New direction for the players

Thank you for saying that and I hope that Freddy reads your post. I was one of those kids who got excited about being in the presence of pool greats and Freddy "the Beard" ruined all my excitement of professional pool players, by being an asshole to a know nothing kid who admired him. Kids are the future of the game and I only respect people who are nice to kids.

Looks like you're a stranger to this forum.

Let me give you a little bit of friendly advice. You can disagree with opinions. Lord knows I sure do from time to time. :D

It is difficult to read ignorant comments from those who have never even attended a pro tournament, as an example, and want to spew their words of wisdom when they are truly in the dark as it pertains to the culture of professional pool.

Having said that, I do welcome you to the forum and look forward to more posts from you. However, please do not label anyone an "asshole." It is just not good forum etiquette. There's a way to curse somebody out if you disagree with them without using curse words.

Looking forward to seeing you post more often. Feel free to ask questions and contribute. Thanks for reading my post, and I hope you take it in the spirit that it was meant. :)

Hey scot don't worry about what anybody says to you on this forum. Unless they are a moderator. It doens't matter if you 10,000 posts or 1, state your opinion how you want, when you want, and as much as you want. And if there is a real problem, someone with actual authority will let you know about it. Till then ignore the mean police.

Runoutallover, I was not trying to be mean to him. I was only trying to convey that there is a better way to express yourself than labeling another member an "asshole." Since he is new, I thought it would be helpful to let him know that there may be a better way to express his dissent and/or opinions, and that is all.

Lol. I wasn't saying you were being mean to him. I was saying that you were being the mean police. As in, you know, a hall monitor, someone who roams around looking for people who arent being "nice". Thought that was obvious. Anyway, I was trying to convey, that just because you believe that there might be a better to express yourself, than the way he choose to, doesn't really matter. Because you came off authoritative, I felt like I needed to let him know that just like you didn't care for the way he expressed his opinion, he doesn't have to care about yours either. And that is all.

I never try to judge the person, it is hard when you don't know everything about someone, they may be a great dad, son, or husband, good people sometimes do not so smart things now and then, so I will criticize the actions not the person. Just my 2 cents

Many times forum members will express advice to newbies if they are heading in a bad direction. It is definitely against the forum rules to call somebody an "asshole."

I've had my eye on you for a while now, but have not responded to your posts directed at me or mine. Would you like to explain this thread that you initiated which, by the way, did not receive one single response? http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=81328

Youll have to get over not having my sense of humor. And...just one eye? Better use both of em.

If you received the autographs, then they were most likely signed by the trainer or locker room boy.

Not received, bad choice of words on my part. I got them signed right there on the spot by them.

I Don't Give Autographs While I'm Eating

I like my autographs signed where I can read them..... imo

Your wording isn't the most polite but I know exactly how you felt. I had the same thing happen. Someone whom I had heard great things about as a person for years, I spoke to him, he was anything but nice. Probably an isolated incident but since it was my only direct dealing with him, the rude guy is what I remember. The old saying about never getting a second chance to make a first impression holds true.

Friend of mine told me this a week ago. He as at the Derby and Jeanette Lee was sweating her husband, George Breedlove, playing someone a high dollar set of bank pool. George was losing at the time and this disabled kid comes up and asks Jeanette for an autograph. Jeanette told the kid wait here and left the game, went back to her room and came back down with a cue. Signed it and gave the cue to the kid. How strong is that?

Now that shows a lot of class.

Yeah I saw Jeanette in a room playing 3 cushion, and this old guy that mumbles, smells bad, had missing teeth, and doesn't make a lot sense went up to her and starting talking to her. She must have stayed there for like 15 mins listening to this dude, it was incredible.

First of all, all this harsh rhetoric accomplishes nothing. Freddy posted his plan, and as has been posted a few times already, the open market will speak volumes for its validity.

I have never understood all the personal attacks that accompany a new idea. There are problems in the sport we love. Fresh ideas should not be met by brutal attacks, but by reasonable discussion of its shortfalls and benefits. The last thing anyone wants here, is an environment where people are afraid to come up with new ideas, as those ideas may be met by vicious personal attacks. Your attacks today may scare off the idea that leads to the next pool explosion. Okay... enough preachiness.

As to this idea, it feels a bit like putting the cart in front of the horse. Back when pro-football was going through its early days, its players were incredibly accessible. Hell, you could have worked with one in your regular 9 to 5 job, as many of them had to work in the off season. As the sport grew, so did demand for their signatures and memorabilia.

For this to work, our players have to be at a level of celebrity that they are nowhere near now. For me, meeting Earl or Efren would be a mind blowing experience. Much more so then meeting Tom Brady. But I, as most of you are, are a small minority of pool fanatics. The vast majority of people do not know any pool players beyond the Black Widow. Once our players are house-hold names, this idea will have great merit.

The only way for this to work right now, would be to have them signing items that are not readily available to the public. I love the idea of having a framed tournament-specific plaque. If Freddy comes up with a design with the tournament’s name, logo, dates, and a photo slot, I think a lot of us would pay to have it signed. Especially, if all the big tourny’s used the same format for plaques each slightly individualized for that specific tournament. Then you are creating your own collectors items. Just a thought...

Do You Stiff Waitresses Too???

I'm with the players. Pool is a lousy career choice, incomewise. Being a champion in any other sport mandates multi-million dollar pay days. Tiddley wink champions probably make more than pool players.

The income proposition and the necessity of hustling kept me from going pro. At that time things were even worse, there were only a few tournaments with the same dozen or so double tough players winning almost every event.

If I had taken up golf, at my skill level, I'd have a few million in the bank by now. In pool, there is no income except for a few champions and gamblers.

Here's another thought about paying for autographs. Those who object, probably stiff waitresses, cab drivers and others who depend on tips.

Players will still sign autographs for free, providing a long line does not form. But selling autographed cue balls, etc provides some much needed cash and gives the fan a momento that could increase in value.

Lastly remember Jesus's admonition:

Luke 10:7
"the laborer deserves his wages"

Ideas of beating a worker's pay down go against the Bible.

Any sport who's players make multi-million dollar paychecks is popular enough to generate much more than that in revenue. Pool tournaments can't pay out big when there's no revenue made from them.

So, as pool fans, we owe the pro players something extra from our own pockets because the tournaments don't generate a big enough salary from them? That's interesting. I'm not making the "big bucks" in my career yet either... who should I go to demand respect and extra funds from?

That is just not a fair statement. People will pay whatever something is worth to them. The service provided by my waitress and cab driver is definitely worth the 15% (sometimes more!).

An idea was submitted on AZ. No one said that players shouldn't be allowed to do this... people have given their opinions on whether it will work, and there is no problem with thinking it won't.

Now this is an idea worth using. Very nice. I think part of the problem is Freddy didn't get specific enough. Maybe instead of just autographs, he should have had a very specific thing to pitch, that way Az's wouldn't have jumped all over him like they did. Not that they should have anyway. And RIB....know how I can sign up for the red hat society? They go to some good places for lunch.
