In the last few years, people have started, building what use to be called sneakys, or sneeky petes and putting fancy rings on them, then fancy butt caps, then inlays, then wraps, Yes, i did have a customer ask for me to build him a sneeky with a wrap !!!!!!!!

In the future my two piece, 4 prong, no ring joint, no fancy butt cap, PLAIN CUE will be called


" House cue clone "

I know that calling a gussied up cue a sneaky pete is stupid but from a business standpoint, money talks. Try not to be offended. If someone wants a diamond encrusted ivory butt cue and calls it a sneaky, say yeah, smile, and get the front money. And don't go public mocking him after the sale.
 
gotta agree there. especially with the state of the economy these days, i'd think a business person would want all the $$ coming in they can get regardless of what the customer calls the product.
 
If a customer asked for a sneaky pete with a wrap, I would assume they want a 4 prong, two piece, full splice cue... with a wrap.

Those calling cues fancy sneaky's is just silly. I'm going to start calling my sneaky pete a base model Szamboti tribute.

this thread was a slight bit of humor, as what was at one time called a sneaky pete [ hustler ] has morphed into a fancy 4 prong cue. but still called sneakys.

the customer is NOT always right, but i do try to accommodate them as best i can

for 20 years i have been building cues as a hobby.

i own a jewelry store.
 
Everybody knows that a "sneaky" is a category, not a specific. Specifically, a sneaky is a bar cue cut in half with joint added so it can fool most folks into thinking you are using a bar cue. Categorically, a sneaky is pretty much any variation of a basic non-veneered full splice. It may or may not have joint & butt rings, wrap, butt sleeve, etc.

It makes no sense to go against the grain by relabeling things. The market dictated that cues in that category will be called "sneaky". It's understood by anybody who knows anything about cues. Even if you call it something different, your customer will consider it a sneaky, as will anybody who buys it secondary. It's more sensible to accept it for what it is and just go with it. Any non-veneered full splice blank I turn into a cue will be a sneaky, whether it is basic or loaded with decorative components. If it's a blank I didn't create myself, then it's a conversion, but still falls into the sneaky category. JMO
 
What's wrong with "True sneaky" and "Fancy sneaky"??

If you make it, I think you can call it whatever you want, as long as it's not a Banana.

True sneaky? lol wut

Fancy sneaky just sounds silly. Add some veneers and now you'll have all the dealers calling it a tribute cue.

It's just as silly when someone puts a white ring in the butt sleeve and it's now a "Hoppe Style" cue. It could have a mural of two dragons fighting over a cheeseburger, but if it has that white ring... it's definitely a hoppe style cue. :outtahere:
 
I wonder, in Romania, do they refer to them as Sneaky Petru's or Sneaky Petre's.

Maybe you can make a new line Chuck. Call them Gypsy Petes. Considering that Sneaky isn't all that Sneaky any longer.

That could be a new catchy name for them.

Always something to wonder about in my little World.

Dave M, thank you, thank you, thank you. See, I love sneaky petes, I have four. But the only one that looks really sneaky is my McDermott M11B.

Now instead of saying it's a Micky D. I can call it a base model Szamboti tribute. Maybe even leave off the tribute part. I never thought I'd have one.
 
I just call them full splice or conversion cues. Just depends on what I started with.
 
I consider #1 a sneaky. I don't consider #2, #3, or #4 sneaky petes. I have always thought that a sneaky pete should look like it could have been pulled off the wall of the bar or pool hall.

Am I on the same page as everyone else?

The reason why we do that is because if we have a "show us your sneakies" thread, there would only be one cue and a lot of copies.
 
Semantics. Every time somebody says "fancy sneaky", everybody knows it means a full splice non-veneer cue that has extra decorations. Take a full splice non-veneer blank or house cue and add a shaft, and you have a sneaky. Add rings and/or wrap, collars, inlays, etc. and you have a fancy sneaky. No matter what you do to fancy it up, it will never escape the "sneaky" category. We all know what the terms mean, regardless of whether we agree with it or not.

Yes you are.

I have never considered a house cue conversion (with an added joint/butt cap, etc.) a Sneaky. If that is a Sneaky Pete then we are to accept that this 26 1/2 is also a Sneaky? I don't think so.
