No Archer for the Mosconi???

Just read the comments by the new captain CJ and noticed this interesting comment.

“This year however, is going to be different. The USA team will be young, ambitious and hungry for this victory."

This to me sounds like he might be looking for fresh blood in his three wildcard picks. If this is the case and an old timer like Johnny Archer does not get picked, that would be a disaster in my eyes. He is essential for the yanks. Just look at how he pulled his teammates through last year, especially big bubba.

For me it may be good because I'm a Euro ;)

Discuss.

P.s congrats CJ

I noticed also what you pointed out that CJ said, however I think he
was referring to the fact that Shane Van Boening and Mike Dechaine are leading as the two guaranteed picks by points. They are both young and hungry!
There is only one problem with your statement, that is that CJ has no hand in the three wild card picks. Also if you go to the Mosconi Cup website this is what they said:

'The remaining three players will be Matchroom Sport wildcard picks although the ranking will play a part in this."

So there you have it, not just anyone can be picked and neither captain,
CJ or the Euro captain gets to make any picks.

That is a good point actually. It seems a little strange the captains don't have a say in who they pick as the wildcards.

Staying on topic but taking a slightly different look on it. Matchroom also state the rankings will effect the wild card picks. Johnny is currently ranked way down in something like joint 16th so could still not qualify.

The day Johnny no longer gets picked for USA will be a bad day for the Mosconi

Thanks....fyi, I don't have any "say so" in the other 3 spots

Thanks....fyi, I don't have any "say so" in the other 3 spots. To me Johnny is still young and ambitious and yes, even hungry. I wrote those press release comments and you could consider those words as "figures of speech". . . when I left the game I was one of the younger ones, and now I get the chance to call every one else "young". Untll the US OPEN is over the other spots are NOT "in stone", so this there's a lot riding on this years Open for a lot of "young" players.

Thanks for taking the time to clear that up Captain.

It was probably a case of me over analysing. I understand there's a certain way of speaking when you have to make those kinda brief comments. I find it so strange you don't have a say in who you want on your team. For me, that is part of the captains job, making the right picks. But hey those are the rules.

Best of luck CJ and it's great to see you buzzing about on the forums and speaking to the fans after such a big announcement.

In reply to the comment made by someone else about "look at what he's done in the last 5 years" or something along those lines. I thought Johnny was an inspiration last year in the way he pulled Putnam through the doubles match on day 1 when Bubba was clearly struggling, and in fact he has been like that pretty much every year with the exception of 07 when he didn't play well.

the point was that the US has been on the losing end for the past 5 years, so if he wasnt on the team it would not mean an automatic loss for the US. I like Johnny and would love to see him on the team.

That is incorrect Europe won 07 and 08 then the US won 09 and then Europe took 10 and 11. Dating back to 1994 the US has won 11 and Europe 6 with 1 tie in 2006.

he's proved time and time again he's one of the VERY best when it really counts

I'm pretty sure the picks that Matchroom will make are the same ones I would make as well. There are a couple of players that are standing out, and now whoever can "come with it" at the US OPEN will earn a spot.

Johnny will need a good finish at the US OPEN and he's proved time and time again he's one of the VERY best when it really counts. This situation will really make Barry's US OPEN exciting to watch and participate in.

And when Mika cant make a Euro team all they do is win. I think if you take Euro players ranked 10 to 15 they could still beat the U.S

Because having him on the team the last 5 years has done wonders right?

In my opinion, Johnny has been a leader and inspires other team members to play their best. I hope to see him on the team again. What has me perplexed is that Rodney Morris is a great player but for some reason he consistantly bombs when playing in the Mosconi Cup. I have to give it to the Europeans, each player on their team is deadly. I'm rooting for the USA but I enjoy watching outstanding play. In the 2012 Cup match, Europe showed excellent skill and playing ablility. They deserved to win. Hopefully, this year's Team USA will play well. Good Luck USA.

We dam sure can't spare Archer. We DON'T have a replacement.
SVB,Archer,Dechaine,Earl and Hatch IMO is our best shot at them

Seems to me that SVB plays his best when JA is around. They're just on the same wavelength or something.

As usual I will be betting on Team Euro as I don't see USA winning. I am rooting hard for Shuff to get a shot at it though. I just fear that if he doesn't get a guaranteed spot he may be bypassed in the wild card picks which is gonna make me really mad.

USA needs Earl back even if that means no Archer. That's just keeping it real.

I think Archer sitting out wouldn't be that big of a deal tbh. I think if Hatch Dechaine SVB and Shuff (pulling for you bub) ;) are on the team thats good enough. Tons of fire power from all 4 of these guys. I love JA's game and he truly is a legend but if he doesnt make the cut then so be it. I wish all the players luck at the Open and who ever ends up where the end up it was meant to be that way

In my opinion the player's performance should decide at least 4 of the 5 players. Give the players a reason to play in tournaments. Public opinion should not matter when competing for country. Also, let the captain decide the 5th player. Pretty simple really...

First of all many congrats to CJ I hope he can bring the team together in London. He has a tough job ahead of him this year not because of the players but York Hall is loud, noisy and not a positive atmosphere for the USA Team. I think if they all work together they can do it.

Ok, I am just thinking here. I think these points are valid to any who know what they are talking about.
Johnny Archer will be picked for the Mosconi cup even if he does not qualify on points. The reasons I believe this is because he and Matchroom have a great relationship and have for many years they are not going to leave him off the team. Even if they did decide that he was no longer good enough to play on the team then they would for sure put him in the captains spot. Since CJ got the nod I have to believe that they plan on picking him as a wild card. Also He can still play as good as anyone out there. So those 3 factors tell us everything.

I noticed also what you pointed out that CJ said, however I think he

Who runs Matchroom Sport?

Where does the guaranteed money come from for making the team? Television?
