New Event

So I just came from a meeting with the Mayor of Carson. The purpose was to iron out the details of the event and each of our areas of responsibility. Bottom line - it's a done deal now and we will be holding this event. The final sixteen players are not confirmed yet, but eight of them will be filipino. The prize money has been jacked $10,000 to $60,000 with first round losers guaranteed $1,250. No one goes home empty!

I'm relieved that all went well with the city council and they approved our event. Now the hard work begins for me, getting all the ducks in a row. My responsibility is anything and everything to do with creating and conducting the tournament. They are providing the location and the financial support. If there is anyone out there who would like to assist me during this event (preferably living in the Los Angeles area) please get in touch with me. I could use two or three good assistants.

I can assure you, I'm not. They're going to invitationals because they want to control which pros can and cannot play. It's politics. And to be honest, it totally limits the prize funds but like I said, they get the players they want.

I understand what you're trying to say but it's a flawed theory and backwards thinking. Yes, I played last year in the US Open 10ball, and I suck, and it's a joke that I'm able to play in that event... but think of it this way, for every banger in the field, is another "bye" for the real players. For ever banger they have in the field, that's an extra $500 going into the professionals pockets. If there were 100 people my speed that played in that pro event (and they don't limit the field), that's $50,000 of DEAD MONEY going straight to a good players pockets. They should encourage as many players as they can get, of any skill.

I have to agree. Leave the politics out of pool, but on the other side, it is their right to run it anyway they think is right for them. I would sure think the goal would be to get as many players as possible though.

I'm sure not surprised that you have filled half the field with pinoy's! I guess there will be one American?

US Bar Table dates

Immediately after Jay's dates, the US Bar table will be held in Reno.

The dates are Feb. 16 to 22, 2015. (This is a week earlier than 2014)
Same great venue (rooms are $54 and $64)
Same $25,500 added money!

Maybe we can have a monster field!


Somewhere in there we have to schedule the Jay Swanson Memorial and the Chuck Markulis event. Should be a busy West Coat time!

you will learn its a better tournament without the whiners and trouble makers no matter how good the are. after missing out on a big one you will see how quickly they change for the better.

My sponsorship comes from the filipino community in Carson so maybe you will better understand why I must do it this way.
 
This tournament is a great deal for the players. The worst they can possibly do even after all expenses is to break even or make a few bucks since there are no entry fees and last place still gets $1,250. And there is a whole lot of potential upside, up to 20k worth. Sounds like the perfect format to tempt a retired player such as a Keith McCready out of retirement if one were so inclined. From the perspective of picking from the current crop of best players he certainly isn't the best fit, but on the other hand it would likely bring some additional excitement and garner some additional fan interest. And it's not like he can't still play a little too, especially with the time to prepare (and I think JAM said not too long ago they had been giving consideration to dipping their toes back in the pool tournament waters a little bit). Depends on exactly what you are shooting for as it is an invitational after all. Just a thought. In any case, great tournament and great format Jay, there really isn't any downside for the players or the fans here.
 
Did you consider playing 15-ball rotation, fillipino style? Personally, I think it would be great and very appropriate. In any case, all the best on a great event.

Mika has been spending a lot of time in Santa Monica. I've seen him at House of Billiards a lot over the last several months. Has he decided to relocate here?

Have you considered Rafael Martinez? He's still got a lot of big pool in him, I think. He's one the most fun to watch!

Here is our field for this event. First, our eight filipino players - Dennis, Lee Vann, Francisco, Efren, Warren, Carlo, Jose and Santos. Our four foreign players - Darren, Thorsten, Mika and Jayson. Our four American players - Shane, Oscar, Rob and John Morra. If we need an alternate(s), they will come from this group - John Schmidt, Brandon Shuff, Justin Bergman or Dennis Hatch.

My goal is to create two of these similar West Coast events each year.
