Mosconi Idol Pick Is A Joke On The US

Remember when the American Idol voting got hijacked and people were voting for the worst singer every week just to screw up the competition?

What if that happened here?

What if, next year, everyone voted for Travis Trotter?
 
I really can not believe the members of this forum bashing Matchroom for putting the best 8 ranking down from points up to a vote. They were looking for exposure, for fan involvement - it really was a brilliant idea. There are people I know going to the event this year that are APA members because they heard about the event from one of their favorite pros campaigning on Facebook. What is so wrong with that?

Matchroom is putting on an event to promote pool. On top of that, each player receives 7500 dollars as an appearance fee when they show up, and EACH player receives 7500 on the winning team. They also pay airfare and hotel for each player. Why is everyone being so ugly to this company for doing what everyone has been b*tching they wished more companies would step up and do - support of professional players as professionals. Oh and by God if they can figure out how to turn a profit, we should criticize this as well?

This was a new idea that they tried out for this year. They wanted to start small, with one team, and see what happened. I know they are considering doing it for both teams next year. You all also have to remember that the Mosconi happens in December. They would like to do a round robin, or some sort of play off for the final spot after the vote. The problem is that they wait until after the US Open for the rankings and the points to be decided, then there is was 15 days for voting, and then trying to figure out how to get these two players together for a match and then where, and then that winning player has to plan in a very short amount of time to get to the event. Do this for the European side and logistically that can be a nightmare.

They are still trying to hash out what they would like to do for next year. Yes, when you have an internet vote, it is really hard to keep out European votes. Truth is, the choices were all very fine players. Who cares if a European voted for Stevie, Charlie, or whomever - they are all very talented and each would benefit the team in their own way.

You guys are just killing me with this thread. To sit there and nitpick and ***** about a company who promotes and more importantly pays what the players are due makes me sick.

Do you work for Matchroom? You seem to know a lot about the inner workings of it. I agree that Matcroom has done a lot of good things for pool and put money in players pockets. But in my opinion they have ruined the do it for your country part of the Mosconi Cup with this Internet vote. Johnnyt
 
I dont think its that bad. I mean they are all very well qualified. On any given day any one of them can beat each other. Regardless of who gets the vote I think U.S.A. is going to get spanked.
 
I'm thinking that if they did a public vote for the European team, it would be a 0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0 tie.
And no, I'm not just some American poking fun at the Europeans, as I'm not American (British actually, so not a real European either)

I do not work for Matchroom. I have been a long standing member of this forum, and was a lurker long before I signed in for an account.

You do not need to know the inner workings of Matchroom if you talk to any of the players involved in years past to know what kind of treatment they have received from Matchroom.

How else would you have recommended they do the vote? People send in postcards? I'm sure they would be open to suggestion, no problem. The part I have a problem with is people on this forum bashing a company that has a good reputation amongst our professional pool players. If you have a suggestion to make what they tried to do better, then post it! But to go on here with a negative attitude because they are trying something new is beyond me. And how bad is it really? As I stated before they did what they were after, drummed up interest in this event - for the good of all involved - the players, fans, sponsors. I can't remember knowing when the event was going on in the past, and I've been active in the pool community as a player for 17 years!

The purpose of my post is for all of us to step back for a minute and realize what's going on here. This company is doing it's level best to do what a lot of others do not which is give our professional players an outlet to make a little money and showcase their talents on an international stage.

Yeah you're probably right that I went over the top a bit with the opening post here. I guess patriotic emotions got the best of me. I was looking at it more like a war than a tournament. Johnnyt

Without Matchroom's initiative pool would have withered and died as a TV Sport many years ago. The World Pool Masters, World Pool League, The World Cup and particularly The Mosconi Cup were all Matchroom creations.

This event has been drawing monster viewing figures for almost two decades now and Luke Riches has been it's publicist since the start.

One would have to respect his opinion more than the Half Empty Glass Brigade. The fact that the Player Poll has kept the subject on these pages every day for the past months vindicates Luke's decision to hold the ballot.
Further more, you don't hear the players complaining - their glass is overflowing.

I have no idea why one team is fully selected and the other has one person voted in.

If they feel the need to vote, vote for captains. Let these captains pick the teams.

I know I might be in the minority here, but I have to say, I agree with Tina. When we first heard that the fifth member of the US team will be voted by the public and that we would have a chance to vote this person in, most of the people in the poolroom were nothing but excited at the opportunity. Wow that was a long sentence. But seriously, it was something new, it was exciting. Was it perfect? No. But whatever MR does next year may be better. In my opinion, maybe someone can direct the MR people to this thread to feed them with the +'s and -'s of this year's voting process but more importantly, new ideas that they can try next year. On second thought, maybe excerpts from this thread can be used. The only thing that I don't like is how it seems the voting has been extended, and the lack of an announcement some 30 hours after the cutoff. Nevertheless, I have voted, and I am going to watch the Mosconi Cup and root for Team USA, and I'm going to have a lot of fun while I'm there.

I've got to agree with "Girlwon1" here...
Maybe they could have found a better way to make the decision...maybe not...either way, I imagine they're doing the best they can and are trying to pull in fan participation. They're doing a lot more for pool than most people are and in an exciting format that makes it for something more than just a payday.

To be honest, it sounds like a lot of "sour grapes" on here with people mostly because whoever they were wanting to win the vote isn't...

I mean really...out of all of these guys, in a race to 5 nine-ball, who do you really like that much over any of the rest of them? They're all more than capable of playing great, and in this case, it will probably come down to who can deal with the team and patriotic pressure the best.

So I say, cut them some slack...because I don't care how they decide who gets to play, somebody is going to be b!tch!ng about it...
 
They are throwing out votes submitted by ACORN of dead people and illegal aliens...:wink:

This poll favors the computer literate with E-Mail addies though....old timers without computer access are/were eliminated.:(

my 2 cents

While a lot of people seem to be unhappy with the voting and the selection process for the final US player let's all keep one thing in mind.

If you aren't open to trying anything new you are condoning the current state of things. With the state of pool in the world and especially in the US I think we should all be ready to try new things. Who knows what will make pool explode? I only know we haven't found it yet.
