New Event

Great Jay!!! I know it will be a classy event.
You do know that Rodney is part Filipino???
See you there.

Salaamat po,

Keone

This event is made possible by the filipino community in Los Angeles and because of that, eight of the sixteen players will be filipino...

How about having one of those Filipino players be one of those up and coming champions from the Philippines who has never played in the U.S. before?

Any ideas on the name of the event and format?

"The 1st Annual Los Angeles Invitational".....

The LAI sounds good.

The West Coast Invitational, hopefully the first of many.

Interesting note, your event may coincide with next years Super Bowl.

It'll be great to plan a trip to Los Angeles for the event that week, finishing up on that Sunday in Vegas for the Super Bowl. O man what fun that will be.

Best of luck Jay, I'm looking forward to attending.

Great news Jay! I'm sure it will be a first class event.

Thanks for all the support. I'm getting inspired to do something different. You guys are giving me some good ideas. I like that I have eleven months to prepare. Right now, I can't say there is any player who has no chance of being invited, just that some have a lot better chance than others. Naturally if someone really lights it up this year, I will have to consider them. On the other hand, if someone gets involved in bad situations and controversies, that will work against them.

I'm still open as to the format, although it must be Single Elimination for several reasons which I won't go into now. I like either one long race, maybe Race-to-Twelve Ten Ball or even a Race to six or seven, two out of three sets. But I also have another idea, tell me what you think. How about Rotation, a combination of American and filipino style. I like either a Race to Five, two out of three sets, or a single Race to Nine.

I'm uncertain about what table to use right now, be it 9' or 10', but I guarantee you it will be set up to play tough but fair. Almost certainly this tournament will be televised by a filipino TV network, but we may also be able to do a live stream for the American audience.

I want this to be a good tournament in every way possible so I'm open to suggestions. I will also need a couple of capable assistants who must be well qualified. The pay may be non-existent or small this first time out, but the experience will be rewarding I'm sure. The one thing I can do is take care of room accommodations and food. If you think that you're the right person for this job (refereeing, table maintenance, assistant director etc.) please contact me via e-mail and tell me why. jayhelfert@yahoo.com

I also may need a couple of girls (?) to help me at the box office. I do have one gal in mind who has helped me before, but probably it will take two people to handle this job. Same thing here, mostly a voluntary position (small pay plus room/food) this first time but it could lead to better things in the future if it all works out.

That's about all I can think of for now. Thanks again for your support.

P.S. For the invited players there will be NO entry fee!

I have just made a deal to produce a sixteen man Invitational tournament in the Los Angeles area on Feb. 5-8, 2015. The prize fund will be $50,000 with $20,000 going to the winner! I am announcing it now in the hope that other promoters will respect these dates and not schedule a conflicting event. It is the week following Derby City.

Thank you, I will be providing more information later.

Let's light up FB with this information.

If it is single elimination with such a big purse I would make the races as long as possible,
of the options you mention 2 out of 3 sets race to 7 10-ball sound like the best way.

Races to 15.

10 games of 10Ball, 10 games of 8Ball, and 10 games of either 9Ball or Rotation.

So if the score is tied at 5-5, they switch to 8 ball. And if tied at 10-10, they finish the set out with 9 ball or rotation.

Even if a match is a blowout, it still ensures that the players play at least two different disciplines.

Dang Jay,

Don't think Fleming can handle a cross country trip with the equipment right after DCC anyway but it still has me wondering who is going to handle the video production... I am sure there are film crews aplenty in LA but don't know about cheap ones LOL..

Good to see you doing this and am all in favor of invitational format as it makes for a product that can be promoted... Nothing like having zero clue until the last minute as to who is REALLY gonna show up....

Chris

any ideas as to the venue of where it will be held?

The Carson City Community Center. It is a newer facility with 12,000 square feet of open meeting space with tall ceilings, a huge (free) parking lot and just off the 405 Freeway. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw what an ideal space they have to hold an event like this.

I love Pat and his crew and what they do, but in all likelihood this event will be broadcast by a regular television crew that shoots events locally. It's not really that hard to televise pool, although a good director is the key. I'm confident that we can handle this to everyone's satisfaction.

sounds great. not too far from me. only problem is that my wife might make me go to IKEA. I dread that place

Sounds awesome, Jay. Best of luck with this. Hell, I might need to vacation in SoCal next February and take this in, in person.
