I'm going to begin at the beginning and go from there. Mr. Varney at the VERY MINIMUM, owes you an immediate complete refund. If he offered you that now it would still not convince me to order from him. I hope it's a small comfort to you that this thread put the icing on the cake for me and now I will just not consider his cues. I have experienced both sides of the equation from cue and case makers. On one hand, I put a hefty deposit ($250) down on an X-Breaker and lost it completely. Now I hear that Richard just owed a lot of people money and threw in the towel on the business. All I know is that he took my money and never answered my emails again. People still stick up for him.
The last three cues I've ordered have been late. Some cuemakers are good communicators and keep you posted. I appreciate that, and tend to be understanding. Some offer you something like an extra shaft, or a partial refund, or some fancy ringwork. I appreciate that as well. It's very hard to sue in another state. You have to always be there yourself in small claims court, and if you sue in another level of the justice system you have to hire an attorney and then on the day you fly or drive to the court for your case the opposing attorney just postpones the date due to a scheduling conflict. How do I know ? Been there, done that !
My big beef is these crooks taking all of our money in advance. I recently ordered a new case from a guy who does beautiful leather work. I wanted a particular style case to match a cue. I asked if he could make it in 6 weeks. He said yes and needed complete payment up front. I got the case 4 months late, along with the lamest excuses you can imagine. I never once had an unsolicited email or an apology. He apologised, when I called complaining, but it didn't help. Hey, at least he answered my calls.
In this particular case, seeing that other customers of Mr. Varney's have gotten their order after ordering later than you, I think that he should ship the cue along with a partial refund. His time and labor should be gratis. You pay for materials only, but that is what a stand up guy would do. It just doesn't sound like Kevin Varney is a stand up cuemaker.
I think we should stop paying for a cue in advance too. One of my favorite cuemakers requires this, and he IS a stand up guy. I suppose he has been burned in the past, and I'm in sympathy with him. He always finishes a cue very close to the promised date, so I'm not complaining there. But in general, how about half in advance ? 2/3 even ! 100% in advance and then 6 months late without communication is completely unforgivable. It's our own fault. We praise and protect these guys, and don't complain publicly often enough. Somethings gotta give...Tom
