He's going strong in the Nick Varner Classic, love it! He's been my hero since I started following pool, actually since he missed that 9 straight in the side hill hill after coming back from a 9-2 deficit against Sigel and did nothing but scratch his head lol (he still won) He's the man. Playing Mika for a spot in the finals now; http://www.theactionreport.com/

Love to see the oldtimers do well. Nick plays all the games very well.
Short story about Nick. I don't remember the exact year, but it was the year or the year after he won the U.S Open 9 ball. He comes walking in Varsity Billiards in Tampa wearing a jacket that had U'S Open 9 Ball Champion on the back. I went over to him and told him it must be hard sneaking around in that jacket. He said, "I'll play anybody". He didn't get a game the few hours I was there. Johnnyt

Nick Varner for the Mosconi Cup Team!!!

After watching Nick play this weekend at the Nick Varner classic, I'm thinking maybe Mark should have put him on the Mosconi Cup team for this year. ;)

I'll never forget about 7 years ago I was in a local pool hall practicing. I would always get a table away from the bar by the front door so I could practice without being bothered by the bar flies. The door opens, and in walked a guy who just stood there watching me. I look up, and there's Nick Varner. It was just a dead night in central IL, and in walks Nick Varner. All I could do was smile, and say Mr. Varner. He comes up, shakes my hand, and wants to chat with the owner. I introduced him, and he setup some displays, and as the night got busier he sold cues, and played with the locals...great guy!

Nick played great in this tournament! Almost came back to beat Mika as well. He's also a hoot behind the microphone.

I know. He and John Schmidt both have great senses of humor. Corey Deuel can be pretty fun when he commentates too. Of course, Incardona and DiLiberto are the kings of humor in terms of commentating.

I met him once in my home town. Seems to be nicest person you could ever ask to meet.
He gets around from what I see. Pretty awesome!!

I watched the match against Chip. Chip played great.... but Nick won ! quiet competence that is how you can describe him. Imagine being a hall of famer then come out and win a tournie that is name for you! how cool would that be?

Love Nick Varner. He is the man that got me hooked on pool. Came to U of Miami for an exhibition and ran 100 and out against our school champ. Hung out after and gave me a few tips plus autographed his new book at the time. I showed it to him a few years ago and he laughed.

Ruben Batista

Who is Rueben Batista is more like it. Yea he was in the zone too just a few misses that set him back...truly a threat.

He had the event won after running a great rack at hill-hill for the championship, but he missed a straight-in on the 10. He would have gone undefeated but for that shot.

Mika played very well, but really got a gift to send the finals to a second match...

Mr. Lutz, I retired to bed after senor Bautista missed that straight-in 10-ball....so, did he or Mika win the second set?

Thanks in advance.

I watched Bautista play quite a bit and liked his demeanor Allot. His play is up there but not quite yet at Dechanines level. He looks/is? young and I would say he's slightly better at ball pocketing than Oscar Dominguez, tho Oscar has better board play. Archer earlier had em on the hill/hill game winnners side final 8???, but missed a rolling lag on the 5 ball three feet from the pocket to hand it to em. The next day Archer was fresh and one could easily see the difference as he dismantled Vadal at 3-1 when Vidal missed a simple bump and roll to the corner pocket and lost 8-3 as johnny rolled over on him with a near perfect game from a 4-1 up advantage. What did catch my eye in another match was....during play.....one of the players, while his opponent was seated as it was the other players break, started practicing a shot that he had missed. Never in all my years of match play at this level had I seen a player start practicing a missed shot, then rack the balls for their break, while the opponent sat and watched this player practice when the Match was not over yet!!!! Pretty arrogant if ya ask me, and basically its a "BCAPL tournament Foul. The rules were BCAPL rules of play. The event was ran well on both sides with the limited number of tables at hand on the amateur side that made matters a challenge. Good job Str8shots, and it was fun watching chip Compton have his hands full with the Kentucky Colonel, the board play of nicky was grueling and wearing for the youngster/s, but great to watch.
