Morality vs. Respect

Opinion guys? I make everyone shoot evey winning shot no matter how easy it is I saw Allen hopkins do it and I believe its respectful to the game, especially if someone has money on you, make them shoot, calcutta or otherwise.
If your opponent banks his money ball and doesnt call it, he doesnt win period or if he shoots balls out of rotation. Your not there to help him win.

I disagree. In the final match of the World Golf Match Play championships, there is $2,000,000 riding on the outcome, but putts are still conceded. Good sportsmanship reflects positively on a sport and should not be frowned on.

On the other hand, I agree with you about playing balls out of order or not calling the spot ball. While I admire those who point these things out to their opponents, failing to do so does not represent inferior sportsmanship.

Whether there is a calcutta or not should make no difference. When you invest in a player, you invest in every single one of their decisions, including the one in which they decide whether or not to concede.

When I'm playing someone for fun and they get position on the 9, I'll conceed the shot no problem - but if I (haven't yet) play someone for money, they're shooting everything.

I think it has a lot to do with knowing your opponent. If someone has trouble cutting balls and they come up short with position, I'll make them shoot it. On the other hand, if someone slices and dices like a ginsu, it's just prolonging the match.

For me it depends on how much money and if I know the shooter, if its just a chip in then by all means they got me

I'll give them the last ball from time to time.
as long as someone brought it up I will also stop the gu;y from shooting the wrong ball, 1 time only. and I have called foul on myself for touching the cue.
fwiw, I only play small tournaments and don't really gamble. I don't know how I would react if there was any real $$ involved.

I will often give my opponent the game, if ... he has a 'gimme' shot on the 8-ball or 9-ball (depending upon the game played).

But, just to throw some fuel on the fire: I have seen guys give the game to their opponent when there are TWO balls on the table. e.g.; 8 and 9, when it is VERY EASY to get from the 8 to the 9 AND, they have just given their opponent 'ball in hand'.

I played a MUCH better player, even, for cheap a few weeks ago. He could have spotted me the 7 and breaks but it was cheap and I wanted the fight. So right off the bat, I could tell he wasn't playing well and was getting frustrated. I jumped out to a good lead but blew two racks in a row, making the 6 ball and scratching. I gave him both games.

My thinking was, he is a very good player who is not playing well. The more shots he takes, the better chance he has to finding his stroke. Both games paid off as the next game he scratched on the break. He never did find his stroke, paid me and wouldn't play again.

When I spar with friends, even if they give me the game, I want to shoot the shot. It's so much harder to make the 9 ball when they already gave you the game. Putting that kind of pressure on myself has helped me improve.

LOL!! I've seen Earl give up a lot more than the last two balls! Most of a rack. Depends, for me, who it is, what is at stake, tournament or heads up. And banking the last ball in 9 Ball makes no difference whatsoever. I don't play 8 ball. Straight Pool makes no difference, you don't have to call banks.
By the way, if it hasn't been mentioned already, giving games and then not giving them is a shark move. You need to be aware of it, it's not illegal.

I was taught to shoot every ball. Balls can slide on chalk dust (im talking hangers) The pocket could be really tight (4")... They could scratch. All sorts of things could happen.

Tournament and gambling i say shoot. League play and in a bar sure but if its a game with money on the line they have to shoot it.

Nobody wins a game, match or title unless/until they make all the shots.

Don't give or take any gimmies. Shoot everything and require the same.
You have to make the 9 ball to win a game of 9 ball.
You have to make the 8 to win a game of 8 ball.
I don't think it's respect to concede a shot. I think it's maybe sharking.
Why not give the last 3? They're easy if you can really play.
I just don't like it.. at all! I really think it's just wrong to play that way.

Agreed I like both players to shoot everything.

Nobody concedes a tough game ball just the easy ones unless as you pointed out they are trying some kind of "move".

If somebody concedes a rack or more than one ball early in a set what else is that other than an attempt to keep you from getting in stroke.

Mike Lebron conceded a full rack against Tony Annigonni in the book Playing off the Rail because he could see that Tony was in serious stroke. Well it turned out it did disrupt Tony's Eb and Flow and he ended up losing teh match. Im not saying that this one incident caused Tony to lose but it could have be a big factor with the outcome of the match.

In that tournament there was a rule of NO CONCEDED shots but Tony never called him on it.

i say shoot the money ball too, as far as calling..

i take the persons word, if they say they meant it, i usually believe them

When I'm gambling with a good player and see that the next 3 or even 4 shots sometimes are easy I will give em to him.I just don't want him to get in stroke on me running out an easy rack.
