This guy.

Hi Jam, i guess it was about 10 years or so, i walk in the pool room in dundalk it was on easter sunday, no ones in the pool room except Cigar Tom and Mike Davis and they are playing 9ball on the front table.

Tom has that look on his face like he is stealing something, after a couple of games go bye Tom comes over an ask me have i ever seen this guy before and i surely knew who Mike Davis was he just got done winning that Reno tournament and his face was on the front cover of billiard digest.

So i ask Tom how are you playing and how much, Tom says we are playing even and races to 7 for 50, so i did not knock the game at all (if they were gambling high i would of let Tom know who he was playing).

So after a few more sets, they are even and Mike ask to raise the bet to 100 a set which they did, After a few hours of playing they had quit with Mike winning a set or 2.

After Mike left the room, i grabbed the billiard digest mag and showed it to Tom and Tom says i knew i was playing Mike Davis, Tom had no idea who he was playing!

But thats how these great players grew up back then, they figure if they didnt know you ,then you couldnt beat them, and any way Tom always thought he could beat any player that walk through his doors, on his table.

Tom had the worst of it playing Davis on any table at that time, Cigar was in his 60s!

Nice shooting, Mike. Add another one to the list!

Looks like all that bonus ball practice paid off ;)

Headline should have read.

"Player comes out of retirement to snap off elite field."

Ha, ha! So true.

Sometimes when it feels like the pressure is off we are free to rise to the top. Congrats to Mr. Davis for clawing his way through a very tough field and besting a very hot Dennis Hatch in a long final set. Whatever he chooses now I wish him the very best. ;)

Zion Zvi also recently started working full time and only plays once a week now and ended up taking 5/6th in this event which is a pretty strong finish.

There are very few shortstops and up that wouldn't be just about as good if they had a part time job...no matter what they say about it. LAZY. Johnnyt

With Mikes silky like stroke, how could he lose? Goes to show you,a guy who
strokes as horrific as Mike does, can beat anybody in the game.

I can see Earl now at the drive thru window at burger king telling customers "just snapped off a tourney yesterday, you want fries with that?

Congratulations to Mike. Maybe what inspired him was the bleak job market. Looking for work is enough to inspire anyone to use the moment to get some cash in hand anyway you can. I hope he continues looking for a career with a stable income and continues to play pool on the side!!

Mike Davis

I just think it is awesome and was fun to watch. I love the unconventional stroke get the job done. Reminds me of watching Jim Furyk's golf swing. If I saw him on the range, I'd play him for as much as i had on me only to walk away broke. I like those stories and will look up more of Mike's videos online to watch.

Congrats to Mike Davis

....nice to see a nice guy take it down.....besting Mr. Hatch is no small feat...
