This weekend was the 8th Annual Larry Liscotti Memorial Tournament at Cue & Brew in Branford CT.

Local hotshot, Steve Mack, took it down beating Mike Dechaine in the final. Mike was on the one loss side courtesy of a great match played by Phil Davis early on Saturday, Phil winning that one 7-4. Mike dipped Steve once in the final but couldn't double him.

Yours truly, the kickin' chicken, bought Mr. Davis for a c-note in the calcutta and was feeling real good about it with Phil besting two powerhouses in a row, right out of the gate, those being Chucky Altamare & then Mr. Dechaine. the excitement was somewhat short lived, however, with Phil losing twice before the afternoon was over, one, a rematch with MD finding Phil on the wrong side of a 7-0 final score. An fyi, MD went for $250 in the calcutta.

It was a great time there, saw lots of friends, even got to meet Lance Liscotti, the son of the legend in whose honor this event was held. Lance looks like his dad.

Rail action was very enthusiastic.

Some small but spirited wagering on table #1 between Davis, Dechaine and myself on 5 rail kicks, razor cuts and power drawshots with whitey dead-frozen on the cushion.

A break contest with a Greg Kucharski (sp?) cue as top prize was also the source of much entertainment. I saw one of MD's cue balls smack the rack so hard the cue ball went straight up in the air high enough to flirt with the table light.

The forecast was calling for 4-5 inches of snow late Saturday night and Mike and his girl, "Sam", stayed at my house.

We had a great time hitting some balls, he was gracious enough to dissect the mechanics of his thunderous break for me, and he seemed especially keen on checking out the various cues I have.

Worth noting is that while he was looking over some sticks, Sam was getting real close to running the table *a few* times. Definitely not just a pretty face.

I had the chance to cover some ground with Mike on topics ranging from his start in pool, family, Mosconi Cup, his recent TAR match with Shane, and, of course, his allegedly being "the most loathed player in the history of pool."

I think it's safe to say that Jennifer's question to Mike about that was way over the top (if not, out of bounds). Most of us can quickly come up with the names of quite a few players who can give MD the rainbow in the "loathed" department.

Mike has achieved a level of excellence in pool that few others have, or will. Is he brash or cocky? I'd say hell yes, he is. And to my mind, it's not a bad thing.

Has he made some mistakes along the way, maybe spouted off some when he shouldn't have? You betcha! And he'd be the first to admit that he did.

MD wears his emotions on his shirt sleeve. Clearly. IMO, there's plenty of room in our sport for emotion and even brashness, as long as they run alongside respectfulness. :)

Okay, some specific topic quotes:

Regarding Mosconi Cup 2012:

"An experience like no other"

"The pressure there was unbelievable"

"My play was like a 3 out of 10"

"I felt like I let my team and my country down"

Please note that it appears Mike possesses some humility.

Regarding the SVB TAR Match:

"Shane broke like God, it was too tough to fade"

Mike thought he'd like that game better on a tighter-pocketed table.

Finishing up, I'd like to add that on a personal note, I think Mike is a fine young man and I can only imagine how I might have handled being back in my twenties, with even half the talent he has.

Mike really does care (a lot) for how he is perceived by people everywhere, even us here on az. It matters to him.

While talking about his start in pool, he lit up when speaking about the influence and guidance his dad provided. Being a dad with two grown boys, I liked that.

All in all, I'd say Mike is a work in progress with a very bright future ahead. He is a thinker, someone who is examining a number of ways that he can do well in our sport, while making pool better, at the same time.

Yes, Mike wears his emotions on his shirtsleeve, which is precisely where more sponsors should be interested in displaying their companies' names.

I like Mike!

best,
brian kc
p.s. md knew and was fine with my plan to post pics and my impressions here on az. ;)

I love this thread. Thanks for sharing the cool pool photos and providing a update of the tournament.

Great stuff! :clapping::clapping:

Sweet set up!

I met/played Mike one time and I couldn't say a bad thing about the guy. I think he's good for pool.

while its nice to try and show a nicer side of dechaine, its like people are trying to force him down our throats now, there have been plenty of great players his age that showed way more class and manners on their way up
and down.alot of us here in the northeast expect more along the lines of respect and demeanor from young guys regardless of how they play.while respect must be earned,in some circles it should be given and taken away when it becomes neccessary.while my opinion wont change because i am hard headed please understand that when jen asked the "loathed question"
i was thrilled and so were many others.when he learns tothink first and react second he may climb his way out of the place he is in now.

