My tribute to Justin and TAR

So I sat back in my easy chair, cranked my computer up to full screen and watched two champions play LIVE POOL! What a pleasure it was to be able to see a final match live and not tape delayed by weeks or months. In this country LIVE championship pool has almost been non existent. Only SkySports, Star Asia and some of the regional Asian networks have been offering live pool to their audiences. In the USA we miss out on all this.....UNTIL NOW! Thanks to Justin Collet and his team from TAR.

This is what I've always wanted for pool in America, my main beef with the networks here. Who really cares about watching a match when we already know the result. It's like watching Tiger win the U.S. Open a month later. Wonder how those ratings would be? But now, thanks mainly to TAR, Accu-Stats, Pool Action TV and a few others, we finally have an opportunity to see it the way all sports should be viewed, as it happens!

And what a great job the TAR crew has done. Justin, Andrew, Nathan and all their crew are creative and talented young men, who are breathing new life into our sport. Kudos also to the very personable Samm Diep Vidal, who does the pre-game intros. The camera loves her and so do we! The TAR shows are TELEVISION at it's best. Good camera work, excellent direction and most of all, entertaining commentary. These guys are the new face of pool, and maybe our saviors. They have fresh new ideas about how to showcase the game without trying to make up some fancy new gimmick. Get behind these guys, because they are the ones who can make a difference in the future of our sport. I don't think they've scratched the surface yet on what they can create. Music, graphics, animation, all that and more is in their repertoire and who knows what these guys will dream up. For me, I'm excited at the prospect of seeing what they'll do next.

Now, let me talk a moment about the main man Justin. He's bigger than the average bear! In fact that's a good name for him, BEAR! Well our man Bear is the Cable Guy of commentary. If you haven't heard him in the booth you're really missing something. Bear is blue collar to the core, with nothing or no one off limits. He's so relaxed and comfortable in his own skin, it's like he's sitting on the couch next to you, just rapping away about anything that comes to mind. I like doing commentary myself, but if I had my choice I would kick back and listen to the Big Bear all day. Next time I'm in the booth with him, I'm gonna shut up and let him take charge. I know when I'm window dressing. :p

He kicks off the show with his anthems - Always bet on Shane! Don't bet against the Pinoys! He thanks Samm for her work by calling her "Little Ms. Spain." A reference to her hubby, Marc "Spain" Vidal. His dialogue is full of his own hip pool jargon - Talking about his man Shane, "He plays like a gangsta." Referring to the prize money, "Get that meat!" Talking about a supposed warped cue, "He grabs his fishing lure cue." Good cue ball control - "He's working it." When Shane runs off a few quick racks, "The train is rollin'." Bear makes no excuses for his favoritism of Shane. He is totally unapologetic and could care less what you think. He calls the legion of Shane fans, "Shaniacs." But just when you think he's a comedian, he makes an astute observation to remind you that The Bear knows POOL! "Pool at it's highest level is all about pressure and creativity." There you have it in a nutshell, what separates the men from the boys, and Bear said it in one sentence. Talking about what constitutes a good safety, "It's all about separation and distance." Right on again!

But he's at his best when being spontaneous - Talking about Cleary's Ten Ball game, "You're a slop hammering junkie." Alex is no where to be found, "He's got tennis elbow from throwing dice." A sarcastic reference to systems like CTE, "He's playing center to ghost ball." Again to Cleary who is reacting to a missed shot, "Please pick up your liver." Any player with an awkward stroke, "He's got a stroke like a rusty door hinge." When a player misses a ball, "He hit it too fat. The story of my life." Shane is playing a wild shot, "Keep your hands and feet inside the ride." And nearing the end of the match, "My grandpa used to say it's time to call in the dogs and piss on the fire." Bear is also self deprecating, referring to himself and side kick Cleary as "The two fat guys."

What you're listening to is an American original. His greatest gift may be his off beat commentary, which is often overlooked by the quality of his shows. I don't know about you but I'm glad that we have this crew "working it" in the pool world. We might just have a chance to go somewhere with these guys creating the shows.

It really is wonderful what these guys are doing. They are pioneering a market, which is amazing to me. I really hope they reap as much success as they can handle. They are contributing something very special to the sport. I think that what Justin and crew do is just as important to pool as the players that play it. Afterall, they are bringing the audience that is necessary to have tournaments.

I want everyone who hasn't purchased one of their pay per views to know they are missing out on something wonderful. If you like pool at all, you really shouldn't miss them.

TAR hit a homerun!!

could'nt agree with you more Jay. I bought both streams of the 1 pocket and the US open 10 ball events and come away thinking what a deal I got. The new HD equipment was outstanding as I coud see the color of the balls with out the close ups, better then some of the telecasts that they use to show. The camera guys also deserve some kudos as they did a fantastic job also. Thanks to all who were involved and I hope Justin and Nathan continue to work together and make our sport grow into something special again. Thanks for a great week guys....Jeff

TAR is the best thing to happen to pool since Accu-Stats, and Accu-Stats was the best thing to happen to pool since the leather tip.

I watched much of the One Pocket and a few days of the 10 Ball.

