My Friend Chad "Big Nasty" Pollman

Nasty and I talked all the time on the phone. I felt that he looked after me and I helped him as much as I could in return. I will miss the calls and knowing there was always someone I could talk to.

If you can see this nasty
I will always remember you

Mike I have been thinking about what to do for days. I posted an idea on my FB page and I am going to do it:

"I've been a daze for a few days but I have been thinking of something to do in memory of Chad. Two things he always wanted to do and I always said was to hard to put together...one was a partners game and the other was a ring game. Chad always loved the interaction in those formats but I always said "More players is more expense and work without more money."

I keep thinking about it and one thing keeps popping in my head: "The Pollman Trophy" Johnny Archer mentioned wanting to play a partners game with Shane against Darren and another European player. I think Chad would of loved something like that. Do it once a year with an American Team vs World Team. Winner gets the Pollman Trophy for that year. We PPV the event and give the profits to Chad's daughter.

I want to do something to honor Chad and what he brought to people who loved the game as much as he did. A good way to do that is a match he would want to see and would get people excited. What do you think about the idea ?"

I talked to Watchez about it and he liked it, posted the above on Facebook and got a great response. It was a mistake to not try something like a partners game when Chad was here. I'm going to fix that now and put Chad's name on it because it was something he would of really loved to see. I know I'll have a lot of help doing it too. When some things are firmed up I'll be in touch. Thank you.

I think the partners format is an awesome idea! Will it be Scotch Doubles?

My Wife and I got to talk with Chad for a while at one of the Derby's. He struck up a conversation whith us about what we had seen so far, and what we had liked most. Between swaping stories with us he would pursuade folks to not smoke in the action room. He was a real nice guy! Our prayers go out to his family and friends. Thanks to Shane, Justin, and anyone else that has shared stories about Chad. RIP.

sad to hear this

Have not been on the forums as much these days ,just read this .Jcin ,sorry to hear about Nasty .When a real friend like that passes on too soon no one can know what you are feeling but you .Many prayers for you and his family.

Great post, Justin. Chad's contirbutions to pool will not be forgotten. I am deeply sorry for your loss.

Justin,

You two had a lot in common, like brothers. I know it would kill me to lose a friend like that. You did him proud with the nice words. Sounds like he really had lived a full life too.

Best wishes,

Chris

I only knew "Big Nasty" slightly we spoke a couple of times at the Derby and I am glad to have made his acquaintance even in that small way. He liked making it happen and pool is better to have had him around. I always knew he was in SVB's corner he was proud of the South Dakota kid. Chad was in the trenches and worked to make TAR happen. I think he left a great legacy and pool was better for him being involved these last few years. I know JCIN and Chad had some adventures and they shared some of that with the world. RIP Chad, thanks for all you did. Thanks JCIN for sharing I know your world is rocked with his passing, my condolences.

Wow I met Nasty in 07 also.

My first meeting with Nasty was in the AZ/1P room in 07. I was hitting some balls with I think his AZ name was Pugh. Nasty came in and sat down in the room and started talking to Pugh. After a about 10 minutes Nasty asked Pugh to ask me to gamble and for whatever reason he didn't seem to interested. I walked over to Nasty and introduced myself and started talking with him. He was very easy to talk with and I explained to him I heard him ask about gambling and I told him I had been drinking for hours and didn't really want to gamble. He said ok no problem I just want my buddy to get into some action.

After that everytime I saw him he said hello and asked how I was doing. What was a big deal to me about that was I really fealt he meant every word and when he asked how I was doing he was really interested and not just asking to be nice.