Nice post Brian.

Thanks for sharing your experience with MD! He's not a bad guy in my book either.

Great Photos

Nice post.
What type of camera did you use.

Many years ago we had a One Pocket Player called the "Chicken" in San Francisco.

I remember when Gonzo played the Chicken one night and had him stuck for 500 hundred.
After 8 hours and we were sharing a beer.
Gonzo in his heavy Mexican accent said, "You know Barney, It's not so easy plucking the feathers of a Chicken"............grin :)

Brian, great thread.

First to Mike, That young lady Sir is out of your league, but congrats to you both you look happy.

On Jenn's question-
I did think it was over the top and while I know Mike is not the most liked player I felt bad for him. Maybe she felt because she knows Mike it would be ok to ask it.
I don't think Mike understands how he comes off to other people.
I was there in Galveston when a few other players kind of pulled Mike to the side and tried to explain to him how they felt he needed to change his attitude. I could see in Mike's expressions he didn't get what they were telling him but I think he does now.
One comment they said to him for me made perfect sense.
"Listen you keep going to way you are and eventually nobody will want to deal with you. Not sponsors, fans, promoters, or other players. No matter how good you play it won't matter you will be done in pool."
Wether Mike remembers that conversation or not from what I see he understands what they meant now.
Mike is one of the young guns and he is part of the future of America pool.

Brian- One day I will make it down to your neck of the woods.

I'm not even going to say anything this time about the obsessive number of cue cases you own..............

Thanks for the thread. It's good to read about MD in a positive light for a change. He's young and because of that he's going to do some things that won't please everyone. Truth is.....you absolutely should never judge people you have never met.

Yeah, I thought that wassa new GF too.

Chicken, tnx for the pics, and I gotta say thassa nice GC-1.

Mike, (you don't know me,but I have seen you play). Don't worry about anyone/anything but YOUR game. Keep on Keepin' on ! You'll be fine

I met Mike in Vegas at his match vs SVB. I don't know how to give my comments the weight they deserve, so I'll just speak plainly and hope all of his detractors believe me. I am a very good judge of character. Mike is a really good human being. Probably only 1/20 people are what I would call "good human beings" in case you wonder what I mean by that. He's very smart, and he knows most people should be approached/ trusted only with caution. He has a short temper. He speaks his mind bravely. He is image conscious but not at the cost of his convictions. All those things together lead to how he behaves or reacts to certain people at times. In addition he's destined to succeed in business; I am sure of that much. He's good for the game of pool, which demands characters and controversy if it's going to compete in today's entertainment scene. Anyone who doesn't like this guy, just doesn't know him. Based on what I'd seen from him in pool I wasn't sure how I felt about him either. But after a few minutes talking to him I realized he's got a great heart.

Those pics don't do her justice, she is prettier in person, and does shoot really well, thanks to Mike's teachings. She was a C or D player not long ago, and is now a pretty good B.

I saw her play at the tournament where I heard from people Marc dionne robbed the tournament an made around $1800 for 2 days work from what I was told by a couple locals which one of them is a good friend of mine an confronted him about it!! She shoots very well but def ain't a b player yet she is def close to a high c player! But seeing how she shoots she will def b a b player in the near future

A really nice post, Brian....he should use it in his resumes.

I personally like Mike's competitive spirit....
..and I think he should run with the 'bad boy' image.
The game needs some Earl Stricklands and Alex Higgins'....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-IkF4_iGBY

Then he could do some charitable acts in private....
...and deny that he has a soft side.
Sponsors will beat a path to his door.

'course I could be wrong...I bet the 'Alex/Scott' match would last over 18.5 hours.
:o

You are very right in what you say.

I went down to the Mosconi a couple of months ago, as a European, and in my mind, one of the guys I wanted to fail was Mike. When Niels beat him 5-0 on day 1, I was very happy. This was mainly down the precieved "arrogance" that I thought he possesed.

However, I was lucky enough to hang out with the players after the final day of the Mosconi and Mike really impressed me. He was nothing like I thought he would be and alongside Johnny, he was the guy that showed the most class and was great to talk to. Really pleasant and humble.

It annoys me slightly that this kinda thing comes up and Mike himself must get annoyed because he is actually a decent guy.
