Jay H. here logging in on Fatboy's account.
Boy, will he be surprised when he wakes up and sees this. As you probably know, I'm staying at his house during the WSOP. I start play today at Noon, me and 4,000 other hopefuls. Can you imagine, a $1,500 tourney with 4,000 players! The purse will be nearly $6,000,000, with a first prize approaching ONE MILLION! How can I not like that?
But now, back to pool. Yesterday Fatboy starts asking me to play, and I keep stalling him. I'm trying to stay focused on poker. I finally tell him if he really wants to play, I'll do it. I tell him I'll meet him in the poolroom in 30 minutes. I go back to my room, clean up and head to the poolroom at his house. I have a nice Szamboti cue that he's loaned me but I try playing with a CueTec that is sitting in his cue rack. MISTAKE #1!
Pretty soon Fatboy saunters in and begins to warm up. He wants to play Eight Ball naturally. It's his best game, and maybe my worst, although I can play it okay on a bar table. He wants to play a Race To Seven, and I want to go only to Five. We compromise and go to Seven.
There is a small wager involved also.
I start out using the CueTec. What a clunker this cue is. How did Earl do it? I can barely draw the ball and I can't feel anything. At 3-3 I change cues back to the Szam. Now, I can at least play a shot or two. I get ahead 5-3 and then 6-4. Fats wins the next game and has a shot to tie the match at six, but dogs a ball. I escape literally, winning 7-5. It was more of a workout than I wanted.
I have to say this, the Fatman is playing better. For the first time, he really put some heat on me. I didn't have to win this set. He is finally beginning to show flashes of his old form, when he was scuffling around with Rude Dog (John Morton). If he ever gets his back situation handled, I may have to give up Eight Ball with him. Fatboy has a nice solid stroke, and makes balls easily now, even from distance. And he put me in a few good traps.
Good shooting Fatboy! Thanks for the gift!