My last little story about Nasty was during the Hatch vs Appleton match in Vegas.
I won't go into all the details but short story is a drugged out cabby thought I screwed him on a cab ride the night before. Well this cabby came in to the poolroom he said looking for me and demanded I re pay him for the ride the night before. When I refused because I know I paid him he told me he was calling his boys to come down and break my legs. Well I was in Vegas at that time by myself so I figured I needed someone to atleast know what was going on and maybe have my back. The logical choice to me was Nasty because he was huge.
So I went up to explain things to Nasty and to my surprise Ronnie Wiseman was there explaining to Nasty what he overheard. Nasty looked at me and "said you got a problem Bora"? I explained my side to him and he said "don't worry I got your back". Well as it turned out Ronnie also told the room owner and he kicked the guy out so it never was a problem. But I truely believe if it became a problem Nasty would have been there if I needed it.

For that reason I feel I have alsways owed him something and did whatever I could to support TAR.

Nasty I only saw you in person 6 times or so and talked to you maybe 10 times but you touched my life.

I was looking through some old pictures and found one that comes with a pretty funny story.

The above photo was taken at the 2008 US Bar Table Championships in Reno. Nasty is in the booth with Ken Shuman and behind them are Adam "The Sleeve" Behnke and Shane. At the time Shane and The Sleeve were on the road together. Nasty loved both of these guys and especially loved busting one or both's balls when the opportunity arose.

As luck would have it Shane and The Sleeve drew each other in one of the tournaments. Soon as Nasty heard he started on both of them seperately:

To Shane: "You better not sleep this one kid. The Sleeve is coming for you. Look pretty bad for you to get beat by your younger road partner. You better come out firing."

To The Sleeve: "You should do something to show this kid you aint afraid of him. You can can beat this kid." Naturally this was said while Shane was standing right next to The Sleeve.

This went on in one form or another for awhile. Long enough to where it had become pretty funny to everyone involved except maybe Shane and The Sleeve I think....LOL. So just before the match and I dont remember who's idea it was it could of been Nasty's hell it could of been mine...whoever it was it was genius...came up with the idea for The Sleeve to have this little note waiting for Shane on his chair just before the match started:

renochair.jpg

My brain is scrambled eggs right now so I dont remember who won that match. I know The Sleeve beat Shane at some point in the event that year. I'm sure Shane or The Sleeve remember how it came out. Thats how Nasty was though with people he liked. He would take a bullet for you but don't ever think he would give up the right to mess with you a little in the name of having a good time.

One other little thing that comes to mind is that Chad LOVED the Reno event. He used to say "$30 hotel rooms, all you can eat steak buffet and a poker game full of pool players....its like heaven." My man loved that steak buffet at The Sands. He said to me one of the first days we where there "Man I had that steak buffet last night. Its AMAZING! You finish your steak and just ask for another one and they bring it. I had like four last night. This place is great!"

So naturally I go check it out later. I really have no way to adequately describe how terrible the food at the Sands all you can eat steak buffet is. No exaggeration its the worst I have ever eaten. I'm pretty sure the meat was either dried mountain goat or maybe dehydrated Nutria rat. Horrible steaks. But they would bring you as many of them as you wanted. So I tell Nasty "Man that is the worst buffet I have ever eaten." he replies "Really?...Huh...I like it. All you can eat steak dude...all you can eat steak."

For my man Nasty quantity had a quality all its own.

One random thing that sticks out in my mind is Nasty wouldn't eat chicken wings on bet. Hated them and wouldnt have anything to do with them. Ever. I never found out what the exact story was behind it but I always got a chuckle out of it when I would order some and he would look at me like I was eating a plate full of roadkill. It's funny the things you remember.

I met Chad about 3 or 4 years ago and he was at the door of one of the TAR rooms at the Riviera and I introduced myself to him and recognized my AZB name instantly. We spoke for a good 15/20 minutes about TAR and the game that was being recorded, can't recall the game, sorry.

Justin, I don't won't you to feel that I am taking advantage of the situation for free advertising but this is what I can offer...

Tell me a wood combo that Chad would have liked and I will donate a pj cue with 2 shafts, as long as the proceeds go to Chad's daughter. I am taped out with orders this year but I will make it happen for this cause.
My cell number is on my signature. I should be going to Tunica and if you want we can go through the details there.
