. I will say that they are also both very reputable cuemaker but just in a higher price line.

I'm playing with a plain but strikingly beautiful Lambros in the low four digits (four shafts…) – fail to see any significant price difference there. No need for "more", inlays won't make a cue play better - and I love understatement in a cue. Impossible to beat the hit of a Lambros. But sure, Tony does great work, no doubt about that.

Mike Capone is right up there with Scruggs and he lives in Poolesville Md. He made a custom cue for me that was forward balanced per my request - 20" balance point from the end. There are a lot of AZers who like Mike's Cues.

Lambros isn't anywhere near comparable in price to Black Boar. Especially if you go through Mike himself (cut the dealer out). Also, his cues are fast movers on the used market and hold their value pretty well. This is just my opinion, but go browse the for sale section and see how many people are trying to move a Lambros. I don't think there are any at this point in time. People don't sell them because they play damn well, and when they do they move quick. I'm not knocking the other makers mentioned just giving my opinion. They all make a pretty cue.
Not very many makers build a cue that hits and plays the same from one to the next but in my opinion Lambros does.

He's a regular poster here. Why not shoot him a pm? leon sly is his user name.

Cory Barnhart

Cory is in Morgantown W.V. about a 2 hour drive or so from Baltimore. Cory makes a great playing and looking cue. I highly recommend Cory.

If you plan on making it from Baltimore to Morgantown in 2 hours, make sure you have a radar detector because you will be averaging over 100 mph.:D

Bob Frey is your man. Reasonably priced. Can make ANYTHING you want. His cues play as good as ANY other cuemakers! I've known tons of great players (not collectors - players) who use his cues. Good luck.

Does anybody think he's choosing a cue using the wrong criteria?

I want to get a reasonably priced cue from a Baltimore area cuemaker, and was looking for general suggestions from people as to playability in comparison to price. How is this the wrong criteria?