The Production was excellent. I truly hope it was a BIG success for all involved. The commentary was great, the picture was very clear and the cameramen obviously know pool.

Thanks to all that were involved!!

GREAT coverage!!

I do my best to support these guys. They really do an amazing job as well as Bigtruck.

NICE, real nice.......... I agree with you and Jay.

This TAR production has been excellent.

There's plenty of praise to be shared and Justin does a great job of doing just that as well. It's nice to see so many people pulling in the same direction.

I still can't get over the job that the camera men did on this event.

We have a candidate for new post of the year

Great review .. The tar crew does step up to the plate when i comes too pool ....

Thank you to Jay and everyone else for the kind words. The US Open streams were a total team effort starting with Mark Griffin. Mark and I talked about what kind of product we wanted in the end and he let me pick my crew and do it how we thought best. This production was not cheap. Mark believed in all of us and put his money where his mouth is. Anyone who enjoyed the show should thank him because without his backing and trust it couldn't have happened. He is willing to take chances in order to break new ground in pool. Its a lot of fun to work with a guy like that.

Nathan and Dave from RunOut Media were instrumental in the production as well. They added their gear to ours and more importantly their skills and hard work. Nathan was on the switcher for most of the show so he made the most important decisions in a live broadcast. That is what the show ends up actually looking like. He did a great job. Dave ran the RunOut/ TAR merchandise booth all day and came in to help with the show at night. Anything from taking a turn on the switcher to running a camera he was there and busting his ass.

We also had Vincent "Frenchy" Rochfort on the cams and he put in work. He was the first one there in the morning and the guy who put the gear away for the night. He also kept us in stitches. It was a pleasure to work with him again and I hope to many more times in the future. Rafael Dabreo was on the other cam for most of the event and did a damn god job as well. Raf is from NYC and a die hard pool guy. His enthusiasm and NYC sense of humor made for some hilarious moments that I will never forget. Raf is the heat.

Andrew "Big Tony" Cleary and I had been talking for months about things to do on the show. He had planned to be there for most of it but life threw him a curve and he had to miss most of it. Even though he wasnt there for most of the actual show he is the guy responsible for the new look of the TAR logo and the cool graphic elements of the stream. Its probably a good thing he couldnt make it till later. We might not have survived otherwise.

As I said in the beginning this was a total team effort. From the guys in the TAR crew to the guys like Jay, Billy, Jeremy Jones, Larry Schwartz and all the other players and people who donated their time to do commentary. Everything coming together made it a fun and interesting experience. At the heart of it all is that everyone involved really loves the game. I think that shows through in the final product.

None of it would be possible without the people who pay to watch and put up with all the hassles of streaming. So while its super cool to see all the kind words directed towards me I want to make sure people know this stuff is a team game. It is nice when a talented and motivated group of people come together. Good things can happen.

Really well said, Jay. I think we all agree about TAR, Justin & the whole team, but it was great for you to point out some examples that may get missed along the way. I particularly laughed when you said next time you were in the booth w/Justin you would be quite...everyone knows that won't happen (and we'll be glad for that too). :D

Again, thanks for the post.

Dave

He is fun to listen to. I would like to read Justin's bio - he's quite an interesting character and a really nice guy.

Superb production

I bot it, I watched it, I liked it a lot.

Jay spoke volumes about the leadership and tone and genuineness of Justin and his vision in bringing his crew and facilities together to bring us this monster gift to avid poolplayers/railbirds.

Justin is a big man-he almost has to be in order to hold all that heart, passion, and good humor. It is an even bigger man who wants to divert and deflect the 'atta-boys' to others. That is a leader and a man who has his values in the right order.

Thanks, Jay for saying so well, what most of us feel.

Thanks, Justin and crew.

Well done gentlemen.

Take care-get some sleep

ps: what's the deal on burning cop cars? I don't get it.

Cleary and I have a running joke that whenever we get together we are going to party so hard that we will do things like (in no particular order):

- Steal a boat

- Steal another boat so we can wreck the first boat

- Set a cop car on fire

- Wake up in Mexico in a ditch next to a dead goat

So far none of the above has happened but we have both shed some blood and brain cells in our exploits. One day we may make the news.

Or-get Tarantino involved -sounds like a movie script.

Open with the two of you in the ditch with the dead goat-and then build back to that...I'm thinking Tommie Lee Jones and Jeff Bridges or .....and of course a Tarantino 'walk on'.

Is it true that you and Cleary are not allowed in 3 states at the same time?

Take care

ps-anything you can share re a dvd release date of the recent 1P or 10ball?

TAR is a Great Value

Justin & TAR has the nuts getting my money. Just keep the live stream going and I will keep sending cash your way!

Nice write up Jay. Justin is a great guy and I love where TAR is going. The stream looked so good, it was a pleasure to help out a little while I was in town. I did some camera work and also took a stab at commentary for a few matches. Was a blast.

All of those things nearly happened last night. I'm glad it was my last night in Vegas cause I don't think my body could handle one more.

Had such a great time and it was good seeing a lot of my friends I only get to see a few times a year. Cant wait til next year!

You guys gotta get one of these:
