$35 is a nice dinner. Doesn't the owner/developers/administrators of AZB need to eat too?

Do you think they are starving?

Do you think that TPTB are missing car payments just so you can log on and listen to Patrick Johnson argue cue ball physics?

Smoke <-- 35 bones is a nice dinner???

Want us to get tough? Maybe if you don't pay the $35, you have to take a course in squirt, swerve, elastic collision, and back hand english, with a 10 page finals test, then learn about pattern play from Travis Trotter and Dr. Cue's Protege.

:grin: I was game until you mentioned Travis and DCP.

Members: 117,844

There are probably fewer threads and posts in comparison per capita than here, however every message board will always have a considerable percentage of "members" that have 0 or 1 post.

Anyways, this other site has a(n) (optional) membership service as well. There are different tiers (silver, gold, platinum), however everyone is entitled to drawings, free raffles, "specials of the month" from various site sponsors.

Every month a different site sponsor (read: companies in banners) posts up maybe one item to raffle off to anyone who is a paid member. This has been HUGE in supporting the sponsors from within the membership/forum as well as created a relationship between the site and the sponsors themselves.

Now - that is to say there needs to be some work done between the sponsors and the forum owners.... but the work from the owners and advertisers pays off very well. Forum gets a larger number of paid members, sponsors get a lot more loyalty and "limelight", and the members get chances to win cool stuff.

There are millions of message boards out there that NONE of them charge a membership. About the only true cost once a forum gets large enough is bandwidth and time. Hardware is too cheap nowadays, so that's a moot point.

The going rate for most internet sponsors just for a banner is $100/month per sponsor. This site can probably get away with charging a bit more - maybe, maybe not.

I won't pay for a membership here until there is an advantage to it. PM space isn't really enough, as you can always export anything important.

Just my $.02.

well worth it.

The information on this site has been priceless, well worth $35 a year. imo...

I have learned a great deal from this site and find it to be a highly valuable resource for the game of pool. The membership fee isn't a lot, IMHO. Same cost as 2 hours of table time plus a beer... Two tickets to a Saturday night movie plus some popcorn. I don't see why its such a huge dent to the wallet. If we spend thousands upon thousands on custom cues and cases, but can't dig into our pockets for some pocket change to support a great resource such as AZB then I really wonder whether there is a deeper reason rather than just frugality.

For what it is worth.. I have purchased the yearly membership.

It just makes me feel good.

I also like to Tip at barber shops and restaurants.

This site lost money for years and if you think maintaining a database of virtually every pool player who has cashed in a tournament is light work-you're incorrect. Mike hung in there all those losing years while working another job to keep this going. I appreciate it and i promise you no one is getting rich off this site yet.

Think this subject is a repete subject every six months or so.
Your right we should step it up to at least a Quarterly effort. ;)
To all those who feel club membership does not offer enough.
It is not about you getting more for yourself personally.
It is about maintaining what we have as a group and growing it.

It's a geek thing

When i was growing up phones had dials and exchanges had 2 letters.
If i figure out how to do the paypal thing i will join.
This site is worth it.'Course i'll probably end up playing on-line poker too.
Maybe i'll bust the Lion.

AZ is the greatest pool site in the world. Right now I'm at home but within a month I will be travaling around to different states and poolhalls and it's a great way for me to communicate to the places I'm going ahead of time.

Usually I have about 10 lessons lined up before I even stroll into town.

Plus the info on here is outstanding. You get it from everywhere.

Can't wait to be on the road again. Just buying a motor home and after a little shoulder surgery I'm gone.

Look out though you might just get addicted. What fun...........

Nope Mike is not starving or missing payments.
Despite maintaining AZ Billiards afloat for us. ;)
But he is definately doing it for the love of the game.
Certainly Not financial reward.
Please find the heart to donate in the same spirit.
OK, I can guarantee you that this site is not even bringing in enough money to support me and my family. There is a reason that I have other sites that I am paid to run in the billiards world, as well as clients outside of the billiards world.

I have received offers multiple times from interested parties both in and out of the billiards industry. I could not really entertain the idea of selling the site. The idea of someone outside of the pool world buying it and covering it with ads to squeeze every penny they can out of it would be horrible.

And the idea of someone else in the pool world running it doesn't sound much better to me.

Mike

I joined when it first became available but asked to have my membership be private. Since then I'd forgotten about it.

Thanks for reminding me. I just "re-up'd". This site is a great asset to pool and to my life: :groucho:

Think this subject is a repete subject every six months or so.

With about 12,400 posts it seems like you get a lot... A LOT.. of free fun and it doesn't matter how many times it's repeated, we... WE ... need to support this site.

No doubt... great site and I love it.. been here for years.

BUT

It is not worth 35 bucks a year.. it is free... if it was not free it would be worth money.

Simple concept.

It's not worth a dime a day?!!

It's not worth $.10 a DAY!! That is an incredible statement. You cheapskates just amaze me.

By the way... loving something or somebody doesn't mean how many warm cozy feelings you have because of something/somebody. Love means taking care of the loved one or object..... careing for it, providing for it's needs. Love is ACTION... not a warm feeling.

You don't love this site if you don't think it's worth $.10 a day. :groucho:

It would be worth more that a dime a day... if it wasnt FREE.

I am a businessman, I exchange value daily.. I trade good/services for monetary compensation.

This is free...I do not pay for free things. If it were to stop being free then I would consider paying for it.

If a charity drive is needed.. then I will donate.. I will not give away cash for donation under the guise a purchase.

Hey Ross,
Don't get me wrong with my question but let me ask you this... So are you saying that your 5,628 posts and 47 ITraders are not worth a Club Membership?
How much money did you save for not selling on Ebay? Also on Ebay you would not be able to do any trades.
Peace :)

Not near as much as you're making off of selling things from your signature, etc...

Keep in mind, about 4000 of those posts were from many years ago when AzB was in a better state. You can't compare yesteryear to what happens today.

Ebay is a poor comparison, I don't like to sell there, but thanks for trying..

I'm on another message board that I know a few people are on here as well. It's a regional car forum that has grown much bigger than anticipated (read: Az Billiards...). The site owner won't ask for money from members, however has had several people step up when necessary - I've been one of them.

I've probably bought/sold/traded tens of thousands of dollars worth of stuff, have been a member since 2000 and have probably 13,000 posts. Point is I'll definitely help when need be, but peer pressure isn't one way, nor is having a pretty banner by my avatar.
